The Awakening Body: Somatic Meditation for Discovering Our Deepest Life

Review

“Reggie Ray makes accessible some of the deepest Buddhist teachings through connection with the sensing, living body. This book will be a companion and practical guide to all those interested in discovering the wisdom of the body, whether beginners or longtime meditators.”—Peter A Levine, PhD, author of Waking the Tiger   “A powerful book that brings the body fully into awakening.”—Roshi Joan Halifax, Abbot, Upaya Zen Center   “Reggie Ray’s decades of practice, study, and teaching shine through The Awakening Body.  For those drawn to somatic practice, this is an essential guide. The re-contextualization of ancient and deep understandings makes them highly accessible for the modern practitioner.  Reggie has become so familiar with these esoteric practices that he can explain them quite simply, revealing their true purpose for all who wish to engage them.”—Sharon Salzberg  “The Awakening Body is a vital resource for practitioners of all movement disciplines to plumb the depths of their somatic interior. I think this book will be a tremendous resource for those wanting to yoke to their innermost breath and pulse in order to become clear sentient beings, wide awake in the world.”—Tias Little, author of Yoga of the Subtle Body   “The Awakening Body is an unusual book. It offers detailed somatic practices (meant to be accompanied by guided meditations offered online) for awakening to the vastness within—beyond thinking and conceptualization. As a Zen practitioner, much of this sounds familiar to me, but this practice is clearer and more detailed than typical suggestions offered in Zen. Reggie Ray has spent a lifetime working on somatic techniques, both in and out of Vajrayana Buddhism, and has distilled what he has learned into a concrete methodology. This book is of interest to those who would want to devote themselves to its practice—as well as those seeking illumination for their own meditation.—Zoketsu Norman Fischer, Zen priest and poet, co-author of What Is Zen?: Plain Talk for a Beginner’s Mind   “Reginald Ray is illuminating an essential point for our happiness, healing, and transformation in this priceless book. He clearly and profoundly shows us the importance of the spirituality of the body and how to practice in a way that can be integrated into everyday life. This is an eloquent expression of his work that has already helped many people.”—Anam Thubten, author of Embracing Each Moment and No Self, No Problem

This is a really excellent book that I would recommend to anyone. I particularly liked his explanations of how meditation can bring awareness back to the body and away from the thinking mind. Many people don't understand that, and make the mistake of thinking meditation is meant to be more mind based. Here, the expansion of awareness is not that of the mind, but of the body itself, and re-integration of the two creates a new form of unified, direct, "spiritual" perception. The intelligent aware presence of the body precedes that of the brain, and that is what his practices attempt to help us unveil. I suppose I appreciated the "theory" more than the actual practices in this book, which in themselves are not all that different from many other types of "body work" (some of which you might already make use of). But the theory is really important, because without it, the practices may not succeed in their ultimate purpose. To awaken from thinking, it is first necessary to wake up as a body. The body is a gateway to our deepest source of awareness.

Only read this book if you want transformation at a cellular level. I suspect that most people who get this book are looking for deep personal change. The first third of the book is a very compelling and motivating introduction to somatic meditation, the middle third is a description of six core somatic practices, and the last third explains how the practices unfold and what the benefits are. These include feeling like you've come home for the first time, feeling alive in your body and a newfound sense of safety and confidence. There are at least a dozen life-changing benefits along these lines, which you don't have to wait long to begin realizing, but there is a catch. You have to practice. This book along with the accompanying MP3 downloadable guided meditations have inspired me to currently practice at least an hour a day. I'm not new to somatic practice and first read Reggie's other book Touching Enlightenment several years ago, but nothing has accelerated me along the path like this book and these six practices. Having read dozens of meditation books, this is my favorite - yes partly because of the writing and insights, but more because of the results. Buckle up and get ready for a ride!

I've been studying meditation with Reggie Ray for over 15 years, and this is the book I've always hoped he'd write. Concise, direct, and practical. It is a practice-oriented book, complete with links to audio recordings to guide you through the six meditation practices covered in detail within the book. While it is more approachable than some of his other books, it still contains profound insights and instructions on how connecting with our own body and our own experience is primary to spiritual, emotional, and physical health and growth. After an informative introduction to the approach of somatic meditation, the book jumps into the six practices; an invitation to start your practice right away. After each of the practices is introduced, there are chapters to deepen our understanding of how these practices impact our relationship with ourselves and the world (and cosmos!) around us, as well as guidance on what to expect as your practice matures.I've given copies of this book to friends that I've always wanted to share these practices with. Far from just a "beginner's guide", the information and the practices in this book are the foundation from which a deeply connected somatic experience of human life can unfold.

