Review

"Dr. Agronin is not only a gifted writer and clinician, but also a keen observer of human behavior, whose empathy for his patients goes a long way to break down the ageism that separates the generations."--Gary Small, MD, UCLA Professor of Psychiatry and Aging, and bestselling author of The Memory Bible"The End of Old Age isn't a sugar-coated depiction of growing old. In fact, several of Agronin's patients described in the book suffered debilitating illnesses. Yet many improved once they found a sense of purpose, discarded ingrained beliefs that their days of growth and learning were over or opened their minds to trying new treatments or approaches to life...In The End of Old Age, Agronin offers an action plan to examine our own resilience and wisdom to guide an aging person out of the 'stagnant quo' or age better, even in a challenging situation."―A Place for Mom"Offers a hopeful view of aging that will resonate with those in the field...It's also a good book for those who might be feeling burned out working with this population. Agronin's compassion and appreciation for elders will leave readers with renewed enthusiasm for their profession."―McKnight's"Inspired and inspiring...Decades of caring for the aged have taught [Dr. Agronin] that it is possible to maintain purpose and meaning in life even in the face of significant disease and disability, impaired mental and physical functioning and limited participation in activities."―Jane Brody, New York Times"This book should be on the desk of every geriatric specialist, senior living facility staff member, and senior citizen caretaker. Most senior citizens will also benefit from its wisdom, compassion, and sensible guidelines for successful living at an advanced age...Dr. Agronin's book is nothing less than a manual for moving beyond the negative connotations of aging."―Florida Weekly"A guide to growing old with as much grace and vigor as possible...An interesting book that will help older people and those who love them."―Seven Ponds blog"Most people are quite familiar with the ravages of aging. This book presents a different message, embracing a positive, integrated perspective that considers the myriad gains in strengths and experiences that aging provides."―Choice Magazine"The book offers practical advice, interesting narratives, and a sound perspective on how to change one's viewpoint from drudgery to exploring older adult's wealth of knowledge and experience in a positive manner."―Portland Book Review"[A] groundbreaking volume...It's definitely unusual to come across an author who wishes that the adjective 'old' could be viewed as a badge of honor or distinction...This inspiring book is nothing less than a blueprint designed to help all of us age better by accepting and celebrating the aging process."―Creators Syndicate

I have heard Dr. Agronin on the national stage share his hopeful messages about aging. In "The End of Old Age" he goes a step farther and proposes that aging brings strengths and should not be dreaded but embraced. He centers his argument on aging bringing wisdom, survival allowing us to realize a purpose and thriving having the potential of creating something new. Dr. Agronin's vast experience with an aging population and his obvious admiration and affection for older people he has known informs his message and writing, and supports his position as a leading expert and geriatric psychiatrist.

A book that should be read by ALL ages - if my mother was still with us, it's one we'd read together & discuss. A terrific balance of Dr. Agronin's professional experiences & insights, shared in a personal way, along with anecdotes providing hooks on which to relate our own experiences. Unlike the medical community's current lack of wording around positive constructive expansive aging, Dr. Agronin's brings us wondrous strings of descriptive words that resonate in our senses ~while-~ introducing new phrasing terms acronyms. Three-quarters his experiences & stories, one-fourth practical tips & tools for creating action plans to help experience facilitate support aging expansively, the book is accessible to people already familiar with Gene Cohen & Ezekiel Emanuel ~and~ those new to the idea that adventures await us far beyond middle age, that aging significantly upward can open unimagined doors, that surprising treasures can be found in decline & debility, even in dementia. My only bone to pick with Dr. Agronin is that his eyes- & heart-opening book is about embracing experiencing CELEBRATING - not the end of - old age!

For anyone who is a serious student of gerontology, avoid this book. It is full of generalizations, applies overly simplified concepts, and the author uses the minimum possible content to fill up pages including 3 blank pages to start new sections. A very disappointing read. An infantile treatment of an important subject.

I can't remember when I have been so disappointed in a book. Yes, Dr. Agronin is compassionate. However, repeatedly reminding us of the current attitudes towards ageing is not helpful. It weakens his suggestions for alternative attitudes. His writing is graceful, but he didn't state the purpose of his book until page 8. To relate a story and then point out that life is about change, and continue on in the same manner, made me wish I could return the book. I don't even want to donate it to my library. There are far more useful, insightful ways of spending one's hours than attempting to read this book to the final page.

Were I to teach a course on brain health, aging, or brain fitness, I definitely would include Marc E. Agronin's engaging, thought-provoking, and well-written recent (2018) book The End of Old Age: Living a Longer, More Purposeful Life.He asks three fundamental questions - Why age? (to grow in wisdom). Why survive? (to realize a purpose). Why thrive? (to create something new.) Â He argues persuasively that aging can and should be seen not as a disease but as a life enhancing opportunity for developing strengths of wisdom, purpose, and creativity. His arguments are well supported both by germane case studies and by detailed chapter end notes. The author makes wonderful and creative use of metaphor and clever turns of phrase, provides useful chapter summaries and even gives the reader an action plan for redefining and "re-aging." This book definitely deserves careful reading and heeding by readers interested in a balanced, refreshing positive perspective about aging.

Read the back of the cover: "This book has a simple message: aging brings strength." He's not kidding about the simple message part. What I "learned" can fit on a postcard: To age well appreciate and use your wisdom and have a positive attitude about life. That's it! If you don't believe me, then spend $27 and read 200 pages to see for yourself.

This is a book about courage, resilience, and faith. The author tells of the courage of the people he sees growing older, their abilities to deal with the realities of aging, and the faith these people have in themselves and others. He has helped me see that retirement is really the independence to develop and grow into the person I aspire to be. A worthy read.

This book makes me feel very positive about aging! The author sounds very experienced and provides excellent real life examples.
