This is an amazing edition of the first few years of the Barry Allen Flash character, along with his girlfriend Iris West and her nephew Wally (introduced soley to be the fastest boy alive, Kid Flash). The paper is a heavy white matte, just the same as the recent paperbacks Superman: The Golden Age Vol. 1 and Justice League of America: The Silver Age Vol. 1. The colors POP! This is miles ahead of other reprints of the same era's materials, such as the Crisis on Multiple Earths series (although has no overlap with those books, in this first volume). If you are turned off by the high cost, weight, size, and gloss of the The Flash Omnibus Vol. 1, this inexpensive counterpart replicates the first half of that book, barring any sort of introduction or forward. This book has no introduction of any kind but does "feature" a table of contents with detailed creator credits, except for the letterers. The art is striking and graphic with excellent detailed reproductions throughout, except for Barry's Showcase origin and a couple pages later on obviously culled from the "Theakstonization" process. The covers also suffer and appear the way most do in pre-70s DC reprints, i.e. thick lines with heavy aliasing, since no high quality production versions still exist. The stories themselves are rather brief and silly, falling not far from the classic DC mold. You see the initial appearances of such villains as Gorilla Grodd, Captain Cold, Weather Wizard, Dr. Alchemy, and the Trickster. After the unintentional, hilariously irresponsible accident that gives young Wally West his skills, he appears in a few backup stories teaching the youth of 1960 just how hip it is to be square. Elongated Man makes his introduction to DC continuity teaming with Barry a few times, though while Barry knows Elongated Man's civilian identity the reverse isn't true. I like when Ralph Dibny has supposedly given up costumed crime fighting, though vacations to South America in his costume seeking the source of the plant that gives him elastic powers. All in all a beautiful volume for completionists though I imagine the juvenille nature of the stories may turn off many, particularly when compared to the popular, heavily story-driven TV show.

The content of this volume has been well reviewed on Amazon, so I'll only speak of the production/printing quality. This is my favorite reprint method ever used. The paper is nice and sturdy but not too thick. It holds color very well, but isn't glossy. The Archives were a nice project but I never like how shiny the pages were. The pages in this volume look exactly the way I imagine these stories looked the day they were printed. The covers are gorgeous. The pastel colors come across very well. I feel like I'm holding history in my hands! Makes me want to reread them over and over again. These include a bit more than the "Flash Chronicles" series did. So they cover more ground per volume. Apparently DC doesn't like to go much past 4 or 5 volumes before starting over. Maybe we'll get through all the never-before-reprinted 60s stories before this series runs out of steam.Side note: I really wish DC would start focusing on the 70s material. Prices of individual issues are skyrocketing these days.

I bought this compilation of silver age Flash comics to read with my son, as we are both fans of the DC characters, and it doesn't disappoint. Here, we get to see how police scientist Barry Allen got his powers and then grow into the superhero known as the Flash. His early adventures are exciting, and we love the artwork. The printing is of very good quality. We have a lot of fun reading this, as we switch off doing the voices for the different characters. It makes for some good father/son time together! When we finish with this one, we'll definitely be getting volume 2.

A wonderful collection of the Flash silver age comics from the 1950's - 1960's!! Most people could never afford to buy the original books, but here you get reprints of Showcase #4, 8, 13 & 14 and The Flash #105-116!! If you were to try to purchase these, you'd be out hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars!! This is well worth the price!!

Ah the flash. Before flash point, before crisis, before any of that. The flash with iris, grodd, solivar, the trickster, captain cold, weather wizard and more! Starting with his origin and some great Carmine Infantino art, it's certainly worth reading!

Fabulous Silver Age fun! Highly recommend for anyone who wants to live like a kid in the Silver Age.

The Human Bone Manual

Review

"Tim White and Pieter Folkens’s The Human Bone Manual is a terrific addition to the tool kit of osteologists and archaeologists. The book-concise, tightly written, and rich in photographic detail-will be the standard human identification reference for generations to come. Every field project or lab that deals with skeletal remains, ancient or modern, will depend on it." --Clark Spencer Larsen, Distinguished Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences, The Ohio State University "As a human osteology manual, this book is an excellent resource for archaeologists, palaeontologists and forensic anthropologists. It is a thoroughly written, well illustrated and can be highly recommended." --Francis Thackeray, Transvaal Museum, Pretoria, South Africa "This volume is a compact form of previously highly successful editions of Human Osteology by these same authors. In its newest form it is somewhat abbreviated, but is nevertheless an extraordinarily accurate and complete guide to all of the fundamentals of osteoanthropology. The illustrations retain their same vivid three dimensional quality as in previous editions, and the accuracy and thorough review of all major methods (aging, sexing, excavation, laboratory care, etc.) have been retained. It is the perfect companion text and manual for any undergraduate or graduate human osteology course, and is equally highly recommended as well to students of medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, chiropractic, etc., simply because it presents such clear and instructive presentations of fundamental human anatomy. It is, quite simply, the best human anatomy manual currently available." --C. Owen Lovejoy, Kent State University

An excellent guide to the human skeletal system. Keep in mind this manual is made to be taken into the field and so is not as thorough as the larger book written by one of the same authors. I purchased this book after I used it in one of my anthropology classes. It is well written and well organized. The book is written primarily for anthropology/archaeology, but it would work for anyone looking for a better understanding of the human skeleton. This is a good reference guide and worth purchasing and adding to your bookshelf.

