I have a number of years of programming and system experience, but had not been exposed to Access. I decided to rewrite my business systems using Access to convert them from the Paradox system that I had used for years. Using this book and Microsoft Office Access(TM) 2007 Inside Out (Microsoft Office Access Inside Out), I have already rewritten more than half of my systems in a couple of weeks, working on them for a couple of hours each evening. Granted, I am still not an expert, but I have been able to write Virtual Basic macros, designed and completed a number of tables for my data base, forms using multiple subforms, selection boxes, and functional buttons, and a number of professional looking reports. The use of these two books has greatly shortened my learning curve and helped me to be productive in much less time than it would have taken without them.

WOW! 10 stars at least! I had used other databases over the years (I used Quatro Pro for years, then they went away). I battled with Access and others for a few years. I finally got Access 2003 to 'kinda' work for me but I had no power to use it the way a database is meant to be used. Then when 2007 came along (I had to upgrade as I went to Windows 7) I became even more confused. Ribbon? Filtering? Macros? I WISH I HAD GOTTEN THIS BOOK YEARS AGO! After spending just a few hours of reading I now LOVE the ribbon (I used to swear at it) and each chapter I read gives me more power and ease of use. I now LOVE ACCESS, and am becoming a 'power user' thanks to this book. Other software reference book that I've used (the list is long), as well as friends and 'geeks,' have been difficult to follow and boring...[making it impossible to learn much]. Well this book is EXCITING and EASY to read. The author uses great examples, step by step guidelines and screen shots. This should be the book used by all schools and trainers for Microsoft Office 2007.Do yourself a favor, start at chapter 1, read ALL of the book (even if you THINK you know how to do something) & do the exercises. By the end of chapter 3 I realized my biggest problem was 3 or 4 simple (but VITAL) steps that I was always missing. PLUS, you'll quickly learn fast & easy shortcuts, multiple ways to do things based on your personal preference &/or needs.Thank You Mathew and all who contributed to creating this wonderful book, it is honestly one of the BEST investments I have made for my office as well as my hobbies. I thought I knew WORD & EXCEL, but I will be buying those books as well, as I'm sure they too will unlock many hidden tools that I can discover and fall in love with. I NOW ENJOY MY OFFICE AGAIN! I'm always surprising people with the speed that I can access tons of different data. Information is meaningless if you can't access it quickly & easily, if you get this book you will be 'smart' and on top of things quickly. I've even have friends who never saw the need or desire for any database software, now they can't live without it. I could go on, but I'll settle down now (I hope my JOY and ENTHUSIASM about this book has come across to you in this post.Buy and read this book (and keep it handy as a reference manual) you won't regret it! Seriously, Don Michaels.

This is the book for "old pros" and newbies alike. It includes all the information the newcomers need, written clearly, with good screen shot illustrations. It has "Nostalgia Corners" for those who have worked their way through numerous past versions. We don't want to have to plow through explanations of things we already know. This points out things that are no longer the same, and ways to get around that if you really feel you have to.Another thing that should help all users, at least in the Kindle version, is the index. It is very detailed and has very direct links. I found converting databases written in Access 2003 worked smoothly, when I simply looked problems up in the index. And new database development worked equally smoothly. In brief, this is the book I was looking for.

This is a fairly comprehensive Access 2007 manual. However, it could be more concise. For example, "They [action queries] commit changes (usually to multiple records), and once you've applied the changes, you can't reverse them" could have been simply "action queries make irreversible changes to table data". So, if this is a representative possibility, the book could be much shorter without sacrificing information. Also, busy people do not need or want to read unnecessary musings about hypothetical companies. For example, the author writes "In this example, you'll meet Boutique Fudge, a mail-order company that serves decadent treats to a large audience of chocolate-crazed customers. Their daring chefs are always innovating, and they need a better way to manage their ever-growing catalog of chocolate goodness. They also need a way to keep track of customers and the orders they make." Is this supposed to make the book enjoyable? Personally, I just want to cover the material as fast as possible. The author's fantasy is just slowing me down. I would have preferred "Consider a hypothetical company that needs to catalog products and track customers and their orders." Done.

O'Reilly books are the standard fare for any modern software developer and this one is pretty good. The writer or editor tended to use too many contractions, probably with the intent of seeming conversational, but it made the reading choppy. Like reading an article full of spelling errors. But back to the technical content. The examples and exercises were clear through the first three quarters of the book but starting falling apart towards the end. I learned a lot and was able to develop the application I had in mind for Access. The 'Missing Manual' concept is very good - and is especially welcome for any Microsoft product.
