Initially apprehensive to read a "relationships" book, I decided to go ahead and read it due to a recently ended relationship and the assurance that this book is deeply rooted in science. And I am so glad that I read this book, principally for the succinct summary of hundreds of academic studies on psychology, relationships, divorce, attachment theory, and happiness.Seeing that each conclusion the author posits is based not just one or two, but many repeatable academic studies is very reassuring. I felt like I was able to much better understand myself as a human being, particularly the biology of attraction and the fundamental changes in relationships over the last 200 years due to increased life expectancy and societal shifts.There are parts of the book where I felt like the author was coaching me on how to make better dating decisions, which is fine, but felt a bit odd as much of the focus on the book was presenting science rather than relationship coaching. I think Dr. Tashiro probably just couldn't help himself, and I don't fault him for doing it. When I obliged to do the tests presented in the book, I went to the noted website to complete them and found the website to be incomplete and not have the test results represented in the book.At times the conclusions were a bit muddled; I thought the discussion on attachment theory was interesting but lacking in finality. After spending a couple hours researching attachment theory online, it makes sense now that the conclusions were weak because there don't seem to be strong correlations between long-term relationship success and attachment type among adults."The Science of Happily Ever After" has many virtues and the survey of such a massive amount of research is really worth reading, and it is made better by the weave of interesting personal stories that illustrate the science in action. In the end, I give the book 5/5 stars despite its few shortcomings. I highly recommend this book.

In this very entertainingly written book, TyTashiro comes up with plenty of evidence to show that it's the criteria we use for choosing our partners that lead us astray into passing over people who might be ideal for us or into relationships that fail sooner rather than later.The incredibly high divorce rate is ample proof that most of us are doing something wrong when choosing our partners and the book kicks off with a reasoned explanation of why the criteria we use are not relevant to the levels of relationship satisfaction we experience and how long those relationships last.The book rang plenty of bells for me but the loudest was that many of us are also using too many criteria when choosing our partners which can often cut down the pool of possibles to a very few or even none. Ty reckons you've pretty well only got three wishes before you've cut down the number of possibles to the extent that you'll have to be very lucky indeed to stumble across one of them.With the thought that you've only got three wishes, it makes perfect sense not to waste any of them on irrelevancies and Ty suggests traits that you should really be looking for in your partner (Hint: they don't include looks or money). A very important one is your prospective partner's attachment style. Put very simply, an attachment style is how that person will react when things go a bit pear-shaped in your world and you go to them seeking comfort and reassurance. People normally echo the attachment style shown to them by their primary caregivers in childhood and Ty reveals how to determine if your prospective partner's attachment style makes them a good long-term prospect or not.Finding a person with the traits Ty suggests is very much easier than, for example, finding someone who looks like Cameron Diaz and whose father owns a brewery. Happiness and love are the ultimate goals of most of us and the framework provided by Ty seems to me to be a very good start in thinking about and planning how to achieve that state.

It is a well written book that I have now bought more copies of to give to single family members. I have heard Dr. Agronin on the national stage share his hopeful messages about aging. In "The End of Old Age" he goes a step farther and proposes that aging brings strengths and should not be dreaded but embraced. He centers his argument on aging bringing wisdom, survival allowing us to realize a purpose and thriving having the potential of creating something new. Dr. Agronin's vast experience with an aging population and his obvious admiration and affection for older people he has known informs his message and writing, and supports his position as a leading expert and geriatric psychiatrist.

A book that should be read by ALL ages - if my mother was still with us, it's one we'd read together & discuss. A terrific balance of Dr. Agronin's professional experiences & insights, shared in a personal way, along with anecdotes providing hooks on which to relate our own experiences. Unlike the medical community's current lack of wording around positive constructive expansive aging, Dr. Agronin's brings us wondrous strings of descriptive words that resonate in our senses ~while-~ introducing new phrasing terms acronyms. Three-quarters his experiences & stories, one-fourth practical tips & tools for creating action plans to help experience facilitate support aging expansively, the book is accessible to people already familiar with Gene Cohen & Ezekiel Emanuel ~and~ those new to the idea that adventures await us far beyond middle age, that aging significantly upward can open unimagined doors, that surprising treasures can be found in decline & debility, even in dementia. My only bone to pick with Dr. Agronin is that his eyes- & heart-opening book is about embracing experiencing CELEBRATING - not the end of - old age!

