Erik and Emily Orton and their 5 children, ages 6-16 (one with Downs Syndrome) have made a spur-of-the-moment decision to chuck work and life in New York and journey to the Caribbean. There, they obtain a sailboat and begin their one-year exploration of a new life adventure.The story takes the reader through all the trials of living together in tight quarters; learning to navigate the waters; and learning all the ins-and-outs of sailing itself. There are good time and not so good times. However, it is a life lesson for all.At first, I was a bit bored with all of the sailing terminology that didn't interest me at all. However, it got a bit better because my husband and I have taking cruises to the Caribbean and have even rented a sailboat and crew for a week to sail to different Caribbean islands. Glorious adventures!I can also understand the frustrations and the victories they faced. Dropping everything and taking on a whole new life is quite a challenge. My family and I did that twice when we all moved to Paris where my husband had been offered a job with NATO for a few years. For us, it was moving to a whole new country and learning a whole new language. There were huge challenges but also lots of wonderful memories. I’m sure the Orton family will all grow from this experience. It proves to us that we can do something different. It’s good to take us away from what we know and experience new things. Good for them.If you life to think what it would be like to take on a totally different life, do give this book a read. You might find that you are braver than you think. I thoroughly enjoyed traveling along with the Ortons on their family adventure! Erik, Emily and their five children decide to learn to sail and this leads eventually to the purchase of a catamaran they rename Fezywig and a 5,000 mile adventure lasting nearly a year. Not every couple, let alone a family this size, could stand so much closeness; this family not only survives intact but grows through the shared experience and trials and joys along the way. The reader is treated to the whole experience, both the highs and lows. The Ortons travel to some amazing places, but also get stuck waiting on boat repairs and weather and have to rethink their plans and expectations. Through this process, they all learn to slow down and take life as it comes. There is no sugarcoating here. Life on a boat can be dangerous, but without risk, there is no reward. Living the life of a cruiser is not for everyone, but this family inspires with their willingness to break out of the mold and try on a new lifestyle.Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

I LOVED IT! Absolutely loved it. Ahoy! Erik and Emily Orton engagingly narrate the exploits of their family as they disrupt their conventional New York City life for an adventure at sea, unfazed by the challenges of five children, one with special needs. They can’t imagine everything that might go wrong, but it will anyway. They won’t persuade you to spend a year on a boat—at least, they didn’t persuade me—but they will seduce you into imagining boldly and envisioning setting sail on an adventure of your own. They will persuade you that ‘unconventional’ is a synonym for ‘individual’ and have you contemplating why you would accept an off-the-rack version of your life, when you can tailor-make your one. You’ll finish Seven at Sea daring to seek a discovery-driven voyage to your dream life, or the dream-of-a-lifetime. A fun, inspiring read.

If you are looking for a "how to cruise" book, this wouldn't be your first choice. However, If you want an honest look at a family taking on challenges together, and experiencing their ups and downs as they discover what life is like on a cruising sailboat, then this is a very good book.Life on a sailboat can be very rewarding, but those rewards can be hard won. Life in general is the same, and the Ortons take the risks to get those rewards. They are inspirational in a real way.An enjoyable read whether you have any intention òf living on a boat or not.

This book is so great! The voice of both of the authors, Erik and Emily Orton, were both amazing. I loved the way they both talk, giving the story of their family and adventures a complete feeling.The authors start this one out before they’ve even learned how to sail a boat. I loved the way that gives the reader the full story of what they did and why. The reader gets to follow these two and their family as they learn to sail, figure out what kind of boat they want, and deal with their adventures and misadventures at sea.This book includes maps and pictures. This gives the reader a way to form images in their mind. I loved being able to see where each of the sections took place and relate all of those things to the story.This one’s non-fiction. I can’t say I’ve ever wanted to live with our three kids on a boat on the ocean. But reading this book made me see that there can be so much more to life for a family then being in one central location. It’s something to think about!

Emily and Erik give you a front seat to a journey of love, life lessons and gratitude. Super fast read that is extremely well written.Thank you for sharing.

What a wonderful introduction to subtle energies in the healing arts. Highly recommended to anyone in the healing industry.

This is one of those exceptional books about energy and energy healing that comes along only once every ten years.Henderson's book explains all the ways you can feel and interpret eight types of subtle energy in the body from the most basic experience of 'a tingling feeling in your body' through to the colors and symbols you sometimes see when you are deep in your practice.In particular I liked the sections on sexual energy and the different emotional energies which are missing in most books about energy. It was fascinating to read about the colors and temperatures of the emotions and the help Robert gives in interpreting the colors and symbols I often intuit in my own healing practice.It was also great to learn about the effects that energy from other people in your life can have on your body. I had no idea how much of other people's stuff we carry in our body and where in our body we store it.The last part of the book is a series of maps of the body which detail thirty specific physical conditions, like tight hamstrings, hips and shoulders and explains the underlying energetic cause for each one and offers practical advice on how best to release each condition. There is so much information in this book!This book is suitable for both beginners and experienced bodyworkers and energy healers. If you like books by Barbara Brennan, Louise Hay or Carolyn Myss then you will enjoy this book too.

