This is a brief review of the 3rd edition published in 2012. I am a physician with a minor in nutrition science back in college. I train in swimming, cycling, and running (triathlon). If you are looking for a "For Dummies" book on endurance nutrition or something with a little bit of everything, then this book will meet that need. However, if looking for a whole lot of detail, then you may be a little disappointed in a few chapters but this is only because the subject of nutrition is Huge and I'm sure only so much can be put into a ~400 page book.In my opinion, the first 3 chapters can be entirely skipped, unless you are starting with knowing nothing at all about basic nutrition in which case these chapters may serve as a good start for you.Chapters 4 and 5 are most useful chapters and contain the real info that most readers will be looking for. However, some of this information has been covered in some popular general Triathlon training books. That being said, these chapters in this book expand beyond what you'll find in The Triathlete's Training Bible or Going Long: Training for Triathlon's Ultimate Challenge (Ultrafit Multisport Training Series). I am quite sure I'll be going back to these two chapters again and again in the future.I've skipped Chapter 6 to read later so can't comment on that yet but skimming through it looks like it'll be worthwhile to read. The section on Ergogenic aids (chapter 7), I found concise and confirmed what I think most well read athletes should already know so worth reading if you aren't familiar with these yet.The remaining 7 chapters are specific to certain sub-groups of athletes and so chances are only one or two may pertain to any one reader; I've read a couple of them and found a couple pieces of good information but some readers might find them more useful depending on your needs (see chapter titles below).I didn't actually realize until after reading 60% of the book, but there is a selected bibliography at the end. It would be nice to have that bibliography referenced in some way to make it a little easier for the reader to pursue more detailed information if they so choose. One HUGE pet peeve of mine that totally drives me insane and I just can't write a review without mentioning it. The default units used throughout the text is to use the English system of measurements often mixed with metric; it gets very confusing when most anything else you'll read on the subject will state something like 1g/kg of "X" and be reading a section where you already know this but then get tripped up by seeing something like 0.5g/lb.Anyway, this is not a bad book at all and tries to cover a whole bunch of information. In doing so, it's likely to have a little "something for everyone"; however, I would like even more in depth regarding some of the hard science and clinical studies behind sports endurance nutrition. Though, to be fair, I think this book does a good job overall and will meet the needs of > 90% of whom I'd suspect to be the usual readers on this topic.Chapter 1: Daily Hydration EssentialsChapter 2: Energy Nutrients for Optimal Health and PerformanceChapter 3: Vitamins, Minerals, and ElectrolytesChapter 4: Your Training DietChapter 5: Food and Fluid Intake for Training and CompetitionChapter 6: Weight Loss, Muscle Building, and Changing Body CompositionChapter 7: Ergogenic AidsChapter 8: Nutrition for TriathlonChapter 9: Nutrition for CyclingChapter 10: Nutrition for Distance RunningChapter 11: Nutrition for SwimmingChapter 12: The Athelete with Unique Nutrition ConsiderationsChapter 13: Performance Boosts and Problem-Solving with NutritionChapter 14: Nutritional Strategies for Extreme Environments

