The SNMP MIB Handbook by Larry Walsh is very well written and conveys much of the same information presented in his training courses. Now everyone from product supervision to MIB developers to users of developed MIBs can have this industry information in their hands. As a Network Engineer, I find many manufacturers enterprise MIBs to be chockfull of errors as well as deficient in providing the kinds of information essential to network management. Now that a book actually details these MIB short-comings, that this book will become de-facto reading for those doing this essential development. There are many references to common and not so common developmental mistakes as well as composing MIBs to the highest standard. When he does die her mother does what she can to keep the farm going because the farm had been in the family for generations and she wanted to keep it up for her eldest Victor, who has left to go work in a lumber mill. Her next oldest brother, Clarence Wayne, or Babe, who is half of the twins with the other half being Silvaney, is evil, while Silvaney suffered brain damage after a childhood illness is quite simple and loves to traipse about in the forest. Her older sister Beulah dreams of something better, while Ethel is a born talker and saleswoman. Garnie her younger brother is known as the preacher due to his obsession with revivals. Her mother came from a well off family and married for love and was cut off from that family when she did so. Red hair and tempers run in the family.Beulah becomes pregnant with the town boy Curtis Bostick's child, but whose mother won't let him have anything to do with her. So Beulah has the child and names it John Arthur after their father who was being buried the day the child was born. The description of the funeral and burial rites for a mountain person at this time are very interesting. For example, you are buried in your burial quilt with coins on your eyes.When Ivy's mother cannot keep the farm going they pack up and move into a bed and breakfast run by Geneva. At this time it's only Ivy and Garnie, because circumstance has led the others in different directions. Garnie come under the influence of a corrupt revival preacher and Ivy at the age of fourteen becomes pregnant, just as she is offered the opportunity to further her education at a nice school in Boston. Now she has to drop out of school to raise her child. When her mother dies, Ivy and Rose go to live with Beulah and it is there that she meets up again with Oakley Fox the first boy she kissed back on Star Mountain. But there's a much more interesting man who has her eye now.This book is told through a series of letters written to various people in Ivy's life. The unusual thing about this book is that there are no response letters. You are dependent on what Ivy says in her letters to figure out what has happened or is being said by the other person. Also, the language of the book is quite written quite backwoods at the beginning but it improves as her education improves across the novel. It is quite creatively done. Ivy is quite the firecracker and grabs life by the horns and does not let go. She makes mistakes but she does not necessarily regret them. I fell in love with this spirited character who reaches out to the reader connects with you in a very basic way. My first thought was that this book is going nowhere. Then I thought of writer Lee Smith having to remember the misspellings and her computer page must have lots of red lines under words. As I read on, I got used to 'Ivy's' style. (It did improve.) The novel is in the form of letters written by Ivy to friends and family over a 70 year period of her life from her small West Virginia home. It includes the history of the 20th Century; the depression, world wars up to the seventies and the characters who were all part of these events. It was an enjoyable book getting to know Ivy, her kin, friends, lovers and enemies through the letters.

Such a beautifully written story. Ivy Rowe, grows up in Appalachia poor but with a passion for reading, language and the beauty of nature. Beginning in the early 1900's, she tells her story through a series of heartfelt letters to various acquaintances and her long-dead sister.Through grinding poverty, heartbreak, death of loved ones, and, most of all; passionate love for her husband as well as other men, but mostly for her children, Ivy will grow in your heart and mind.I loved this book so much. This wild and intelligent, passionate and curious girl grows into a strong and woman, sometimes passive, mostly feisty.Please read it! This is one of my all time most unforgettable literary characters.