For anyone who is a serious student of gerontology, avoid this book. It is full of generalizations, applies overly simplified concepts, and the author uses the minimum possible content to fill up pages including 3 blank pages to start new sections. A very disappointing read. An infantile treatment of an important subject.

I can't remember when I have been so disappointed in a book. Yes, Dr. Agronin is compassionate. However, repeatedly reminding us of the current attitudes towards ageing is not helpful. It weakens his suggestions for alternative attitudes. His writing is graceful, but he didn't state the purpose of his book until page 8. To relate a story and then point out that life is about change, and continue on in the same manner, made me wish I could return the book. I don't even want to donate it to my library. There are far more useful, insightful ways of spending one's hours than attempting to read this book to the final page.

Were I to teach a course on brain health, aging, or brain fitness, I definitely would include Marc E. Agronin's engaging, thought-provoking, and well-written recent (2018) book The End of Old Age: Living a Longer, More Purposeful Life.He asks three fundamental questions - Why age? (to grow in wisdom). Why survive? (to realize a purpose). Why thrive? (to create something new.) Â He argues persuasively that aging can and should be seen not as a disease but as a life enhancing opportunity for developing strengths of wisdom, purpose, and creativity. His arguments are well supported both by germane case studies and by detailed chapter end notes. The author makes wonderful and creative use of metaphor and clever turns of phrase, provides useful chapter summaries and even gives the reader an action plan for redefining and "re-aging." This book definitely deserves careful reading and heeding by readers interested in a balanced, refreshing positive perspective about aging.

The author tells of the courage of the people he sees growing older, their abilities to deal with the realities of aging, and the faith these people have in themselves and others. He has helped me see that retirement is really the independence to develop and grow into the person I aspire to be. A worthy read.

This book makes me feel very positive about aging! The author sounds very experienced and provides excellent real life examples.

Summer reading projectBy: Gianni LeonardoTravel teamBook review This book is about a young basketball player named Danny Walker. He tries hard to get on the basketball team. Danny usually makes the team, until this year, When he didn't make the team, he felt confused. He later found out that he didn't make the team because he was too small. Danny's dad decides to make a team for him. Danny's dad used to play basketball until he got in a car crash. They then won a couple of games and eventually made playoffs. Danny's dad then gets in another car crash. After that, the best player, who breaks his wrist later on, joins the Middletown Vikings. I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially if you love basketball. The book is very suspenseful. Every chapter has its own problem to be solved. The characters are very relate able, which makes the book even better. Once you pick the book up, you can't put it down. The theme of this book, is not to give up. Even though Danny was cut from his team, he still kept going. And believed in himself and kept his head up high and didn’t doubt himself. Even through the darkest times, Danny still has hope for his team. I think if you play basketball or any sport in general and you are having trouble of making the team this book will show you to not have doubt, to be confident and keep trying. Hopefully this will show you a little bit about the book . You can learn from Danny’s experiences from his problems. !

I ordered Travel Team and Hero by the same author Mike Lupica mainly for the book Hero which I had seen in a store and Travel Team because while researching Hero on Amazon.com it had good reviews. When they arrived luckily I picked up Travel Team and read it first. I thought it was a great young adult fiction book. I loved the characters and the story and was disappointed when it ended it left me wanting more and there were unaswered questions. After finishing the book I went back to Amzon.com and discovered thre was a second book Summer Ball which I am now reading. After finishing Travel Team I read Hero, a big disappointment. Thank goodness I didn't read it first. For suspense the main character keeps going back and forth asking "Uncle John" and Mr. Edmond questions about his father and his death and they keep giving him cryptic vague double-speak answers that I guess is suspose to be suspenseful. Do people really answer questions that way with vague nonsenesical answers. Also for a book with the title Hero there is very little action. Read Travel Team and skip Hero

