I devoured this magnificent book over a two-day period. Excellently researched and written, authors JD Chandler and Teresa Kennedy-Dupay have produced a chunky, intelligent look at a bygone era but whose legacy is still evident.If you are a history buff, you will love this work. This is a great book. Well written and organized. Interesting pictures.
Utterly unreadable and filled with nonsense. The writers are to busy fulfilling their political agenda to actually provide any documentation of their claims (no footnotes to back up wild claims).Even if there wasn't a radical progressive agenda being pushed, the writing it tedious. What should be an easy engaging read is instead a chore to slog through. Easily the worst book I've read in 2016.
Loved all the detailed dirt on the founding families of Portland. Also liked how it followed connections across multiple topics. Also I liked the effort to relate historic local events to what was going on with the rest of the country.
A fine addition for anyone interested in the history of Portland, Oregon, communities during and after Prohibition, corruption in government officials and police forces, and a more nuanced version of US history.
A bit pedantic in most places when dealing with politics. Some of the stories of individuals are very entertaining and interesting.