This is probably the clearest ever explanation of the somatic path. I love Reggie's meditations, and I feel incredibly grateful to have come across his work. Just wonderful

Even beyond all that's in the book, the guided meditations included as downloadable audio files were exceptional. If you know how good it feels after you floss your teeth, the first one alone (Ten Points Practice) was for me, like flossing for my soul.

Did you buy all of tthose videos by Reggie Ray from Mahumudra to the present ones? Well this book he explains what they are aiming at.Feeling (and being) the stillness, silence, space .... Really a wonderful book! I highly recommend. I recommend his videos too -- along with this book.

I am still working on this book. Ivery much appreciate Reginald Ray's work on the somatic body. He is a good teacher and author: Very understandable and down-to-earth and I very much appreciate that. Makes it easier for me to understand what he is sharing and teaching. That is a sign of a good teacher. I have read and listened to other works by him re the Body and I think he has been working at this a big chunk of his life and this book is kind of a culmination of those years of diligent work.

This book is a wonderful introduction to the Somatic Meditation Practices taught by Reggie Ray. These six practices are beneficial to beginners and experienced meditators. Utilize the online guided meditations offered by Reggie on the publisher's website (at no charge) to help start a practice that will change your life.

Charles Spurgeon, the prince of preachers, has written so many things that it is hard to assimilate it all in the soul. This little book has been such a blessing to me personally, that I have purchased several to give as gifts. Page 139 reads: "The Holy Spirit will guide you in life. He will guide you in death, and He will guide you in glory. He will guard you from modern error and from ancient error too. He will guide you in a way that you know not. Through the darkness, He will lead you in a way you have not seen. These things will He do unto you and not forsake you. Oh, this precious Scripture. I seem to have before me a great cabinet full of jewels, rich and rare. May the Holy Spirit Himself come and hand these out to you and may you be adorned with them all the days of your life." (Page 138)Yes, and this is my prayer for you also, you who might be considering purchasing and using this little booklet.

Good book with examples of how the Holy Spirit Works. An easy read would recommend.

Charles Spurgeon magnificently defines and outlines the power of the Holy Spirit for both the seasoned traveler and the novice convert. A small yet influential book that comprehensively unpacks the power of the Holy Spirit’s personhood and sphere of influence accessible to all believers.

A beautiful book--one you can turn to in any hour, for any need, and feel strengthened and refreshed. Spurgeon never fails to move us, deeply.

Love !!

I re-read certain chapters, and passages to stay focused. This short book is must read!

Loved this book! I have learned the role of the Spirit over the years, as my faith grew and deepened, but I had been somewhat oblivious to the power that He brings to us as followers of Christ. Very eye-opening.

Well worth the read, makes the subject so clear and easier to understand

Staying Up Much Too Late: Edward Hopper's Nighthawks and the Dark Side of the American Psyche, by Gordon Theisen

From Publishers Weekly

Hopper's Nighthawks is one of the most iconic images in 20th-century art, but Theisen's analysis of the "desolate, alien, denatured, perverse, [and] desperate" masterpiece is too facile to support all the cultural weight he wants to place upon it. The interpretations veer between the obvious (he characterizes the urban setting as representing an absence of nature) and the bizarre (he imagines the painting's four figures engaging in group sex). Some sections add flashes of insight—like a discussion of Hopper's familiarity with commercial illustration that segues into the influence of Warhol's Pop—but in trying to make Hopper resonate with everything from cool jazz to Robert Crumb's underground comics, Theisen overreaches and occasionally stumbles. Discussing film noir, for example, he dwells on the "movie screen–like proportions" of Nighthawks, although Hopper completed the painting a decade before the introduction of wide-screen projection. At times, the fledgling critic can't seem to make up his mind: is the uniform menu of the diner supposed to be depersonalizing, as he suggests in one chapter, or subversively democratic? As Theisen meanders through his checklist of cultural pessimism, some readers may conclude that Nighthawks is better off letting its powerful imagery speak for itself. 8-page color insert. Review

Advance Praise for STAYING UP MUCH TOO LATE:"A personal meditation on Hopper's most famous painting, Staying Up Much Too Late should introduce Gordon Theisen as exactly what he is: one of the true originals in American letters. In Staying Up Much Too Late Gordon Theisen dismantles the American Dream like a savvy child patiently unscrewing an Erector set Shangri-la. He begins by skewering American optimism, ends with a hymn of praise to un-American pessimism, and in between demonstrates convincingly that Edward Hopper's great painting Nighthawks is imbued with the underhistory of America. We live in the loneliest country on Earth, Theisen tells us, and his darkly vivid language, like Hopper's brushwork, renders it with deadpan accuracy. What a lovely book."--John Vernon, author of A Book of Reasons

Insightful, gorgeous, well-informed commentary on art and culture.