Although there are many books about energy healing nowadays, rarely have I seen a book that describes the different forms of subtle energies so detailed and at the same time provides you with the practical understanding of how these energies shape our challenges and blessings, our pains and opportunities, our blocks and potentials. It is interesting for anyone wanting to get to know themselves at a deeper level, but especially so for massage therapists and yoga teachers, who can use it to understand and support healing in their practice. Perhaps the central theme of the book is energy blocks, and the eight types of energy involved; with in depth information about the role of emotional, sexual and spiritual energy.What I liked particularly, is that this books asks you questions. You are being asked to reflect on what type(s) of energy you are drawn to working with yourself. It makes you reflect on your own energy blocks and the fact that by releasing those, you become ready to release those in everybody you treat. Highly recommended.

Ammerman's overview of the "battles" that erupted in the Southern Baptist Convention is a sociological study with a secondary mix of history and theology.She opens with the experience of being at the pivotal convention meeting of June 1985 when Charles Stanley was elected president. From there she gives a brief Baptist history, outlining the theology and organizational philosophy that began the Baptist movement in North America. Then she covers the ways in which different groups began to develop within the same theological and organizational worldview. Put simply, the "Fundamentalists" stressed the historical Baptist emphasis on biblical authority and faithfulness to the Bible as the "inerrant" word of God, while "moderates" emphasized the Baptist traditions of the priesthood of all believers and freedom of conscience. From there, the second half of the book details how each wing within the Southern Baptist Convention began to strategically fight for position in the denominational structures. The "fundamentalist" wing ending up developing a more effective strategy for gaining the right positions of authority to enforce their values while the "moderates" who initially held more of the key positions ended up losing many of them. The result was a political war that polarized the denomination and eventually led to factions and splits.Ammerman takes a sociological approach to the historical events. She reports on the history but spends a good deal of time on detailed surveys conducted within the denomination at the time and points out where the disagreements existed in perception and reality. Many figures and tables breakdown the Southern Baptist membership in terms of geography, views on social topics, self-identification as "fundamentalist" or "moderate" or something else, etc. Three appendices give her methods of study, the methods of organizing data, and even the questionnaires themselves.If you are looking for pure history of events, dates and quotes, this might not be the right book for you. But if you are interested in how different factions formed within the largest Protestant denomination in the United States and the resulting "battles" that erupted from a common tradition, then this is your book.

This is an excellent history of the Southern Baptist Church. I could not put the book down. If you know nothing of the background of the SBC this is an excellent resource.

Nancy Tatom Ammerman, a major sociologist of religion, wife of a Baptist minister, and herself a Baptist who was once part of the SBC but is no longer, conducted this fine sociological study of the SBC. It is very rare that sociologists or historians get to see a church schism while it is taking place, but Ammerman and her research assistants were able to do just that in the mid-'80s. Ammerman gives us insider insights and uses her outsider researchers and sociological tools (including a scientific survey) to achieve balanced objectivity. Her last chapter, as she admits, is somewhat less objective because she is emotionally invested in the survival of what was then called the Southern Baptist Alliance. Now called the Alliance of Baptists, it is one of several small splinters from the ever-more-fundamentalist Southern Baptist behemoth. Anyone wanting to understand how Southern Baptists, who in 1976 were typified by someone like Jimmy Carter, could become the far-right religious/political powerhouse of today should read this book.

Klaus Mühlhahn is Professor of Chinese History and Culture and Vice President at the Free University of Berlin. His Criminal Justice in China: A History won the John K. But if you are a LinkedIn beginner, or want to be sure you are getting a thorough introduction to the biggest networking tool ever, this book is a good place to start.You will know enough after reading this to help yourself find contacts and network like a pro, and you'll even be able to help your social media resistant friends get on LinkedIn.What I liked most about this book:1) The monthly action plan laid out at the end, complete with weekly tasks. Its well laid out enough that you could almost just type it into your Outlook or tasks calendar.2) That the author starts with the most important part of a profile, describes how it works and how to set yours up, and then gives you a couple of things to do. I have completed most of the to dos suggested throughout the book. It was painless, and possibly even a little bit fun. And I hate networking.So why no five stars? Honestly, the five stars are meant for books we "love," and though this was good enough to get me to use LinkedIn with confidence, I did not love the book. Did I mention I hate networking? I like this book as much as possible, considering its about a subject that I would like to ignore.

This is a fast paced, yet very complete book full of practical ways to use all the key features of LinkedIn. Newbies can learn how to dive in, while power users an pick up on areas they can take better advantage of.

Good Read

I recently attended a seminar that Wayne was one of the speakers at. Conveniently just before that I had logged onto LinkedIn for the first time. I honestly thought when he talked about his book he was another snake oil salesman just out to make a buck. I was wrong. He told us that he designed the book to be read on a flight to Dallas. I didn't take the flight but I was able to read the book in just over two days, with three kids in the house that is an accomplishment. The short read doesn't mean the book is lacking in content at all. In fact you could liken it to making juice from concentrate; it's all in there ready for you and not watered down. Each chapter I found myself going back to my profile and updating it with something new. I can't speak to the full pay out of the book yet as I just finished it ten minutes ago, but I can speak to the potential. By following the steps and leveraging the contacts you already have this will become an invaluable tool for anyone. I look forward to the weekly updates from Wayne and I look forward to the new contacts to my network the steps in this book will add. And I know those contacts will lead to new business for me in the future. My best advice for anyone who buys this book would be to lock yourself in your office for a couple days to read the book, take notes, dog ear some pages and keep your profile up so you can update it section by section as you go.
