This is a great book for a person like me, not very organized in my religious observances.... I found everything I needed, and if those prayers are still not answered... well, that is not the book's fault! May be one day...

Loved the history of the prayers. Beautifully written

This is perfect for almost any woman that has an interest in prayer and not having to follow the set format of a service or is too busy to. It covers just about any situation and is written in both Hebrew and English so that you can pray in English especially of you don't understand Hebrew well. I recomend this as a gift at any occation for someone who has interests in Jewish thoughts.

I love this book because it has so much history and tells you where the prayers come from, often who wrote them and why, and what situation they were in when each one was written. Some of the prayers are translations or alternate versions of standard prayers found in standard siddurim. Each prayer is written in English, and then the facing page is either Hebrew or Yiddish or Ladino! Beautifully written, beautifully collected, something to cherish and pass down to the young ladies in the family! I have been using this to extend my regular prayers, and to extend my own conversations with HaShem. Prayers for joyous occasions, troubling times, daily thoughts, etc. are all included. There is even a beautiful, short Haggadah written on toilet paper during the holocaust by a concentration camp victim, slipped to another woman just before the author passed on! Even the way this book came about is beautiful...you really should read the inside cover.

this is a beautiful book with prayers for lots of situations.

Beautifully written, however not as many prayers as I expected nor the type I was looking for.

This is good when traveling as I have this and my bible downloaded into Kindle. Saves on how much packing I have to do.

#800,200 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

One of the toughest things to do when in dialogue with a Jehovah's Witness is to document your claims. For example, it does very little good to attempt to argue against the false prophecies of 1914 and 1975 without actual documentation. Even if you have the quotes, the JW might think that you somehow took them out of context. This is why Art Barrett's book is so valuable. He provides actual photocopies for the JW to see the errors for himself. One of the problems many of us have in witnessing to JW's is to get them to think for themselves. With the Watchtower as their authority (they won't admit this, of course), they will most likely not be persuaded by biblical arguments. That is why many have such difficulties. But if you can demonstrate that the Watchtower is unreliable, then you can actually engage the JW in a two way conversation and allow them to think things through without the WT.Even though this documentation is available in this book, it must be handled with discernment. Attempting to argue against the false prophecies on your first meeting with a particular JW might just ruin an opportunity for a second meeting. Remember, the JW's aren't interested in people who are just out to disprove the WT. They want people who are seeking answers. That is why a relationship should first be built with the JW. And when they find that they can trust you as a genuine person, then you can lovingly and firmly expose the WT errors.Over all, this is an extremely valuable book. Not only does it provide documentation, but it is written in a dialogue format between a JW and a Christian. This allows the reader to see both sides and be prepared for many of the rebuttals that a JW might offer in a conversation. The material is very easy to read and will provide the beginning apologist to have a good foundational grasp on the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses. Besides the documentation, I wouldn't recommend this work for those who have been studying the JW's in depth. Excellent work though!

Love it!

I gave this 5 stars but must clarify that rating. The first of 3 parts is vital to show the arrogance of Russell and Rutherford in particular, as well as the idiots that followed. Magnani copies entire pages of old Watchtowers and other Society publications over the years, showing the context of a part underlined. Rutherford in particular made really strong bold predictions that completely failed. One has to wonder why they would speak with such guarantees and convictions and not leave a little bit of room to wiggle out later. Such arrogance, to me, indicates they do not fear the people leaving and that the leaders can do almost anything without consequences and history does tend to bear that out. This first part is wonderful stuff if one wants to discredit JW history. On the other hand, the majority of this book, the 2nd and 3rd parts, deal with doctrine, finding favor in typical born-again doctrine and traditional pagan Christians tradition, which as I see it, is no better and no improvement on Watchtower doctrine. One set is as bad as the other. I detest them both. so 2 thirds of this book is a waste. But for the 1st part alone, I say this book is 5 stars and worth the purchase since it is extremely cheap and affordable. Get it if you want to embarrass JWs. But also learn from it because this problem is not that of JWs alone. Every denomination suffers from the same arrogance and stupidity, never in short supply. Enjoy!