To nobody's amazement, there is a lot wrong with the way people eat generally: one-third of all added sugar in the American diet comes from the consumption of soft drinks, and French fried-potatoes are the primary vegetable. According to a Johns Hopkins University study every single American adult could be overweight by 2048. Current prevalence of obesity and being overweight is 71 percent, which is nothing to crow about since it was only 57 percent in 2000.I am an ardent cyclist and while we all know that cycling is a good way to get the pounds off what happens if you want to push up the performance beyond just losing some weight? I would very much recommend you read Monique Ryan's "Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes." The 2nd edition of this book came out in 2007 and from what I see it remains the Gold Standard for anyone interested in this subject. The first part of the book deals with the basics of nutrition in order to establish a base. You learn a great deal about the building blocks: carbohydrates, fats and proteins, along with information on hydration, and vitamins and minerals. Much of this information is available elsewhere easily enough but the writing here is very straightforward and easy to understand. There is a detailed discussion of the Glycemic Index and what it means in terms of building your diet. Helpfully, the author refers to the needs of those following a vegetarian regime as well.Part II of the book is "Your Training Diet" and covers the rather complicated principles of an endurance athlete's diet. Not only will you arrange the type of foods you eat depending on what stage of your periodized training you are in but you also have to determine the correct calorie levels to maximize effectiveness, including recovery. There is a specific section on the nutritional requirements for building muscle that is quite detailed.Supplements get their own section, although the chart on p. 187-188 summarizing them does not pull any punches about their effectiveness (or lack thereof). It was interesting to note that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) policy on supplements prohibits the providing of muscle-building products such as the popular creatine and even protein powder by a collegiate institution to its athletes. There are real concerns about the contamination of products: the International Olympic Committee found in a study that 15 percent of 600 over-the-counter supplements included non-labeled ingredients that would have resulted in a positive doping result. With all this useful information, the reader is now set to go into the last section of the book which covers nutrition planning for specific endurance sports. Of particular interest to me is Chapter 9, which covers multiple cycling disciplines: road cycling, mountain biking, track cycling, cyclo-cross and even recreational distance riding.Ms. Ryan notes: "Cycling is undoubtedly one of the most physically challenging sports that an athlete can pursue. It requires muscular strength, power, and endurance. Cyclists complete long aerobic training rides to prepare for competition, but they also incorporate a significant amount of anaerobic exercise into a program that includes intervals, sprints, and weight training."The fact that refueling on the bike is a simple task compared to running or swimming is a good thing, given that fluid and carbohydrate demands during training are so high.Other endurance sports covered in Part III include rowing, running, triathlon and swimming so if you do cross-training this is useful as well.Throughout the book one finds valuable sidebar pieces on training in the heat or at altitude and how you can deal with this through proper nutrition. The book concludes with Appendices that cover the Glycemic Index of Foods, a comparison of vitamins and minerals and another on sports nutrition products. Appendix D is very important as it is a guide to planning meals, including snack ideas and tips on reading labels. There is even a section on dealing with restaurants and good choices to make and another sidebar with useful tips for vegetarians. Appendix E has sample menus, which look a bit boring but are only a guide and show you breakdowns by carbs, fats and proteins for the base, build and transition periods of training (with vegetarian alternatives). This is not a cookbook but explains what fuel you need to participate in endurance sports. Taking these basics there is no reason you cannot come up with attractive and nutritious meals to suit your taste. I would suggest using this book in conjunction with an on-line food diary, such as FitDay, to record what you have eaten and where you can quickly learn the amount of calories you have consumed and their composition. One of the lessons I take from this book is that different sports and different periodized elements require varying nutrition. Nutrition is a key to success and while this book is aimed at competitive athletes it is so well-written that everyone with an interest in what they eat and in their physical performance will want to read it.Of course, all this effort and self-denial and measuring how much food you eat can sometimes be a bit difficult for someone not paid to ride their bikes. For the final word, perhaps we could turn to former World Champion and three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond. He replied, when asked what he thought about during races in Europe: "Dairy Queen, God, I dream about Dairy Queens."

This book is awesome if you're an endurance athlete or looking to get into an endurance sport. It breaks down everything if you're into that and it gives examples and summaries if you don't care about knowing the "whys" about everything and just want to know what to do. Keep in mind that this is not a diet book. This book doesn't tell you how to cut calories in order to lose weight. It tells you how to replace the key vitamins and nutrients in order to train and compete at a high level. I reference this book a lot.

For a beginner marathon runner who was just starting to get serious, I really didn't fully appreciate the intricacies of nutrition in my personal performance. This gave me the understanding and insight needed to overcome some of the issues I'd been facing, and good strategies to overcome them. What it did NOT offer was the latest fad, but offered information in to the research that was being done with said fads (Paleo diets for example).I'd recommend this so others in my position. It will give you a good grounding to understand the messages your body is sending you.

