From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-The Marquis de Lafayette is famous for helping George Washington and the Continental Army defeat the British. The idea of exploring the development of his relationship with the American general in picture-book form is intriguing, but while this version is long on historical content, it is short on flair. The research is admirable. Direct quotations from Lafayette are featured on almost every page, and lists of sources and places to visit, as well as time lines of the men's lives, provide excellent historical background. However, these figures do not come to life. The author concentrates on Lafayette arriving in America, becoming part of Washington's army, and proving his mettle at the Battle of Brandywine. The large illustrations end when Washington visits the wounded Lafayette and instructs the doctor to care for him "as if he were my son," demonstrating the real affection that developed between them. However, the account goes on for three more pages, illustrated by much smaller images. The awkward transition complicates the book's ability to find an audience. Younger readers who are drawn to the picture-book format may lose interest in the text-heavy later part, while older students studying the Revolutionary War may find the book too simplistic for their needs. The pen-and-ink illustrations with digital coloring are appealing for the most part, but they have an odd flatness that detracts from their overall effect. Spreads that should have depth and a vanishing point seem more one-dimensional than two. French phrases incorporated into the text are defined at the end of the book, not in context, which may be cumbersome for some readers.-Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

*Starred Review* In 1777, the 19-year-old Marquis de Lafayette defied his king’s orders and left France to fight for freedom in America. Though initially expecting little, Washington found the young French nobleman idealistic, courageous, and eager to learn everything he could from the general he idolized. Congress had refused to give Lafayette a command, but he proved his mettle at the Battle of Brandywine, where he rallied retreating troops and suffered a leg wound. The doctor was told by Washington to treat him as he would his son, “for I love him with the same affection.” The picture-book story rather abruptly ends there, though the next three pages continue the vivid account of Washington and Lafayette’s “revolutionary friendship” in an information-packed narrative, followed by detailed time lines of their lives. In addition, there are suggestions of places to visit, a source bibliography, and a glossary translating the French words and phrases sprinkled through the text. Short passages from Lafayette’s letters and other writings appear in small, scroll-like boxes on some double-page spreads. Kozjan’s illustrations, lively ink drawings digitally enhanced with color and subtle shading, will engage readers, as they bring the period settings to life. This oversize, handsome package will introduce a little-known aspect of the Revolutionary War history through pithy words and often dramatic pictures. It respects its audience as well as the historically significant friendship it portrays. Grades 2-5. --Carolyn Phelan

This book covers the relationship between Washington and Le Marquis de Lafayette. It mostly focuses on Lafayette rather then Washington. It is not for the younger crowd. They use a lot of french expressions and the text is fairly long. I guess it is not what I expected.

It was a beautiful little book to get a child interested in our nation's rich history. My granddaughter loved it! It is simple enough for younger children but in a short book with great illustrations, there is a lot to get the little wheels turning.

Book was in excellent like new condition and my niece and nephew enjoyed reading it.

The story of the reserved George Washington's initially reluctant friendship with the young French officer whose heart "enlisted" in the American struggle for independence from Britain, is told in a spare, sprightly narrative interspersed with French words and phrases (C'est le moment! Magnifique!). The storyline focuses narrowly on the year 1777 beginning with the events leading up to the first meeting of the two and ending (somewhat abruptly) with Washington's visit to Lafayette at the house where he was recovering from a wound suffered at the Battle of Brandywine. But the wider historical picture is there as well: Sidebar "scrolls" contain quotes from Lafayette's documents and the backmatter, a treasure trove for teachers, includes the continuation of their relationship until the death of Washington, timelines, places to visit, a bibliography, a glossary of French phrases used in the text, and reproductions of two portraits currently hanging in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives. The color-on-pen-and-ink illustrations, many of them sweeping two-page spreads, capture both the human warmth and the dramatic historical sweep of the story. This book is lively enough to be simply read aloud and sturdy enough to be used as the basis for a U.S. history unit.