Paired with the matching textbook, this manual was invaluable for osteology studies! Very handy quick reference guide for lab days. Really needs to be paired with the textbook though, for more in depth learning.

This 'pocket' edition offers the forensic student and professional a handy and detailed field manual. The book is broken into two main sections, the beginning chapters offer an introduction to the science of forensics while the later chapters cover in precise detail the bones and their features systematically. A handy scale and comprehensive chapters on ethics, recovery and modification via animals and weathering makes this volume valuable for the archaeologist. Black and white photographs express bone topography from several angles and from the same individuals to maintain scale and morphology. The brief glossary could be expanded with definitions for basic Latin and Greek scientific terms for beginner students.

Whether you conduct scene investigations for a law enforcement agency, coroner's office, or medical examiner's office, I would recommend that you have this book in your scene bag. Easy to find information, clear and concise black and white photos for comparison, and it even has 2 fold-out rulers for scene photos. However, it's not "Bones for Dummies." It does contain technical information, and you should already have a basic working knowledge of skeletal remains. I also have the author's Human Osteology book, which I highly recommend for students interested in forensic anthropology.

Very detailed and used this for a class but kept it after for references and to keep my mind fresh on the information.

Arrived on time from seller love the outline of the book and was a required text for a osteology course and helps out a lot, however if bought in conjunction with Bass Manual it is the perfect pair to learn and work with. Full of examples and diagrams helps a lot if your a visual learner.

Very interesting read

Great product, as expected, fast shipping

Brinkerhoff's little guide is just the right size for stuffing into the pocket of your cargo shorts or daypack, and it covers a fair sampling of short and easy South Salt Lake City and American Fork area hikes especially suited for hikers with limited abilities or families with small children. Also, the brief hike descriptions, with trailhead info, trail notes, distance and hiking time estimates, are generally helpful and reliable. But this book falls short of its potential, for it could easily have been greatly improved without sacrificing its convenient size or adding much to its cost simply by adding a few more details to some of the hike descriptions, extending the coverage a bit to include a few more popular and spectacular local hikes, and especially, by improving the trail maps.Having hiked every trail in the book, many with this text (and others) in hand, I routinely found myself correcting or supplementing Brinkerhoff's cursory trail descriptions and hand-drawn maps (which are currently little more than wiggly dotted lines with a few essential features like paved roads, trailheads and lakes) with such things as as elevation, distance, topography and terrain notes, maps of converging trails, and occasionally, minor corrections. Admittedly, some of the trails covered in the book don't actually require anything more than instructions to the trailhead, but most of them connect with other trails the reader might want either to follow or avoid, and in such cases better descriptions and maps would be a genuine help. And since the book is so small (and admirably so, for it is by far the most portable of the many Utah trail books available), it could easily have been expanded to cover a greater number of short and popular local trails--like Ensign Peak, Provo's Rock Canyon, and a host of candidates from Sandy and Millcreek Canyon. As it is, despite the title, the text really only covers Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and American Fork Canyon (with the inclusion of a single trail in Pleasant Grove under the American Fork Canyon section). In my opinion, improvements of the kind I have mentioned would have made the book a much more serviceable text without adding significantly to either its bulk or price, and thus, should have been included. As it stands, I recommend "Best Easy Day Hikes SLC" as the best available short and cheap guide to easy Wasatch area trails, but a serious hiker will prefer something like David Day's "Utah's Favorite Hiking Trails," Steve Mann's "100 Hikes in Utah," or John Veranth's "Hiking the Wasatch," all of which are infinitely more informative and helpful--but also bigger and pricier. Or buy this for it's convenient size, and then supplement the applicable entries before your trip with important details from the bigger and better books. Hopefully, a reworked edition will soon save you the trouble.

This book is a must have if you're a hiker near the Salt Lake City area. It's great for the novice hiker, families with smaller children, or nine-to-fivers like myself trying to pick up a quick hike on weekdays before or after work. All of the routes in this book have two conveniences in common. None of the trailheads are more than an hours drive from the bottom of the canyon, and none of the hikes are more than a few miles round trip. This makes it really easy to knock of several hikes a season. Most of them average about one hour of hiking time. Brian Brinkerhoff also does a great job of describing what kind of terrain to expect. Some of the included hikes are paved for easy wheelchair and stroller access, or for the ease of beginning trail runners worried about their ankles. Several on Brinkerhoff's list includes highlights such as waterfalls, alpine lakes, and even some mining ruins, concentrating on the little and big cottonwood canyon areas.

This guide was perfect for my two days of hiking at Alta in August 2006. As a purely recreational hiker traveling alone, this book was the ideal companion.