What's needed is a guide to how marketing is changing.Unlike the zillions of e-books about Facebook marketing, Twitter marketing, etc., my book would cover and compare all marketing channels. Unlike the e-books, my book would include case studies of real companies. Unlike the marketing textbooks, my book would focus on tech startups, not on dog treat bakeries and corner grocery stores. Unlike the books that say you'll get rich if you follow their formula, my book would say that marketing is changing rapidly now, and the marketing plan that worked even a few years ago won't work now. I proposed teaching entrepreneurs instead to make small-scale experiments, see what works and what doesn't, and continuously evolve their marketing.I scrapped my book proposal because "Traction" is that book.There are some things I would add (and perhaps Weinberg and Mares will in a second edition). My proposal included case studies of both success and failure. "Traction" only has successful case studies, leading to a sense that every marketing strategy leads to success. Including both successes and failures would lead to a framework for what channels work for what types of companies. E.g., viral social media likes may work for a microbrewery, but not for colonoscopies!Points I like about "Traction":- Entrepreneurs should spend 50% of their time on product development and 50% on marketing, but product development sucks up all your time. It's more satisfying to add a new feature to your product than to spend your limited capital on a marketing test that completely fails. We feel comfortable developing our products but feel clueless marketing them.- Integration with Lean Startup. That was the book I proposed a few years ago, and Eric Reis beat me to it!- How much traction (downloads, press coverage, sales) investors want to see before they invest increases every year, as marketing gets faster and cheaper to some startups.- Every entrepreneur has to hand sell the first few customers.- Building a viral marketing campaign will take one or two engineers three to six months! I.e., viral marketing doesn't magically happen just because your product is so cool.Stuff that's missing:- Celebrity endorsements is a 20th channel.- A chapter about market research, e.g., why you should ask open-ended questions instead of closed-ended questions.- The PR chapter needs a section on finding journalist contacts, se.g., whether to use the Meltwater or Cision databases.- Tradeshows are about having outgoing, enthusiastic salespeople, not about having a flashy booth.

I've been head of marketing and strategy for startups and interesting brands for several years, and this was the first book I've ever read that is actually useful and something I frequently reference in channel, strategy and overall marketing brainstorming sessions. Why? Because it provides a comprehensive view of contemporary best-practices in marketing, without all the old baggage and fluff to which many marketers still cling. Today's marketing means you're actually responsible for revenue. If you're still doing the kind of marketing that focuses on activity and top-of-funnel vanity metrics (like how many unsuspecting tradeshow attendee badges you zapped thanks to your TV giveaway, or passing a huge seemingly impressive number of crappy MQLs to sales so you can hit your quotas), then please don't waste your time reading this. You won't get it, or you work somewhere where you can't actually apply this learning due to all the internal risk-adverse forces working against you. For everyone else who believes in the new of ways of marketing (basically, marketing without all the BS), this book and others in the series should be in your e-reader or physically sitting next to your laptop right now.

Traction was extremely helpful for me as a budding entrepreneur and author. In the book, Weinberg and Mares lay out 19 different "traction channels" everyone looking for their next client should consider. Furthermore, they challenge you to give a hard look to some of the channels you would normally dismiss without a second thought. Why? Sometimes the channel you least thought would work turns out to be highly effective.Something I appreciated about this book was how much objective research went into it. The list of traction channels wasn't something they pulled out of their backside, but rather something that resulted from extensive interviews with entrepreneurs and business people who have experienced real-life success with them.The only reason I didn't give Traction five stars is because many of the sections lacked the practical advice needed to put these strategies into action. To that extent, I felt like it left me hanging in quite a few areas. Not every reader is going to know who to contact for a PR campaign, how to get started with SEO, or the best way to setup a sales process/team. If you are looking for very specific information like this, realize that this book won't deliver it to you.Now to be fair - each of the 19 channels probably deserves its own book to describe such detail, and I don't think this book was intended to be an encyclopedic guide to implementing every channel. This book was surely intended to be more of a top-level overview. To that end, it was great for calibrating one's understanding (from a leadership/executive perspective) of each channel. It inspired me to think outside the box with my own business and projects, and I still found a lot of value in it.Anyone new to the startup world or who plans to start their own business deserves to read this book - and probably also the Lean Startup by Eric Ries. Some have said Traction and the Lean Startup go hand-in-hand, with Traction focusing more on customer acquisition and Lean Startup focusing more on product development. The build-measure-learn concept is present in each, however, and is a clear theme for all new business owners.Once again, would certainly recommend to anyone new to the startup world or entrepreneurship. It's a quick and easy read with many good ideas.

Simple, but worthwhile book. I've re-read it a few times. It's basic point is that there are (at least) 19 channels to gain traction (customers) for a product or service, and we tend to only look at a few we might be familiar with. The second point is that after traction in one channel is achived, for additional traction, a different channel or tactic is likely needed for the next phase. Detailed discussion of the different channels and examples of their use in various organizations. Definitely worthwhile for those who are doing product marketing, at any stage of an organization's growth.

I don't know why Michelin Guides stopped publishing a more recent guide to Berlin, but was happy to find this one despite it being 10 years old. The discussion of history, architecture, etc. in the Michelin guides is second to none. We bought an up to date iPhone app for maps, public transportation, restaurants, etc.

