Much like "Ordnance Went up Front" (Roy Dunlop 1948) this is an account written a few years after the close of WWII on the fighting on Guadalcanal, by an author with an eye to tactics, weapons and small details lacking in most general accounts written 15 to 20 years after the event. Lt. George was a careful observer. Well worth buying for the commentary on the Japanese army when it was in its prime in late 1942/early 1943. A lot of material on the Japanese equipment of the time, for the point of view of one on the receiving end. Also some description of National Guard pre war NM rifle practice and Camp Perry. The only defect is he obviously had read some of the inaccurate comments on Jap light MG and repeats the now debunked idea the 6.5 Light MG used a lightly loaded rife cartridge, when it did not. But on the interesting facts related to being on the receiving end of Jap MG fire, well his commentary is unlike any I have seen on the use of the MG by the Japs. well worth adding to your library if detailed historical understanding of the early phases of the pacific war appeal to you.

Gave this book a three because I wanted to read about the author’s experiences on Guadalcanal and beyond. Toward the end he mentions Burma and serving in Merrill’s Marauders, which would have made for five star (or even higher!) ratings, but instead he detours into a highly technical discussion about Japanese and American armaments involved in the battles. Too much detail for me - I prefer the human side of the story. Merrill’s Marauders would have been more meaningful, as my father-in-law soldiered in that unit but was not one to share his story with family members. Alas!

....there's nothing new to learn about WW2, along comes John George. Champion civilian shooter, gun enthusiast, and US Army officer who fought the Japs up close on Guadalcanal, in Burma and India. The first chapters are an autobiography of his experiences training in the U.S. through harrowing combat on Guadalcanal. What sets this work apart is Mr. George's expert and brutally honest appraisal of Japanese and American infantry weapons he enountered on the 'canal. Rifles, handguns, grenades, ammo, mortars...all individually dissected for their effectiveness in jungle warfare...Nambu, light & heavy MGs, knee mortar, M1, Colt 45, Arisaka, pineapples, mortars and more. Some designs - yes..U.S. weapons too - were inferior to the point of sacrificing American lives in combat. A superior read, especially for a shooting enthusiast and WW2 buff like me.

The first half of this book was excellent, well written. But the author was fixated on weapons and the last half of the book consists of chapter after chapter on both American and Japanese infantry weapons. These chapters go into details that anyone but a gunsmith or expert shooter would find exceedingly boring. So I enjoyed the first half and skipped through the second half.

Lt George takes you along to the SW Pacific to the island of Guadalcanal during the first 6 months of that campaign with an Army unit relieving the 1st Marine Divisions 4th Regiment. This was written not long after the war so things are fresh in the authors mind as he took copious notes on what he saw, felt and experienced. It was good to see a different perspective of that because all ones ever heard about the Pacific is how the Marines did it all when nothing could be further from the truth but the Navy had a better public relation managers.Lt George gives his opinions on the Japanese as fighters along with a meticulous break down of the weapons they used along with his opinions on theirs and our weapons...along with some insights to the thinking of what was needed training wise and what was actually done. His take on shooting and walking strikes a chord with anyone who has 'been there and done that'. Great book and I would recommend it to anyone to augment everything else they think they know about that particular campaign.

1/3 of the book relates to the target shooting Community and pre-World War II activity of the author. About 1/3 of the book is dedicated to infantry actions on Guadalcanal. The final third related to individual characteristics and descriptions of both Japanese and American weapons.I found this quite tedious with a great deal of minutia that I didn't need to know. So to be fair I would give four a half stars to the actual activity on Guadalcanal, three stars to the activity leading up to the invasion and two stars for the descriptions of the weaponry, Especially that of the Japanese soldiers. So I averaged it out at three stars.

The writing s on his combat actions on Guadalcanal were well done and very interesting. The latter half of the book is more suited to people who are interested in the nomenclature of the weapons used in the Pacific campaign on both sides. It is written in minute detail to the point that you could use it to breakdown these weapons, repair and clean them and and return them to functionality.