First, a disclaimer--I assisted the author, in a very small way, by analyzing and critiquing some of the illustrations for this book. That being said, I can still give my honest opinion, that this is a beautifully done book. The illustrations are very attractive and the book itself contains a wealth of information for young readers. There are not enough lively, engaging works on history for this age group, so I am always thrilled to see another entry in the field.

This is a wonderful book. The Marquis de Lafayette has been my 7 year old's hero for 3 years now. After a trip to Brandywine & Valley Forge, I'm a fan now too. I knew very little about Lafayette until my son had such an interest in the American Revolution that I had to learn more. I'm glad we did because the Marquis has a great story.

I used to live in Washington D.C., and I'd pass Lafayette Square all the time. How did I never make the connection between the two?Thank you, Ms. Castrovilla, for writing a fun and engaging children's book that sheds light on two of the most important statesmen of the 18th century, both of whom had profound effects on how our nation was built.

Great story and illustrations. Good timeline and references in the back.

To be honest, when I first got this book I was both overwhelmed and a bit disappointed. My first reaction was "there is too much to read, I just want a book that quickly states what I should eat for what I want to heal." I put the book away for a couple days--but then I started looking through it and actually reading it! My attitude immediately changed. While this book has a lot of pages and looks more scholarly than I was hoping for--the author has written it in a way that is easily understandable, interesting, and most important helpful! I felt embarrassed that my first response to the book was that it had too many pages and that I didn't want to read so much.I did find the pages that list the foods that should be eaten depending on which of the five defense systems you are interested in. They are in charts near the back of the book in Appendix A. The five systems are: Angiogenesis (blood vessels and circulation), Regeneration (stem cells), Microbiome (healthy bacteria), DNA Protection (I didn't know this was even possible), and Immunity. The chapters for each of these areas goes in depth explaining why. I actually found this information very interesting when I actually started reading it!The book is divided into three main parts. Part One explains each of the body's natural defense systems. Part Two is on what to eat to beat disease. Part Three is on planning, choosing, and acting. It includes topics such as the 5 x 5 x 5 framework the author has created that makes it easy to incorporate these foods. It also has a chapter on "Exceptional Foods" and "Sample Meal Guide and Recipes."If you are looking for information on what to eat to help our body's natural defense system this book should be one of the top ones you consider!

Although the book does explain how angiogenesis works, and how the microbiome is very important to overall health, the gist of the book is to eat more vegetables, fruits, and fermented foods. He recommends to do this 5 times daily and your body will have the tools it needs to repair itself. What if you cannot eat fermented foods? I have a dairy allergy AND a mold allergy, so that leaves me out for healing my SIBO (bacterial overgrowth), which he does not even mention. Nor can I cure my food allergies, my thyroid or my insulin resistance. I cannot drink wine without getting a headache, same with chocolate. And a zillion books on Amazon state to eat a more plant-based diet, less sugar and less meat. To quote him, “There is a way to boost our own defense systems so the body will heal itself”, yet he also says “There is no silver bullet for any one disease”.I started with the Nourishing Traditions book over 20 years ago so none of the advice was new to me. I did find the angiogenesis section interesting, but he says if you are on a Paleo diet or a Keto diet, just include more healthy foods from the list which is mostly plant-based.

