Excellent writing. Morris is feisty, inquisitive, adventurous--at 92. More power to her! I love the thought of her marching up and down in front of her cottage singing old hymns and marching songs. Her words on art are especially powerful and have stayed with me. She has health problems, she cares for her long-time partner who has dementia, she lives in a rural area, she still drives. Not easy! I'd love to be like this at her age! Her spirit inspires me. Grateful I came upon this book, which has had a far more positive impact on me than the Mary Pipher book I just finished (see that review).

The book arrived on Friday morning. I cleared the decks, brewed the tea, turned off the phone and settled in for a day of reading. A challenge—finish it today. But, before the pot of tea was emptied, just about page 33, I laid down the book and turned on the phone. This is not, for me, a sit-down-and-read book. Not like a meal from the drive-through that will be gobbled down before the news is off. Like a gourmet meal, this is a book to be savored, enjoyed, and slowly digested.Morris shares that as she enters her tenth decade she is writing her first journal—“good luck to me.” And, I add, “Good luck to me, too.” Thing change—her mood, the weather, her car. She puts down what on her mind today, briefly, and then she’s off. This how I plan to finish my reading. The book will live by my reading chair, ready for a frequent dip in. My own journal I lives nearby so may even write a response to Morris in my mind’s eye.At a decade and a few ahead of me, she offers insights that make me feel fine about my own approaching “tenth decade.” Morris’s writing is, as always, a delight. I keep my underlining pencil ready, because I figure when in a few months I finish the book, I suspect I’ll just turn it over and start again. Before I do, I’ll stop and send a sequel to this review.

What a delightful and insightful experience; reading this "thought diary" is like having a pleasant visit with an old friend. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Negroes With Guns is a much more complete story, which covers the broader context and finishes Williams' story through his exile to Mao's China, his return to the US and his ultimate death.I have been involved in most progressive movements since the Vietnam War, and had mentors from the early non-violent Civil Rights movement, but I was unaware of both the extent and the success of the armed black resistance movement that was contemporary with the better publicized SCLC/SNCC movement of MLK et al.Highly recommended.

He had just returned home to Monroe, North Carolina from serving in the United States Military only to fight a war on the homefront.I was assigned to read this book for my 20th Century American History class in college and it's a crucial part of a non-fiction account in explaining how life was in the South during the Jim Crow laws and segregration in the 1950s until the Civil Rights movement was in full force.The author writes from his point of view in a convincing and persuasive style in order to help defend his right and others to bear arms in the South and the NRA did support his right. In his home town of Monroe, North Carolina, African Americans were subjected to horrors of abuse and their perpetrators (almost always Caucasian) would get away from law enforcement.Williams writes that he doesn't support violence with violence. No, he argues that for African Americans in his community, the right to bear arms and defend themselves is necessary since law enforcement, government agencies, and even the Monroe Police Department failed to defend their citizens based on race.The stories here are true and horrifying about injustice to African Americans during this period. This book should be mandatory reading for everybody in the United States with regards to studying civil rights.

These people should then understand that firearms ownership is not just a 'white thing' it is an AMERICAN thing and a basic civil right of ALL CITIZENS no matter what race.Irony-- those people living in high crime areas who don't understand 'stand your ground' laws and the 'castle doctrine'and want to repeal these protections are the very people who would most benefit from them.Know your history so that you will remain a free citizen, not a slave or a subject.

This book appears to be an accumulation of a lifetime of work by Dr. Petrovich. He is careful, methodical, and scholarly in his work. For me, it is not a fast read--but one to be digested. He has done an excellent job in sharing his research in this book. I appreciate Him documenting his research, which helps me in my research of studying the meanings of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet--which I have been working on for 5 years. He has provided some recent understanding of Hebrew and the Alphabet letters (including their meaning) based on Archeological finds.I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in the study of Hebrew.