BEWARE...FOUL LANGUAGE!In Chapter 2, Page 16 has “GD”...and I know “hell” is in there pretty early also.Had I read the reviews prior to purchasing, I would have NEVER let my basketball loving child read this.There should be a WARNING about the language, especially while being marketed to 10 year old and up.Thankfully, my daughter knew to tell me...she is my basketball lover.I will NOT buy anything else written by this pathetic author.

Gift for grandson. Hope he enjoys

Mike Lupica books are just perfect for boys that are really into sports. I would say that boys from 5th-grade-9th grade will just love them. I'd borrow from the library first and see if the child likes these books. Some boys are into 39 Clues or intense mysteries.

One of my special children was reading this book for a book report. It is written for young teens that like basketball. I gave it four stars because that is what my student would give it.

I bought this book for my grandson he is a sports fanatic, even though the book is not in his wheel house (he is a golfer and baseball player) the ethics in the book are what I hope he imbibes in his other areas of interest. I read the book cover to cover and really enjoyed it.

I play this every week for my class as they read the novel together. This audio set really helps them absorb the information clearly with expressive tone of voice! It's so much better than having them read at different speeds or listening to me read all day.

Mick Goodrick is a very knowledgeable guitarist. His "Advancing Guitarist" book is absolutely excellent, so I expect this one will be also. There are some issues you need to be aware of, however. First, he makes no use of tablature or chord diagrams at all. Standard notation only. Except that there are also many examples of 'non-standard' notation. For example, throughout the book he uses stemless quarter notes to illustrate his concepts. No problem, I get that. But when I see one bar containing six of them with a time signature of 4/4, I'm a little confused. And later on, he provides examples using standard notes and timing indicators, but no time signature at all. I think I know what he means, but then again, I've been studying theory for over forty years. Some explanatory notes might be a good idea. A novice may not be able to figure out what he is doing. Second, if have have a very solid understanding of basic jazz harmony studies, including seventh chords and their related scales and modes, you will be able to handle this book. Otherwise, you won't since no help is given about these things. Third, what is discussed here, and exemplified on the recordings, is for advanced, non-standard, improvising. If you are looking for info on how to do traditional soloing over standard changes, this book is definitely not for you. The info given here is for the musician who is looking for those 'way-out' ways of voicing chords and creating solo material. If this is you, you've hit the jackpot. Fourth, while I haven't listened to the CD at high volume, the mix of the bass on those tracks provided as 'accompaniment' for you to experiment is barely audible on the small player I use for practice. So, with all these things in mind, I still give this four stars. After I've played with this book awhile, I may be inclined to add one more.

This book is 95 pages of a vision that unifies harmony, melody and compositional texture in sounds that I couldn't believe existed in my guitar. In 5 chapters of discussion, etudes, arpeggio explorations, "compressed modal" explorations and a rich section on implications and applications of the material, Mick Goodrick has presented an entirely new attitude that makes perfect sense yet unlocks doorways into beautiful sounds completely missed in the harmonic perspective up to this point. In his previous books, Goodrick has consistently tackled and expanded the boundries of guitar as an improvisational and compositional instrument. He can arguably be called the granddaddy of modern jazz guitar having passed his knowledge on to the who's who of contemporary creative jazz guitar. His books have been exhaustive, uncannily insightful yet challenging in their open ended possibilities. This book may be the most approachable edition to date, with usable examples on chord progressions that demonstrate the utility of the concept and the power of the approach. One note of note: The book is written in standard notation. There IS a CD with examples played by the co-author and notable guitarist in his own right Tim Miller, but fluency in reading and triad voicings will be most helpful. If you are beyond the hand holding foundational material stage, this is a truly rewarding work. If you are searching for ways to expand your creative base and craving totally new colours to use in any situation, this book could very well be the new currency standard.I'm going to be busy for a very long time.