The danger of Jehovah's Witnesses (even from a simply moral non religious perspective) is not their interpretation of the Bible. Interpretation is one thing, but straight out lies, misquotes, and additions with the attempt to decisive is another thing all together.I have already done some research and study on this topic as I frequently speak with Jehovah's Witnesses, and so I was recommended this book by a friend and thought it might be another tool in the box. I am not sure there was anything new or different in this book that I had not already studied or heard about. The main thing I liked about it, which many others mentioned is the documents to back up what you are saying. The only failure with that is that anything over 10 years ago is simply brushed off as "receiving new light." JW's are slippery fish, and it is hard to corner them. When Jehovah's Witnesses first started they had to use the Bibles that were available and just tell all their people that they couldn't understand them, or that verses were translated wrong. That left their people helpless to understand the Bible without the Watchtower's aid. Just read this quote, “A person would go into darkness after two years of reading the Bible alone; would be in the light reading the Studies in the Scriptures alone.” (Watchtower 9/15/1910, p. 4685) Now they have written their own Bible and given it to their faithful. In their previous version of the New World Translation they had parenthesis around all the added words, like "Son" at the end of Acts 20:28 and many times throughout Colossians chapter 1 (this version used to be visual and comparable directly from the website, it appears that it has been taken down now.) In the new 2013 version all the added words are now a part of God's words. The simple danger of this can be seen in Colossians 1. If I say, "All cows are white," Those words mean something, they convey a thought. If I say, "All other cows are white." That conveys a totally different thought. It signifies that now there is something I have which is not like all the others, whereas the other statement is all inclusive. Did Jesus create all things, or all [other] things. Read John 1:3, Isaiah 44:24. Leave God's words and then if you interpret them differently than I do, we can discuss that, but by changing the words you are deceiving people. Some of this book at hand seemed to lack in research as well. There are some wonderful quotes from the Watchtower about worshiping Christ which were missed, like this one from the 1949 yearbook, "Those who do worship him as the slain Lamb of God whose death provided a sin-offering are the only ones entitled to any hope of surviving and passing alive into the new world.” All the yearbooks from 1927-1961 and awake! issues from 1946-1963 and much more are downloadable for free from the Watchtower Archive (wtarchive) site.As far as straight out lies, here is just one example from their website. On an article titled "Myth 4: God Is a Trinity" they say, "FACT: The trinitarian dogma is a late fourth-century invention." Pick up a copy of Ante-Nicene Fathers: Volume 1-9 from Amazon and you will see that many people taught the trinity before the fourth century. It is either a straight lie, a very poorly worded phrase, just unfortunate ignorance, or a slyly worded phrase with intent to deceive. Do the research and you be the judge. You don't have to be a Christian to understand that it is morally wrong to lie, and deceive people. Sure go ahead and teach your interpretation, I am one for liberty so I will give you the freedom of interpretation, and I willing to put my interpretation to the test. But at least be honest enough to tell the truth and give the facts to the people, before you add your interpretation and deceive a multitude of people.All-in-all for the book being written in the 1980's without the vast expanse of the internet it is a decent book for what it is and when it was written. Even some of these documents are hard to find online today. I just don't see it convincing JW's against their ideas, which I think is the overall objective of the book.

Have only read a chapter or two. To me it is a very hard read.

The Catholicism Answer Book: The 300 Most Frequently Asked Questions

Review

This book provides answers to 288 commonly asked questions about the Catholic faith, grouped under the headings of doctrine, worship, the Ten Commandments, prayer, church history, and "this and that." Written by the authors of John Paul II for Dummies and 101 Things Everyone Should Know About the Bible, it is aimed at a popular rather than a scholarly audience. While it does provide some helpful information on the basics of Catholicism, answers sometimes consist of roundabout explanations that could be expressed more succinctly, and some sections are confusing in their inclusion of concepts not directly related to the subject under discussion. Some of the questions seem rather odd, such as whether God created alien life on other planets and whether "daily bread" comes from bakeries, and some of the explanations are somewhat flippant. Sources include the 1997 Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as papal encyclicals and church staples like the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas, which underline the traditional/conservative orientation of this work. Of some interest to public libraries.-Denise J. Stankovics, Rockville P.L., Vernon, CT -- Library Journal, April 1

Love this book so much that I bought many more for Christmas and will again. Answers to my curiosities which leads to more reading = learning = increased interest = better Mass attention = better parenting.Great for any age. Best thing we ever did for our grandkids.

This is a great resource for cradle Catholics, RCIA candidates, neophytes, and even those with a casual, passing interest in Catholicism. If someone tells you something incredulous and erroneous about what the Church actually teaches, you can find the truth in this handy guide. It covers questions from "Who is God?" to "Are Catholics Christian?" Spoiler alert: Catholics ARE Christians, the 1st Christian Church is the Catholic Church.

I purchased this book for our adoration chapel. I noticed it is the most used book on the bookshelf. This book is interesting, informative, easy to read and 100% trustworthy. Highly recommend for anyone interested in learning more about the details and devotions of the Catholic Faith. Even cradle Catholics will learn much, and find better ways to express Catholic teaching to those who ask. Great for the "New Evangelization" of our times. I like this book better than most others written in this format due to the style of writing.

I have purchased three of these books over the last several years. One for myself just to get more informed about catholism. then when I told friends of mine and they were non-practicing Catholics, they wanted one too. So informative in an easy way to understand.