I wanted to love this book. I've been reading all of Riordan's mythology series' since the beginning with Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief but this one fell flat to me. Riordan for whatever reason is officially in a slump of epic proportions, arguably dating back to the first Trials of Apollo book. The heart and humor which defined Percy Jackson, the Kane Chronicles, Heroes of Olympus, and at least the first tome of Magnus Chase. There was a little bit of humor, but it was not the humor we typically get from Riordan. The jokes were simple and lacked the cleverness that defines Riordan's typical work. I will try to pick out some strengths, then address the most glaring weaknesses and end with a few more strengths.First, I really enjoyed Apollo's growth. He started out as the spoiled god of the sun which defined his character in the first of these books. The fact that he did not grow is my biggest annoyance about the first book in the series, The Hidden Oracle. Finally, Apollo began to show some growth and began to recognize the value of humanity beyond just amusements for gods. It takes some very tragic occurrences for him to get there, but Apollo finally grows. The downside of that is that his growth takes basically until the end of the third act, so we get very little of the new and improved Apollo. Hopefully this growth will stick and salvage the final book in this trilogy. Another good part is the introduction of new mythologies, such as the Crete and Minoan gods who predated the Greek societies. I wish Riordan would have spent a little bit more time on these. He even introduced some African mythology in a potential hint for a new series, but that is also a negative so more on "Jimmy" a little later. Further, I love the villains in this series. Unlike previous series that Riordan has written, the antagonist is not a typical god, but former Roman Emperors. As a history buff I love seeing this new take on the series. Now we get to the negatives, which are unfortunately prevalent. My first negative is that the story was very static. By that I mean that we did not have the typical quest that is so common in Riordan's works. We spend the entire book in and around Indianapolis. There was no goal that we could travel with our heroes. This particular format proved to be flat, static and boring.I think one of the biggest minuses for this book was the overemphasis of gay/lesbian characters. Now, I loved when Nico DiAngelo came out as gay in The House of Hades. It proved to be a major positive for his character and the series. I am also gay, so I have no qualms with a gay character but Apollo's commentary on cute attractive males in complete overkill. It borders on being offensive. We don't need every time Apollo sees an attractive male for him to comment on their attractiveness. There are more subtle ways to do the same thing without making it seem like Apollo is attracted to every male he sees. Further, every significant new character in this book was either bisexual or homosexual. That's not necessary and again overkill. Emmie and Jo are lesbian parents to a crucial character. The same role could have been sisters with one having a daughter and the other a niece. I don't necessarily mind that they are a lesbian couple, but combined with Apollo's constant references to past boyfriends and cute boys it adds to the overkill. Worst of all, a new character was introduced who at first seemed to only be an object for Apollo to fascinate over, even earning the offensive title of loincloth Jimmy. The character, whose real name is Olujiame, is revealed to have a potential connection to other gods, from African mythology perhaps. I fear this is an introduction to the successor series to Magnus Chase. Don't get me wrong, I would love for Riordan to tackle African myths in about five years. But right now, I think he needs to take a break. His writing in this book just reads like he is bored and phoning it in. It is understandable since he has been putting out a book a year since 2005!I want to close with a positive. The last fifth of the book is good. Best of all, Apollo and the reader understand an important message of kindness, understanding, empathy and compassion. If you can make it through the first 24 chapters or so there are some strong redeeming qualities that make up for some of the major problems that prevent this book from being among the greats of Riordan's career. I choose to believe that the books ending provides some hope for the future of this series and the Magnus Chase series.

Rick Riordan is now 12 books in his giant series that started with The Lightning Thief and he is not slowing down. The Dark Prophecy picks up 6 weeks after the conclusion of The Hidden Oracle and we start off with action right from the get go. The one thing I love about Rick Riordan's books is that you are never bored. If there isn't any action going on your laughing your head off, if your not laughing your reading some gripping action sequences. It is one entertaining book from start to finish. I am enjoying Apollo so much as the MC, do I miss Percy (of course) but Apollo just has this freshness about him even though he is 1000+ years old. It was great to see Leo and Calypso again after the ending of The Blood of Olympus. Heck it was even more great to see Thalia again (I loved Thalia!!). The Riordan is keeping the story fresh but finding ways to bring all his other well loved characters back into the flow is just simply amazing and I for one cannot wait to continue on this journey and see how it all comes to an end!!