There are a large number of diet books around, espousing a variety of “healthy” lifestyles, and often these are unsustainable over the long term either for financial or health reasons. Many look at such factors as calories, fat, carbohydrates and more without really considering the foods themselves beyond that. This book isn’t a diet book, per se; instead, it looks at the individual foods and explains how the body uses them to heal and regenerate itself. To cut to the chase on one important point: the focus is very much on natural, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts and fish. There is a definite lack of coverage for land-based meats (beef, pork, lamb) though there is discussion of various types of seafood such as tuna, anchovies, clams and more, and chicken/turkey are also covered. This is not a formal diet book; rather, it is more of a field guide to foods that help your body in several key areas: angiogenesis, regeneration, microbiome, DNA protection and immunity. Each of these get a dedicated chapter on what they are, how tending to them is important and how you can give your body the tools it needs to fight off diseases and heal itself. At the end of the book there is a set of large tables, one for each of these aspects of your health, and the author advises to eat at least one serving of something from each table every day. Interestingly, the book does not advocate eating only things on the lists, but instead says to make sure that these are added to the regular diet. Some of the material regarding specific foods I have seen before, such as the antioxidant properties of certain fruits, good fat content of others and so on, but much of what is here is new to me. What this book does is consolidate a lot of information into one handy reference. I did not know what fiddleheads were until I found out about them in this book, after which I was able to get corroborating information online.I am still working my way through this book and I am learning a lot as I go, but so far I have been very encouraged with what I have seen and read. This is a different approach to health, not focused on weight management and counting calories, but instead focusing on how your body uses different foods to heal, rebuild and defend itself.

Most books you read about health list everything you have to avoid to get healthy. This book is the complete opposite. This book will tell you all the foods you need to eat to feel better and heal if you are sick. The layout makes this book very easy to read. You do not have to read it from start to finish. But it is helpful. I love the sample meal guide and recipes. This book is a wonderful tool in getting your health back. Highly recommended.

Our review in short. For anyone expecting the insider jokes, biting wit and charm that is Wendy W. in person, and on her talk show, unfortunately this book is NOT a reflection of any of that.I planned to give this as a gift to a friend who really likes WW, but the book was so awful and so poorly written, that i threw it out. -I guess it was kind of a collection or reprint of stories she has already discussed, but the book is illegible. And I got this book on sale for less-than a $1dollar and that was still way, way too much. Now, i'm pretty sure that at the time this book was published W. W. could afford to have one of her staff writers help with the organization and overall content of the book, as obviously the editors at publishing simply didn't care enough to bother, but I guess she didn't either... So straight to the trash it went! -Meh.Overall this book is so bad it makes those old cheap grocery tabloids look like fine reading.Don't waste your time or money on this awful, awful book. Our grade: F-!, or (less than) ZEROStars!

If you're a fan of Wendy and her show, then you knew that this book was coming and you knew what it was going to be about. Chock full of "gossip," Ms. Williams does a great job of putting her radio show to print. Readers will be pleased to know that all of Wendy's favorite topics are covered; from Baby Momma Drama to "How You Doin'?....." Some of Wendy's most controversial interviews are covered in the book, but I found the most interesting to be the one with Misa Hylton-Brim--Puffy's first "baby momma."I liked the book and it was certainly a quick read, but solid Wendy fans like myself may be somewhat disappointed; you will find most if not all of what is covered within the pages to be regurgitated information. BUT--if you missed the MHB interview, you'll find it here. If you missed World's perspective on homosexuality and the music industry, you'll also find that here. And if you are one of the few remaining people on earth who did NOT hear that ridiculously raw Whitney Houston interview, all is not lost---Wendy has included it here also.Looking forward to the next book, Wendy (will there be one?)...; but PLEASE reserve some of your future juicy gossip just for the book. That way your regular fans will get some new "scandalosity" between its pages also.DYB

Waste of money. I purchased three of her books. Not impressed, and I actually like her, and watch her show. She is somewhat full of herself, and puts on airs, the coy smile, the fakeness, but I find her intriguing. Can you believe his woman is worth 6 million dollars??? What a hustler, you got to give her respect for that!

I love Wendy Williams but this book is so self-serving I vouldnt even get through it. Don't waste your money.

I've never listened to this woman's show, so was unfamiliar with it. The first part of the book is a lot about people I don't know since I'm not in the 'scene' and familiar with a lot of current artist/music. However, I did agree a lot with some of her interviews and her advice and what seemed to be a solid morale fiber.

Bought this for my daughter

I love Wendy I enjoy her show. She is a kind woman. I respect that in a show host . SheIs a great entertainer.

Really interesting.