If you are an informed Catholic, the book is a good review of Catholic doctrine. If you are an uninformed Catholic, the book will re-educate you on Catholic doctrine.

Very satisfied with this item.

As its name suggests, "The Catholicism Answer Book" provides answers to common questions Catholics and non-Catholics ask about the Catholic faith. It covers a wide range of topics, from the nature of God to the liturgy to Church history. The answers provided are straightforward, orthodox, and concise. Each response is essentially a mini-essay on the subject under discussion. Controversial topics are handled exceptionally well, including questions concerning the Crusades, the Protestant movement, the all-male and celibate priesthood, and Latin in the liturgy. The book would be especially useful to those considering reception into the Church, since it covers areas "cradle" Catholics may take for granted. Trigilio and Brighenti infuse the text with their characteristic wit and humor; a question on liturgical movements and gestures is entitled "Why all the Catholic calisthenics?"That said, it would have benefited from a better editor. There are a handful of typos, including the misspelling of Origen's name. The book also confuses the Great Schism, a period during which French kings moved the papacy to Avignon France and three "popes" claimed the chair of Peter, with the Eastern Schism, the eleventh-century split between Catholicism and the Eastern churches. Although some historians use the term "Great Schism" to describe either event, here it is used in reference to both (cf: questions 211 and 218.) Hopefully, these errors will be corrected in a subsequent edition of this otherwise commendable book.

Will use this book, to increase my faith!

About the Author

Carl Sagan (1934-1996) was the Director of Cornell University’s Laboratory for Planetary Studies. He played a leading role in the American space program and was an adviser to NASA since its inception. He briefed the Apollo astronauts before their flights to the Moon, and was an experimenter on the Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo expeditions to the planets. He helped solve the mysteries of the high temperatures of Venus (answer: massive greenhouse effect), the seasonal changes on Mars (answer: windblown dust), and the reddish haze of Titan (answer: complex organic molecules). For his work, Dr. Sagan received the NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement, and the Pulitzer Prize for The Dragons of Eden. His 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage won the Emmy and Peabody awards. The National Science Foundation declared that his “research transformed planetary science… his gifts to mankind were infinite.”

Once upon a time, the young Albert Einstein tried to imagine what it would be like to ride on a beam of light and what the universe would look like to that observer. Writing in his 1985 book, Comet, author Carl Sagan takes the reader on another imaginary journey. This time the observer is riding aboard a wayward comet traveling from the Solar System's outer fringe, around the sun and back into deep space again, giving the reader a birds eye view of what you would see on such a trip. Who knows where such "flights of fancy" can lead? The former; to a paradigm changing theory. And the latter; to an in depth look at a strange visitor from the depths of space. Part science, part history and, in the original hard-bound edition, a generous helping of classical and new art work. While the Kindle edition has the charts, graphs and many black & white illustrations the beautiful color paintings are either missing or rendered in B&W. While this does not diminish Sagan's text in any way, it would have been a nice addition to the overall reading experience. You have to wonder what the publishers were thinking when they OK'd this treatment of both Cosmos and Comet for e-reader release. The text itself is stunning, Sagan's knowledge seems unlimited and his writing skills were never better. This edition is the 1997 update by co-author Ann Druyan to include any new findings (to that point) and theories on comets and astronomy but you may want to use this book as a jumping off point to more recent writings. The history of comets and how they interacted with human society is fascinating and Sagan takes you back to the beginning, to our earliest records of comet sightings. What are comets made of? How are they formed? Follow the birth and life of our Mysterious Traveler on it's journey through the Solar System. The author covers the mechanics of how their orbits are created and the risk that comets may pose to our planet. If a large object, comet or meteor, ever struck the Earth it could have a devastating effect on our environment and all life, including humans. Has this ever happened? What is the connection between comets and meteorites? Sagan covers all this and more in this classic science book. The book closes with a section of extreme speculation and philosophy that the author offers up for your consideration, take it for what you will, just keep an open mind. From Sagan's point of view the future has boundless possibilities. Comets may be an unlimited resource of water, minerals and energy that we can mine for use in space-construction or colonization of other planets. All it needs is the courage to take a course of action that will benefit us in the short run and future generations in the long run as well. Whether you're reading Comet for the science, history, or just for nostalgic reasons it's a worthwhile read. So buy your ticket and hop aboard the Comet express. There's always room for another observer. I had no technical or formatting problems with this Kindle edition.LastRanger