Did not realize until I got it was the 2003 edition

this book was in near pristine condition, one annotation found.it remains an excellent source of information although opening times are unlikely to be current!delivery was rapid and we were pleased with the interaction.

Although this biography does not add too much new to Solway's (I do not know why Solway's book is not listed in this book's bibliography) it is well researched and comprehensive and had a nice writing style. However for me the purpose in reading biography is to understand how a person developed. The middle of it, that is, the part about Nuureyev's working adulthood, is not linear but thematic. The author discusses events concerning topics like filming Nureyev's dancing or his dealings with a particular person that happened ten years apart in the same paragraph and sometimes even in the same sentence. Dates when Nureyev was doing certain things or when certain things happened to him need to be made much clearer. We do not need a datebook of every tour but it is hard to follow how things developed in his life and work when the narrative is not linear and dates are not always stated. I agree with the others that there was not enough analysis of various aspects of Nureyev's life and his motivations in spite of the length of the book. A biography does not have to be a complete psychological analysis but Nureyev himself was pretty self analytic in spite of the fact that (as I read elsewhere) that he never did psychoanalysis because he believed that part of his strength lied in being impulsive and not second guessing himself. As a psychiatric nurse it seems to me that he had a very narcissistic personality and had some manic depressive tendencies. I would not have been surprised if he were also on amphetamines which in these days were not considered illegal substances and this would account for his mood swings as well as excess energy. In spite of the length of the book I believe that I actually got more insight of Nureyev's personality and motivations from Rudi Van Dantzig's memoir of him.

As I already had a tattered paperback copy of this book, I purchased this one as a replacement. When I finished reading this book in 2008, I was astonished by this incredibly complicated man and the story of his (short) life's journey, but I was not sure that I liked him. I was fascinated by him, so I proceeded to read all (except those publications not translated into English) I could about him. I have also had the pleasure of meeting severalpeople who knew him personally. While they do not dispute Ms. Kavanagh's narrative, they feel that her concentration on his questionable escapades obscures his great art, his talent, his enormous contribution to his discipline and many other positive sides to his personality. They loved him, as did many wonderful people. Apparently, he wasn't always a "bad" boy. The book is long and more of that length could have been devoted to his many triumphs.

My interest in Nureyev began when I read the Solway book on the life of this great ballet star. Until that time, I had only a passing interest in ballet in general and a moderate interest in Nureyev after viewing a Barbara Walters' interview of the dancer. Therefore, I had acquired some knowledge of Nureyev at the time I purchased the Kavanagh book. What initially drew me to this account of his life was Kavanagh's writing experience with the New Yorker. I expected excellent writing and the book did not disappoint. Kavanagh's extensive research, including detailed interviews with friends and family of Nureyev promised a read that was rich in background and first-hand accounts of the dancer. After reading this book, I felt as though I actually knew the man as well as anyone could know another simply through reading about his/her life. Kavanagh's book inspired me to purchase five more biographies of Nureyev, some of which are written by well-known dance critics as well as close friends of the ballet star who change the role of the male dancer more than any other individual in the world of professional ballet.

This huge biography is well and sensitively written, well-researched, and generally a fascinating read. Actually, this is my second copy of the book. The first one I lent to someone who never returned it, and I wanted to replace it for my permanent collection. The book is particularly fascinating in its coverage of Nureyev's defection, and the resulting KGB efforts to smear, assault, or assassinate him, and the pressure put on his friends and associates in Russia to persuade him to return. This is the kind of book that bears repeated readings.

I admired Nureyev a great deal and certainly recognize his contribution to ballet in much the same manner that I admired Callas and Pavrotti for what they did for opera, but you've got to really, seriously nearly be obsessed with Nureyev to wade through this tome. And, as usual with these tell all bios, you end up liking the subject a lot less than you did before.

A great read due its truly describing the risk taking, persistence, and absolute devotion of a genius and his love for ballet. His mission to restore the ballet in its many forms to all ages all over the world was herculean. Kavanagh allows the reader to feel well deserved empathy toward Nureyev and also respect for his dedication and passion without "glossing over" his humanity.

Fabulous account of a very talented and interesting artist. Incredibly well researched, and an easy read compared to many biographies which can be quite cumbersome. A must read for my fellow ballet enthusiasts!