Douglas Petrovich has a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, with a major in Syro-Palestinian archaeology, and minors in both ancient Egyptian language and ancient Near Eastern religions. Petrovich is the former academic dean and professor at Novosibirsk Biblical-Theological Seminary and currently teaches Ancient Egypt at Wilfrid Laurier University. This is an academic work with a particular audience in mind. That said, while it may require more time to read than anticipated, it could be easily understood by a trained or interested layperson. Critics will inevitably argue that Petrovich found that which he was intending to find, but the meticulous work done therein appears to demonstrate otherwise. This is a fantastic book! The author knows his stuff and it clearly shows. I also like Petrovich's approach to the data. He is very meticulous in his details. Not only does he decipher each letter/symbol one by one but at every point he mentions how other scholars prior to his translations would read or interpret each proto-consonantal letter. Some parts of the book can be very difficult to understand if one lacks knowledge of basic Hebrew grammar. Personally, I only understood most of it because I have been studying Hebrew formally for about a year now. With that said, knowing Hebrew or Middle Egyptian is not a requirement to understand the author's basic points, and of course, each inscription has a corresponding English translation to aid readers who are non-experts. In short, any and everyone can benefit from this book, especially those who are willing to do a little extra homework.One downside about this book is that some of the inscriptions that the author translates do not include any actual photos of the stones and engravings themselves. Also many of these can be difficult to find online and so the reader, at this point in time, is left to rely only on the author's drawings. In other words the reader must have “faith” that Petrovich is interpreting and rendering each symbol/letter correctly. Still though, the inscriptions that do include photos with legible letters are enough to demonstrate the author's thesis sufficiently. For me personally, I thought Sinai 375a was the most compelling to demonstrate the proto-consonantal script as distinctly Hebrew because it includes a proper name unique only to the book of Exodus. Petrovich builds a solid case that a proper name should be read on this inscription because it is followed by an Egyptian Hieroglyph (the tongue of an ox) which means “Overseer.” And as is typical with the Middle Egyptian language it is usually followed by the title of an administrative position, and then by the name of the individual holding that position. Therefore the evidence is compelling that we are dealing with a Hebrew proper name here. It is the author's reading that this is the same name found in the book of Exodus. This name uses only 6 Hebrew letters, which if read in any modern Hebrew Bible is as follows: Aleph-Het-Yod-Samek-Mem-Kaf. When translated into English this name is Ahisamach. (Exodus 31:6) Petrovich in the appendix to his book does a good job of showing how each of these symbols on the inscription (which the early Israelites borrowed them all from Egyptian Hieroglyphs) corresponds to the modern letters named above. Perhaps the most debatable is the author's choice to choose a fish symbol to be representative of the “S” sound and therefore corresponding to the modern Samek. This is because scholars have been divided on this issue in the past, with some electing to transliterate this as the letter “D” The reason being is that the eastern Semitic word for “fish” is the term “Dgn.” Even the specific Hebrew word for fish is "dag." However, Petrovich convincingly demonstrates that the early Israelites were in fact using this symbol to remind them of something that stinks. Dead fish along the banks of the Nile were known to produce an unpleasant smell. Therefore the fish symbol reminded them of the Hebrew word “Sarah” which means to stink. And so this letter makes the “S” sound. Interesting enough, the Egyptian word which means “to cause to stink” includes the K5 fish determinative. The conclusion to read “S” is also supported by the fact that the Egyptian word for “corpse” also includes the symbol of a fish and of course, most convincingly, all the other inscriptions can be translated successfully when Petrovich reads “S” for them, and cannot be reasonably translated when “D” is read.All in all, the inscription reads as follows: “The overseer of minerals, Ahisamach. The one having being elevated is weary to forget."In summary, I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the reliability of biblical history. However, due to the polarizing nature of the topic this book is expected to be scrutinized for a while. And rightly so! This book is so paradigm shifting it will require the work of many experts to judge it's contents accordingly. Christopher Rollston and others have already begun that task. The author himself, as of this point in time, has done a good job at responding to negative and critical evaluations of his work in my opinion. But only the passage of time will reveal the full strength of this new paradigm. The author himself acknowledges this fact in his introduction. Also the present writer of this amazon review realizes that even the words above should be taken with caution until more time and more work has been diligently achieved. With that said, I am grateful to the author for the immense time and effort he has put into this endeavor, and I am especially thankful for him honoring my request to send me additional photos of Sinai 375a so that I could analyze myself. This was such a blessing.Lastly, the only thing I can say is “let the debates begin!”

Don't waste your money! This book is a joke. Let's say you want to scam people out of their money so you write a how to book. You don't really know what you're talking about but the sucker buying the book doesn't know that. This book is just a bunch of babble. It doesnt have any information of any use. Im a truck driver for a container hauling company and am interested in putting together my own container home. First thing I'm going to do is throw this book away. It doesn't even have illustrations. The plans are just a half page line drawing.

Nope. Don't waste your time or money getting this book. Minimal info, nothing of value learned.And if you're thinking of getting the similar book by Marc Rollins, don't. Virtually identical uselessness.