I'm a big fan of the late great scientist/astronomer Carl Sagan. I've read most of his books and most are 5 stars...see my reviews. As a 40 year amateur astronomer I found Comet by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan done fantastically well. Carl was always great at explaining a complex subject for the non scientist and keeping a complex subject interesting and allowing the reader to want to continue reading.Comet has loads of beautiful pictures, drawings, and diagrams by very good artists especially my favorite Jon Lomberg (I bought a lithograph from him "First Baby on Mars"...absolutely wonderful). Back to Comet!Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan give a great 1/3 of the book to the history of what mankind thought comets were, from evil things that foretold famine, death for armies, earthquakes and any number of disasters, to gradually a more modern "dirty ice ball" approach. Then we learn the composition of comets. Some rich in organic matter with ices of methane, ammonia, carbon dioxide and mostly regular water ice plus some heavy water isotopes and a little silicates and metals. A huge "dirty iceball".We see the near comets with orbits starting beyond Jupiter to comets way way out in the far reaches of the Oort cloud where orbits around the sun may take 10 million years. We see the different "ices" that boil off at different spacings from the sun, with regular water ice being the last to go as comets get closer to the sun. We learn about comet comas, their tails and their nucleus heads. We learn some asteroids may be worn out comets as each time comets get close enough to the sun they slowly "die" as a meter or so of ice is boiled off until rocky silicates, and heavy metals like iron are left.We see the various extinction ages where most of the species on Earth were eliminated with comets crashing into the Earth as main contributors. We see about 69 million years ago, the extinction of the dinosaurs possibly by a comet impact, allowing mammals to evolve with no competition from the dinosaurs, allowing the evolution of man.Lots of history about many famous and not so famous scientists and ancient theorists, and how different religions from different countries perceived comets. Lots of theories on comet formation, where they come from, how many there are, and where they are now. Are we in danger of getting hit by one now! Explanation of the inner and outer Oort cloud and the far distant comets formed from the very beginning of the solar system. These comets have been in the cold about 10 degrees above absolute zero) for billions of years and the extreme low temperatures and extreme distance from the sun have allowed them no interaction with other solar bodies. This allows their composition to be basically unchanged since the beginning of the solar system. We see mans quest to find the composition of comets using high altitude U2 planes to get cosmic dust for study. Many spacecraft shot up for photos of comets, solar wind detection, and trying to get any comet particles. Fascinating stuff.Lots of info on the favorite comet Halley plus lots of information on the scientist Halley. Lots of other comets mentioned plus their orbits shown.Talk of possible future colonization of the comets in the Oort cloud and growing gigantic trees on the comet... miles high and wide! Kind of Sci Fi to me but interesting.Comet is a fascinating book both for the novice who has never seen a comet, the 40 year amateur astronomer like me, and the professional astronomer/scientist. All will appreciate this book. There is no difficult math. All will enjoy the many pictures and parents can show and tell their child from this book. Would make a great book for middle school, high school or a college astronomy 101 course. Also got out of this book there is so much that we don't know about comets, especially about the extreme orbit comets but we are learning more everyday. Do yourself and family a favor. Next time a naked eye comet event happens enjoy it. You may not even need binoculars or a telescope. Halley comes around every 75 years, some comets less time, some more time and some are never seen again explosion, decomposition or flung out of their orbits by gravitation slingshot effect by Jupiter or more reasons). Just a fascinating sight to see out your backyard sky. If you have the chance enjoy.I sure miss Carl Sagan. Even though he never knew of me, I knew of him and consider him a friend.

This book tells you a lot that you never thought to wonder about. What color are comets? Black. Why? Because ices are driven off by the sun, leaving dark carbon and silicon dust. Sagan and Druyan cover comets in world history as well as in the present day. And the only weak spot in my view is the pontificating that Carl can't resist inserting. But maybe you like that stuff. If not, there is plenty else to appreciate. Having said all that, the book is somewhat dated. Perhaps Ann Druyan will produce another update incorporating recent findings about comets and the Kuiper belt.

Bought this as a gift. Boyfriend really liked it and we happened to be viewing a meteor shower the week he read about it, which was neat; however, I did buy this explicitly because it was stated the book was signed and neither author had signed it. The seller apologized and refunded my purchase money... I know all they could do ad hoc was refund my money, but I was miffed that it stated signed and it was not at all! Three stars because it is a nice book, but that's Sagan's doing.

When I saw that there was a revised version out of Carl Sagan's wonderful book COMET, even though it is in paperback, I hurried to snatch it up. I noticed that the date of publication was close upon Sagan's death so perhaps that explains why there doesn't seem to be much that was different in it from the first edition. By all means, get the original edition, in hardback if possible, as it has wonderful color illustrations. This edition is fine for someone who needs to read Carl Sagan's wonderful writing on comets-its just that the original is so much better.

You can never go wrong with Sagan!

Sagan is so predictable,,, good material presented in a smooth, enjoyable manner...it is always the same. He is damned good and you will love this book.
