This book was pretty good.......I liked some of her others better. My problem with this book and my reason for giving only 4 stars is that it was predictable. I guessed the ending before I ever got there. All in all if you have an afternoon that you have nothing else to do, this book would keep you entertained. I do like this author and have read many books by her.
As a former foster mom and now adoptive mom I could SO relate to the moms in this book as well as the children. Such a lovely story so well written. This author has a gift for writing about people in a compassionate and real way. Too many books portray foster children as awful or so troubled they can't get over their challenges. This book showed the children in a thoughtful and realistic way. Some kids are easier to be around than others but kids in foster care , though they have their challenges, are often amazing individuals. Foster care blessed our lives in beautiful and difficult ways and it is wonderful to read a book that portrays that side of foster care. Also, Jackie's feelings about Star made me turn red because I too have struggled with some of the things she feels in the book. So real. Absolutely a book worth reading.
This book is a character study; their relationships control the plot. While reading this book, you will feel for foster children, how their lives are often scary. You will also feel for good foster parents in their struggles to understand and help their foster child. A beautiful horse is at the center of the story. A neighbor is so cranky and just downright mean that even the local police avoid her if possible, but she is so necessary to the story. You will worry while reading this book. The title? Here goes. Don't laugh. I think it means that horse people know the comfort level of their horses by the sound of their hooves. Only one mention of it is made in the book. Get the book. You will enjoy it.
This book should and most likely will, become a classic. It is that incredibly good. The depth in the writing and the plot is just classicly great. I could not put this book down. The characters you meet--Jackie, Clementine, and Paula each tell her own story. There is another character who is important, too--Star. What you have here is a story where you get every side to it. Each character tells you her side of the story. All the main characters happen to be females. Jackie and Paula are an unconventional couple with foster kids, who have moved into a new neighborhood. Clementine is a mean, hateful (sensitive, hurting) individual who thinks she does not like the new 'family'. Clementine has a beautiful but neglected horse who Star, one of Jackie and Paula's foster kids, quickly falls in love with. Star sees the animal for what it truly is--sensitive, hurting...I LOVED THIS BOOK. It teaches a lesson about life, and helps us to see weirdos, misfits, etc. in a different light. (I don't mean the characters really are weirdos or misfits--those are just labels many of us would normally give them) This book is so much more than just a great summer read. It is a keeper. My congratulations to the author. Super job. Keep writing. (If you have a 'day job', I think you should quit it. The general public needs you.)
Clementine is an angry older woman and it only gets worse when a new family moves into the rental house across the road. They're a same-sex married couple, have 3 children (not their own, but foster children ... rejects in her mind), they have a whole array of dogs and cats, and most of all, the oldest child is a girl who insists on petting HER horse.Paula and Jackie are looking for a new beginning, for themselves and their children (Quinn, Armando, and Star). Quinn and Armando are adjusting well, but Star is moody and rejects them at every opportunity.It doesn't take long for long for things to come to a head when Clementine confronts Star about the horse and then marches across the street to complain about the girl's attitude. It's only the first of many arguments that eventually lead to Star taking a radical action and Clementine coming to grips with her own daughter's death and realizing she does have a heart after all.
