This is a favorite. Well worn pages from great times with the Lord.The formatting is basically scripture chunks rephrased to be personal. Josh 1:7 in the ESV says, "Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go." Whereas Boa's paraphrase says, "May I be strong and courageous and careful to to obey your word; may I not turn from it..."It takes verses like that and makes them a personal prayer to God. Great idea, and good flow from verse to verse. Then after the Scripture rephrase it offers a short directive on praying out of that idea.The book has three months of daily prayers. Each day has several headings like, "Adoration, confession, renewal, petition, intercession, affirmation, thanksgiving, and closing prayer." Excellent resource. Couldn't recommend it higher.
I own several books on prayer and by far this one is my favorite. I actually look forward to getting up in the morning and spending time praying through the Scriptures with the help of this book. It has helped me to become more balanced in my praying by incorporating worship and adoration, confession, affirmation, intercession and renewal. I have recommended it to many friends and family.
Amazing resource for daily devotions as the reader is led each day through scriptures to reflect upon and pray through. The devotions are divided into a 3 month schedule, so it is repeated 4 times a year. I am halfway through my second year and not tired of using this resource! There is so much scripture that it does not seem like it's repeating that often.
I love that this book stresses the importance of allowing Scripture to prompt the believer in prayer! Nevertheless, the artificial pairings of Scripture by this author--in my opinion--prevent the context of said Scriptures from properly guiding the believer in prayer. The concept is great, but the application is lacking. Suffice it to say: the believer should pair his praying with Bible reading allowing the Spirit to speak through the Word and then responding to what the Spirit says in prayer. Read and pray! I would not recommend using this resource. Rather, just use your Bible! Read a chapter or two or three and then pray in response to what you have read.
This is the exact same book that was published 4 years earlier with a different title and by a different publisher. Hopefully Amazon will note that online as they usually do.I bought that book here on Amazon a few years ago, and it was called 'Handbook to Prayer' with the same subtitle. Boasting a leather cover, the previous edition comes printed on one of the three kinds of thin paper used to print Bibles, and indeed the edges of the paper are gold. It was published in 1993 by a small publisher in Boa's home town of Atlanta, and had the same 3 months worth of daily prayer guides.The book is excellent, and I wanted more of it -- just not more copies of what I already have.
This is a very edifying prayer book! I use it all the time, and I often come across just exactly the scripture I needed for encouragement or exhortation or just deepening my understanding of God. That is the way with scripture when you read it regularly. I appreciate that the scripture is already chosen for these headings: adoration, confession, renewal, petition, intercession, affirmation, thanksgiving, and closing prayer. I frequently gift it to friends, especially those who, like myself, are sometimes short on time and need encouragement to be able to get into the Word in small, but meaningful chunks of time.
I cherish this little book. It has helped my prayer life in ways I never thought possible. Like others, I have always had difficulty "focusing," and letting outside thoughts and distractions wreck my concentration on Him and Him alone. For one thing, for the first time, I've learned to read and pray aloud, and this has made a huge difference. Praying Scripture, has opened my heart to His Presence. Thank you, Ken Boa, and I look forward to moving on to volume 2.
I use this book daily. Helps lead you into a deeper relationship with Jesus. It is strictly Bible based. As a practice, I pray the Word out loud, pause, and think about the passage. Sometimes give praise, thanks, or ask for help. It is really God sent. I only wish I found this book earlier in my life. Dr. Boa did a magnificent job in putting this together. Many thanks to him.