Great book. Like all of Goodrick's books - and Van Eps's books as well - this one requires the musician to figure it out. Essentially, it discards the common chord voicings in favor of a chord-scale approach to harmony. If I had one wish for this book it would be that the etudes were written to more than just the "Stella By Starlight" changes, but I do appreciate that the real work is mine. The recorded etudes are killer takes on the tune, though.

All you could ever really want to know about advanced harmonic usage on the guitar! A diligent student could use the material in this one book to develop exercises for years of study and practice! Truly one of the must haves along with the Bert Ligon and Randy Vincent books!

This book is for edumacateded, literate guitar players, unlike myself. Content looks great, but I have a bit of a challenge here, haha.

This is an amazing book for serious guitar players. If you are already working on Chord scales in major, melodic minor as well as harmonic minor, this book gives some amazing concepts and voicing concepts that bring a whole new aspect to guitar players that are looking to expand their tonal palette.

excellent book, I'll work hard with it

I hate to say this because I really liked the Advancing Guitarist and I personally think Mick is a great guy and and good teacher, having taken a few very inspiring lessons in the early '70s with him but I can't seem to get much out of these later books.I also bought Almanac of Guitar Voice Leading and Factorial Rhythm which I also found to be endless charts of all possible permutations of a few ideas. Maybe I am too thick to get it but I will take another look at these books in the future and see if I can fathom them.

The first thing I did after purchase was to try and look up a recipe using the index as a guide. Recipes were listed by protein and by page number.This is where the wheels come off the rails, because NONE of the pages have page numbers! Think about that for a minute.

I found this to be a terrible book. Like listed in other reviews the page# thing is weird. The paper feels like cheapest possible. No pictures. Very random recipes. Just not happy with it. Received it today, already ordered a different one. Only giving it 1star but only because I have too.

There are no page numbers so the index is useless. Very disappointed.

The other reviewers are correct about the lack of page numbering. I suppose on Kindle it doesn't make as much of a problem. Still, it's a simple fix that should be taken care of.All the beef recipes are verbatim from another book. That includes the ridiculous "German" recipe with Serrano chile powder and fajita seasoning. Rrriiiggghhhtttt. Deutchlanders mit fajita gehaben.Since the beef recipes are from another book, I'd be willing to wager the poultry recipes and pork recipes are as well.

Basically the same recipes over and over. And just dry rubs

Elias, Ph.D. is Professor, Psychology Department, Rutgers University, Director of the Rutgers Social-Emotional Learning Lab, and Academic Director of The Collaborative Center for Community-Based Research and Service at Rutgers. He is Past President of the Society for Community Research and Action/Division of Community Psychology (27) of APA and has received the SCRA Distinguished Contribution to Practice and Ethnic Minority Mentoring Awards, as well the Joseph E. Zins Memorial Senior Scholar Award for Social-Emotional Learning from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the John P. McGovern Medal from the American School Health Association, and the Sanford McDonnell Award for Lifetime Achievement in Character Education. Prof. Elias lectures nationally and internationally to educators and parents about students’ emotional intelligence, school success, and social-emotional and character development. Among Dr. Elias’ numerous books are ASCD’s Promoting Social and Emotional Learning: Guidelines for Educators, the Social Decision Making/Social Problem Solving curricula for grades k-8, the new e-book, Emotionally Intelligent Parenting, and a book for young children: Talking Treasure: Stories to Help Build Emotional Intelligence and Resilience in Young Children (www.researchpress.com, 2012). He also writes a blog for on SEL-related topics for the George Lucas Educational Foundation at www.edutopia.org. With colleagues at the College of St. Elizabeth, he has developed an online credentialing program for Direct Instruction of Social-Emotional and Character Development (SECD) programs in classroom, small group, and after school settings (sel.rutgers.edu), and for School-Focused Leadership and Coordination of SECD and School Culture and Climate (SELinSchools.org).