For some resson, I got the large print instead of the regular print edtion I ordered.Riodran charms us with his wit once again. Despite the serious plot, a talking arrow is the comic relief (as well as Apollo). It's just as engaging, if not more, than the first book. The plot and thoughts flow better. However, I was wondering how Megan McCafferty aged two years in six months. Age is usually described to get a sense of apperance for young characters. I heard that Meg was a trans though. It's very confusing to imagine her appearance while reading the book. Even more confusing is that she still fits in Sally Jackson's clothes. And was able to do so as a ten year old. The change from appearing ten to twelve often includes significant growth and development.Even more complex is how a seven year old can be the size of Leo Valdez. He was described as being scrawny compared to white people, but does not mention that Calypso is taller or wahtever. So, I will assume that Calypso is even more petite than Leo. Which isn't suprising, as my Greek relatives are very petite.I loved how accepting everyone is of Hematia and Josphine's relationship. Usually, people face scorn for interrracial relationships, even more for homosexual ones. They don't seem to mention the stigma, which would be surprising in Indianapolis (the mid-west is more racist and conservative for the most part). They just don't seem to care and ignore the world. That makes them very brave, especially since Josephine is from the 20's.A would-read for sure. The actual book was in great condition, but had differently styled cover art than the edition of the first one I bought. The length is very reasonable too, about 400 pages compared the first one with a skimpy 250. It included a short story that is in The Demigod Diaries, which was disappointing since the first one had a new to me short story.

LOVE the Trials of Apollo Book Series! I am such a huge fan of the Percy Jackson book series and was thrilled that Rick Riordan created a specific series of stories featuring one of my favorite characters Apollo! This was such a fun read and as always you can expect to be entertained and educated simultaneously! I really love that about Rick Riordan's books! It's no wonder why they are enjoyed by young audiences as well as those who are just a wee bit older (I'm 52) alike! I'm so looking forward to the release of the third book in the Trials of Apollo series!

I tried to get a grasp on Bhutan before visiting, but all the books and blogs didn't give me any sense of what to do once I was there. Luckily, I had Rob & Stavan as my guides and I spend the next 10 days encountering Bhutan in a very different way than most visitors do. Bucket Lists are my business. Though tourism statistics for Bhutan don't warrant the publishing of a book on the subject, Rob & Stavan's knowledge and ability to convey the important aspects of the kingdom certainly did. Finally, (after several years of subtle and not so subtle nudges) they agreed to share their insider knowledge in book form. The Bhutan Bucket list is the result. Though this book can not replace the VIP experience Rob and Stavan delivered in person, I must admit that reading this made me feel like I was right back with them staring down bulls in the Paro Valley. Interesting facts, great things to do, an obvious tone of respect, understanding and awe for the culture and an underlying nudge towards experiencing Bhutan instead of just seeing it make this a solid investment for your visit. Don't hesitate to buy it.

Title irrelevant to content and the promise someone expects out of it.Very poor content, photos of poor quality and printing, like a photocopyText with large fonts and line space so to "add" more pages and volume to the book. All text could occupy 4-5 A4 pages with 12-font single line space.Average 10 lines per page per "way" or "thing" to do/experience in Bhutan. More info can be acquired just googling 6 letters 'Bhutan'.Text writing quality suitable for a local tourism agency website itinerary but not from writers of the claimed background.Except someone wants to contribute to authors' living expenses in Bhutan there is no reason to pay such unreasonable price for this book. Actually any price is unreasonable for this book.If the book had "Look inside " option then customers could made their own fair judgment. But it does not....

The text is so ridiculously small i was working too hard to try reading it. Lots of beautiful pictures but I'll never know what there are about because the publisher made trying to read it a chore. I'll try to return it.

Living in world overflowing with traditional guide books and tourist information I can't say how delightful it was to come across a book that actually allowed me to get a true feel for the areas traditions and culture. Crossing off items on this list during my trip to Bhutan (I didn't get them all unfortunately!) allowed me to slip into the shoes of the locals and have a truly authentic Royal Kingdom experience!

There is some content here that will give a sense of the place prior to traveling in Bhutan. But, it's a bit thin and contrived and could have easily been written over a weekend. And although it actually includes more than a hundred items...some of them seem forced, as if the author really struggled to come up with the requisite number (Get Stoned By a Monkey, Chat with a Monk, Use a Bhutanese Toilet, etc.).That being said, I did recognize a few items/suggestions from the book while I was in Bhutan.

