Life with the Ojibbways on the Canadian frontier in the late 1700's and early 1800's was no picnic, as this guy can testify. What confounds me is the number of times he feeds his starving family and the starving group he may be with at the moment, and gets nothing but abuse in return. They steal his horse, attempt to murder him, steal his children, steal his goods, steal his furs, and on and on. Yet he restrains himself and continually invites further abuse.Anyone with a lesser constitution would have succumbed early on, but Tanner survives it for decades, but finally disappears mysteriously. Fascinating reading, but you have to wonder why he didn't fight back more than he did.The numerous trips by canoe and portage back and forth between the far points of the Great Lakes and Manitoba are treated lightly, as if the trips were no big deal. One wishes he would have been more descriptive of the routes and the hardships endured.

This book was required for my American Lit class. It's not the genre I would normally read, but I found Tanner's autobiography (or biography, since he didn't write it himself, but dictated it to a ghost writer) fascinating. I could have rented it from my college, but I liked it enough to want a copy for my personal library. "The Falcon" is an account of life among early 1800's American Indians--their lifestyle and culture--from the perspective of a captive (Tanner) who not only adapts, but embraces them as his own. It begins with his kidnapping and ends with his return to the white man's world thirty years later. It's not a thrill-a-minute adventure (though most assuredly an adventure), but a true picture of life among the Ojibbeway Indians. If Colonial-period history, Indians, and captivity stories are of interest to you, I highly recommend this book.

This is a rare and interesting look at how Northern Indians lived in the early 1800's as told by someone who lived with them for 30 years.

Great copy of Tanner's autobiography. Great record of life as a Native American without all the modern re-write of today.

Shipping was fast. Price was good, and its about a relative!!

one of the greatest indian stories I have read. This white man was captured by the indians in the 1820's and spent many years living in a tribe. He married and had children. Then ,returned to his remaining white family.

Super service and a great read.

just read the first chapter, saving it for summer reading next year when we are canoe camping, sounds really great so far, what a crazy life