Great book.

The reviewer who gave the book three stars was correct: the best part of the book included the references to film noir. It seemed that the author had a paucity of actual facts about the artist, Edward Hopper, and was forced to flesh out his meager material by including one random fact after another, whether they actually related to the subject at hand or not. Having spent hours in Chicago looking at the actual painting, "Nighthawks," this reviewer discovered reason after reason why the subject matter, and Hopper's treatment of it, has made it become an American icon. Including such artistic detail within Mr. Gordon Theisen's manuscript might have made it far more interesting to the average reader, as well as to the critical art student wanting to learn why and how Mr. Edward Hopper was able to create such a masterpiece.

At first glance, I expected this to be a heavy duty history of Hopper's painting, with copious documentation, contemporary views of the work, and lots of secondary source citations--something like reading a published dissertation. I was pleasantly surprised to find Theisen's book is not an ordinary work of scholarship. It's not so much academic art criticism as it is a comment on American culture and mores. Theisen uses Hopper's seminal work, "Nighthawks," as a jump-off point to discuss film noir, Pulp Fiction, Andy Warhol, pornography and Puritanism, the Beats, Russ Meyer, the Great Gatsby--you name it. At times, it feels overstuffed, and it contains unnecessary editorializing (about the Iraq War, for example) and some sloppy mistakes (as one amazon reviewer has noted, Theisen wrongly says Gatsby kills himself at the end of Fitzgerald's novel). But overall it is an imaginative and engrossing work that will inform those who don't know much about Hopper the man and who always found him an understudied artist. Theisen's book could have a place on a cultural studies or U.S. history shelf, and it would make interesting reading for a freshman American history survey class. An unusual, though very readable thought piece.

This book examines the dark underside of American life, the kind ominously represented in Nighthawks, the famous painting by Edward Hopper. Theisen quickly sets up the difference between the optimistic, sunny, daytime America and the world of night, and not even night so much as the non-mainstream undiscovered parts.I enjoyed this book particularly much because of the disparate elements the author brings together. although to some people, talking about Pulp fiction, Weegee the photographer, and Hopper together is hard to follow, I picked up right away on his meaning and felt really interested to read a scholarly unpacking of the imagery, meaning, and themes.I compare this book to Paul Fussell's oeuvre, books which say, "Ever notice this theme is in a lot of things?" and then go on to enlighten the reader and make you smarter and more educated than you were before.Definitely buy this book.

Reading this Book made me feel like I too was Staying Up Much Too Late. Using the iconic Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, Theisesn roams into the dark parts of our conscience that typically surface during late night conversations. Having visited a retrospect of Hopper's work, I was stunned by the darkness of his vision - stunned and attracted by it. Nighthawks is emblematic of this darkness, as are masterpieces like Automat and Office at Night. Theisen ties the symbolism with Hopper's work to the darkness of the American soul in the twentieth century. His analysis is spot on and very applicable to Hopper's work. The writing is accessible and flows smoothly. If you are interested in the darker part of the American conscience, this book is a good place to live for a while.

I found the last chapters of the book fairly8 helpful--with their discussion of the films noirs and how Hopper's works fit into that framework. The book, for the most part, however, is disjointed. It reads like the term paper of a smart but procrastinating college student who needs to finish a term paper by a deadline and doesn't spend time polishing his thoughts or meshing them with the subject at hand. The author gets into manifold discussions about numerous icons of American life--and loosely links them, at the end of the section, to Hopper's work. He also tosses his own biases into the discussions, mainly dealing with his opinions on George W. Bush and the War in Iraq--half baked thoughts that date the book unnecessarily. He takes for a given, for example, that Bush's tax program is aimed at aiding the rich (and screwing the poor?). One does not have to be a Bush supporter to think of other reasons behind the tax plan(monetary policy, for example?).The author also throws in a bit too much slang into his discussions--especially sexual slang. This self-conscious "with-it-ness" diminishes the author's rhetorical power and is off-putting.The book was fairly interesting, although I found it not to be a page turner. Instead, it was similar to sitting next to a bright undergraduate at a dinner party and listen to him ramble on until you feel you have to get up and leave the table for a while. He has some noteworthy points to say about Hopper's life, especially his abusive relationship with Jo. For the most part, Hopper was a taciturn man. Unlike, say, Salvador Dali, who never ceased talking about himself and everything else that came to mind, Hopper was fairly much a closed box.On the whole, however, the book seems like it was intentionally expanded from what might have been a tightly constructed essay into a "padded" long piece. From the author's other titles, it seems that he is a successful professional writer, so he certainly deserves credit for his skills. I find, however, that the art historians and critics of Taschen Books do a much better job of art of opening up this closed artist to his public.