The authors have shared 100 of their favorite discoveries after living/teaching in the remarkable kingdom of Bhutan. Their suggestions encompass and reflect their appreciation of the country's natural beauty and rich cultural, social, and spiritual life. Many list items include a photo, some historical trivia, as well as valuable and practical travel info. The titles are often humorous, "Do Battle with the Leeches of Gedu","Strut Your Stuff in a Drayang." It is an interesting, informative, quick and fun read. I would recommend this unique book to anyone dreaming of or planning a trip to Bhutan.

nice

The Bhutan Bucket List is packed with both ideas of how to get the most out of a visit to Bhutan and deep insight into the unique culture and customs of this relatively unknown country. I hope the authors offer a Kindle version. I'll buy it too so I can bring it with me to Bhutan.

#407,090 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is an amazing edition of the first few years of the Barry Allen Flash character, along with his girlfriend Iris West and her nephew Wally (introduced soley to be the fastest boy alive, Kid Flash). The paper is a heavy white matte, just the same as the recent paperbacks Superman: The Golden Age Vol. 1 and Justice League of America: The Silver Age Vol. 1. The colors POP! This is miles ahead of other reprints of the same era's materials, such as the Crisis on Multiple Earths series (although has no overlap with those books, in this first volume). If you are turned off by the high cost, weight, size, and gloss of the The Flash Omnibus Vol. 1, this inexpensive counterpart replicates the first half of that book, barring any sort of introduction or forward. This book has no introduction of any kind but does "feature" a table of contents with detailed creator credits, except for the letterers. The art is striking and graphic with excellent detailed reproductions throughout, except for Barry's Showcase origin and a couple pages later on obviously culled from the "Theakstonization" process. The covers also suffer and appear the way most do in pre-70s DC reprints, i.e. thick lines with heavy aliasing, since no high quality production versions still exist. The stories themselves are rather brief and silly, falling not far from the classic DC mold. You see the initial appearances of such villains as Gorilla Grodd, Captain Cold, Weather Wizard, Dr. Alchemy, and the Trickster. After the unintentional, hilariously irresponsible accident that gives young Wally West his skills, he appears in a few backup stories teaching the youth of 1960 just how hip it is to be square. Elongated Man makes his introduction to DC continuity teaming with Barry a few times, though while Barry knows Elongated Man's civilian identity the reverse isn't true. I like when Ralph Dibny has supposedly given up costumed crime fighting, though vacations to South America in his costume seeking the source of the plant that gives him elastic powers. All in all a beautiful volume for completionists though I imagine the juvenille nature of the stories may turn off many, particularly when compared to the popular, heavily story-driven TV show.

The content of this volume has been well reviewed on Amazon, so I'll only speak of the production/printing quality. This is my favorite reprint method ever used. The paper is nice and sturdy but not too thick. It holds color very well, but isn't glossy. The Archives were a nice project but I never like how shiny the pages were. The pages in this volume look exactly the way I imagine these stories looked the day they were printed. The covers are gorgeous. The pastel colors come across very well. I feel like I'm holding history in my hands! Makes me want to reread them over and over again. These include a bit more than the "Flash Chronicles" series did. So they cover more ground per volume. Apparently DC doesn't like to go much past 4 or 5 volumes before starting over. Maybe we'll get through all the never-before-reprinted 60s stories before this series runs out of steam.Side note: I really wish DC would start focusing on the 70s material. Prices of individual issues are skyrocketing these days.

I bought this compilation of silver age Flash comics to read with my son, as we are both fans of the DC characters, and it doesn't disappoint. Here, we get to see how police scientist Barry Allen got his powers and then grow into the superhero known as the Flash. His early adventures are exciting, and we love the artwork. The printing is of very good quality. We have a lot of fun reading this, as we switch off doing the voices for the different characters. It makes for some good father/son time together! When we finish with this one, we'll definitely be getting volume 2.

A wonderful collection of the Flash silver age comics from the 1950's - 1960's!! Most people could never afford to buy the original books, but here you get reprints of Showcase #4, 8, 13 & 14 and The Flash #105-116!! If you were to try to purchase these, you'd be out hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars!! This is well worth the price!!

Ah the flash. Before flash point, before crisis, before any of that. The flash with iris, grodd, solivar, the trickster, captain cold, weather wizard and more! Starting with his origin and some great Carmine Infantino art, it's certainly worth reading!