Fantastic story about a man with unique and complex ideas about the nature of his romantic relationships. Even better than the movie that was made in the late 1980's. Definitely thought-provoking. The author presents a unique way of looking at the world. I can't say the characters are admirable, but they are realistic and are presented from a sympathetic perspective. Highly recommended but keep in mind this is fairly cerebral, meant to be read at slow pace. Many sections stand to be read through more than once before proceeding.

Beautiful. The movie was good but this gave a far better feel of the story. And, duh, Milan Kundera is one of the best authors ever. Can't believe it took me 15 years to getting around to reading it. One of those types of books where you mark a page or ten because the phrasing is so personal and relevant to life in general. And yes, "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" is explained and .... simply beautiful. You want to read it more than once. Stunning.

I enjoyed this a bunch and there were some real gem of quotes.“Anyone whose goal is 'something higher' must expect someday to suffer vertigo. What is vertigo? Fear of falling? No, Vertigo is something other than fear of falling. It is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified, we defend ourselves.”A good, thought provoking read.

I could not bear to put this down once I started.This is a story that shouldn't be confused as anything other than the complete story of current and vintage humanity.I didn't want to read the whole thing in one sitting because then the fantastic, sensual, deep masterpiece would be finished. I had to put it down occasionally, only to be regurgitating the sentences in my mind and reviewing the concepts written in the book, in words I could never have come up with for things I have known for a long time. Could that be the sign of a brilliant writer- one who can beautifully and perfectly write things you have known for a long time but couldn't ever articulate?My friend who recommended it was so in love with the book that she got a tattoo of a bowler hat in it.

A beautifully written story of love, based on the two main characters of Tomas and Tereza and the lesser characters of Sabina and Franz during the Russian invasion of Czechslovakia which began in 1968.Kundera is a genius at getting below the skin of his characters, dissecting close to the bone so that human foibles become at least understandable if not totally acceptable. In this way the characters are real and likeable.Even though Tomas is a serial womanizer his love for Tereza and his other admirable qualities have the reader on his side.This book will not be enjoyed by those who see the world as plain black and white but for those who love a philosophical discussion against the background of a true historical event you will not be sorry you read this book.I have no hesitation in awarding five stars for this sensitive and heart warming book.I absolutely related to the discussion on animals towards the end of the book and felt the grief of Tereza and Tomas at the loss of their beloved dog Kerenin.Highly recommended for those who enjoy thoughtful and intelligent literature.

Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of the Being is a pithy masterpiece. The author captures the essence of the 'being' of four or five chief characters. He manages to describe their thoughts and deeds, what weighs upon their souls, what rescues their selves from onerous existence, in an achingly beautiful, yet unobtrusive way. The infidelity & philandering of Tomas, the doubts and dreams of Tereza, the artistic idiosyncrasies of Sabrina and the intellectual myopia and indulgences of Franz are as engaging as the philosophical and historical notes that flow through the story.The novel is a deep and defining study of humanity in 20th century, of our hopes and failings, of the moral and material needs and our capacity for being tormented by our pasts and passions. There are paragraphs and paragraphs of poetic beauty, and yet everything is written in the most simple, straightforward sentences. The description of Karenin, the dog owned by Tereza, is brilliant, especially in the final chapter of the book. Another favorite chapter was on "words misunderstood", for in the romance between beings belonging to two different pasts and two countries, where seemingly same words assume drastically different connotations.This is a mature novel, meant for readers who can look beyond the surface. On surface this is novel laced with sexual content and contexts, a novel that describes the gimmicks of communist Russia and their stay in Czech country, a novel that spurns philosophical ramblings interwoven with discussion about the "sh** being a onerous theological problem". On surface the novel is story of infidelity. But deep down this is a novel that strikes chord with the intelligent reader on so many different levels, be it romance, ethics, interpretation, or our own complexities arising from our own unique pathways of life.The novel weighed on me, confronted me with many issues, ideas and memories, and then at times, it released me from my own suffocating and smothering thoughts and experiences. I highly recommend this novel. If you enjoy Lawrence, Joyce and Gibran, be introduced to Kundera, who carries the torch of modernist writing ahead: and in what style!

This is my absolute favorite book, and I bought it for my dad for his birthday since has said he was having writer's block. The movie based on this book was a love story and missed the point, this book itself is all in depth philosophy with a story about 3 relatable characters that help to express the concepts. Its a tough read but so beautiful. Personally, I prefer the audiobook.