I have a number of years of programming and system experience, but had not been exposed to Access. I decided to rewrite my business systems using Access to convert them from the Paradox system that I had used for years. Using this book and Microsoft Office Access(TM) 2007 Inside Out (Microsoft Office Access Inside Out), I have already rewritten more than half of my systems in a couple of weeks, working on them for a couple of hours each evening. Granted, I am still not an expert, but I have been able to write Virtual Basic macros, designed and completed a number of tables for my data base, forms using multiple subforms, selection boxes, and functional buttons, and a number of professional looking reports. The use of these two books has greatly shortened my learning curve and helped me to be productive in much less time than it would have taken without them.

WOW! 10 stars at least! I had used other databases over the years (I used Quatro Pro for years, then they went away). I battled with Access and others for a few years. I finally got Access 2003 to 'kinda' work for me but I had no power to use it the way a database is meant to be used. Then when 2007 came along (I had to upgrade as I went to Windows 7) I became even more confused. Ribbon? Filtering? Macros? I WISH I HAD GOTTEN THIS BOOK YEARS AGO! After spending just a few hours of reading I now LOVE the ribbon (I used to swear at it) and each chapter I read gives me more power and ease of use. I now LOVE ACCESS, and am becoming a 'power user' thanks to this book. Other software reference book that I've used (the list is long), as well as friends and 'geeks,' have been difficult to follow and boring...[making it impossible to learn much]. Well this book is EXCITING and EASY to read. The author uses great examples, step by step guidelines and screen shots. This should be the book used by all schools and trainers for Microsoft Office 2007.Do yourself a favor, start at chapter 1, read ALL of the book (even if you THINK you know how to do something) & do the exercises. By the end of chapter 3 I realized my biggest problem was 3 or 4 simple (but VITAL) steps that I was always missing. PLUS, you'll quickly learn fast & easy shortcuts, multiple ways to do things based on your personal preference &/or needs.Thank You Mathew and all who contributed to creating this wonderful book, it is honestly one of the BEST investments I have made for my office as well as my hobbies. I thought I knew WORD & EXCEL, but I will be buying those books as well, as I'm sure they too will unlock many hidden tools that I can discover and fall in love with. I NOW ENJOY MY OFFICE AGAIN! I'm always surprising people with the speed that I can access tons of different data. Information is meaningless if you can't access it quickly & easily, if you get this book you will be 'smart' and on top of things quickly. I've even have friends who never saw the need or desire for any database software, now they can't live without it. I could go on, but I'll settle down now (I hope my JOY and ENTHUSIASM about this book has come across to you in this post.Buy and read this book (and keep it handy as a reference manual) you won't regret it! Seriously, Don Michaels.

This is the book for "old pros" and newbies alike. It includes all the information the newcomers need, written clearly, with good screen shot illustrations. It has "Nostalgia Corners" for those who have worked their way through numerous past versions. We don't want to have to plow through explanations of things we already know. This points out things that are no longer the same, and ways to get around that if you really feel you have to.Another thing that should help all users, at least in the Kindle version, is the index. It is very detailed and has very direct links. I found converting databases written in Access 2003 worked smoothly, when I simply looked problems up in the index. And new database development worked equally smoothly. In brief, this is the book I was looking for.

This is a fairly comprehensive Access 2007 manual. However, it could be more concise. For example, "They [action queries] commit changes (usually to multiple records), and once you've applied the changes, you can't reverse them" could have been simply "action queries make irreversible changes to table data". So, if this is a representative possibility, the book could be much shorter without sacrificing information. Also, busy people do not need or want to read unnecessary musings about hypothetical companies. For example, the author writes "In this example, you'll meet Boutique Fudge, a mail-order company that serves decadent treats to a large audience of chocolate-crazed customers. Their daring chefs are always innovating, and they need a better way to manage their ever-growing catalog of chocolate goodness. They also need a way to keep track of customers and the orders they make." Is this supposed to make the book enjoyable? Personally, I just want to cover the material as fast as possible. The author's fantasy is just slowing me down. I would have preferred "Consider a hypothetical company that needs to catalog products and track customers and their orders." Done.

O'Reilly books are the standard fare for any modern software developer and this one is pretty good. The writer or editor tended to use too many contractions, probably with the intent of seeming conversational, but it made the reading choppy. Like reading an article full of spelling errors. But back to the technical content. The examples and exercises were clear through the first three quarters of the book but starting falling apart towards the end. I learned a lot and was able to develop the application I had in mind for Access. The 'Missing Manual' concept is very good - and is especially welcome for any Microsoft product.