Fabulous Silver Age fun! Highly recommend for anyone who wants to live like a kid in the Silver Age.

The Human Bone Manual

Review

"Tim White and Pieter Folkens’s The Human Bone Manual is a terrific addition to the tool kit of osteologists and archaeologists. The book-concise, tightly written, and rich in photographic detail-will be the standard human identification reference for generations to come. Every field project or lab that deals with skeletal remains, ancient or modern, will depend on it." --Clark Spencer Larsen, Distinguished Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences, The Ohio State University "As a human osteology manual, this book is an excellent resource for archaeologists, palaeontologists and forensic anthropologists. It is a thoroughly written, well illustrated and can be highly recommended." --Francis Thackeray, Transvaal Museum, Pretoria, South Africa "This volume is a compact form of previously highly successful editions of Human Osteology by these same authors. In its newest form it is somewhat abbreviated, but is nevertheless an extraordinarily accurate and complete guide to all of the fundamentals of osteoanthropology. The illustrations retain their same vivid three dimensional quality as in previous editions, and the accuracy and thorough review of all major methods (aging, sexing, excavation, laboratory care, etc.) have been retained. It is the perfect companion text and manual for any undergraduate or graduate human osteology course, and is equally highly recommended as well to students of medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, chiropractic, etc., simply because it presents such clear and instructive presentations of fundamental human anatomy. It is, quite simply, the best human anatomy manual currently available." --C. Owen Lovejoy, Kent State University

An excellent guide to the human skeletal system. Keep in mind this manual is made to be taken into the field and so is not as thorough as the larger book written by one of the same authors. I purchased this book after I used it in one of my anthropology classes. It is well written and well organized. The book is written primarily for anthropology/archaeology, but it would work for anyone looking for a better understanding of the human skeleton. This is a good reference guide and worth purchasing and adding to your bookshelf.

Paired with the matching textbook, this manual was invaluable for osteology studies! Very handy quick reference guide for lab days. Really needs to be paired with the textbook though, for more in depth learning.

This 'pocket' edition offers the forensic student and professional a handy and detailed field manual. The book is broken into two main sections, the beginning chapters offer an introduction to the science of forensics while the later chapters cover in precise detail the bones and their features systematically. A handy scale and comprehensive chapters on ethics, recovery and modification via animals and weathering makes this volume valuable for the archaeologist. Black and white photographs express bone topography from several angles and from the same individuals to maintain scale and morphology. The brief glossary could be expanded with definitions for basic Latin and Greek scientific terms for beginner students.

Whether you conduct scene investigations for a law enforcement agency, coroner's office, or medical examiner's office, I would recommend that you have this book in your scene bag. Easy to find information, clear and concise black and white photos for comparison, and it even has 2 fold-out rulers for scene photos. However, it's not "Bones for Dummies." It does contain technical information, and you should already have a basic working knowledge of skeletal remains. I also have the author's Human Osteology book, which I highly recommend for students interested in forensic anthropology.

Very detailed and used this for a class but kept it after for references and to keep my mind fresh on the information.

Arrived on time from seller love the outline of the book and was a required text for a osteology course and helps out a lot, however if bought in conjunction with Bass Manual it is the perfect pair to learn and work with. Full of examples and diagrams helps a lot if your a visual learner.

Very interesting read

Brinkerhoff's little guide is just the right size for stuffing into the pocket of your cargo shorts or daypack, and it covers a fair sampling of short and easy South Salt Lake City and American Fork area hikes especially suited for hikers with limited abilities or families with small children. Also, the brief hike descriptions, with trailhead info, trail notes, distance and hiking time estimates, are generally helpful and reliable. But this book falls short of its potential, for it could easily have been greatly improved without sacrificing its convenient size or adding much to its cost simply by adding a few more details to some of the hike descriptions, extending the coverage a bit to include a few more popular and spectacular local hikes, and especially, by improving the trail maps.Having hiked every trail in the book, many with this text (and others) in hand, I routinely found myself correcting or supplementing Brinkerhoff's cursory trail descriptions and hand-drawn maps (which are currently little more than wiggly dotted lines with a few essential features like paved roads, trailheads and lakes) with such things as as elevation, distance, topography and terrain notes, maps of converging trails, and occasionally, minor corrections. Admittedly, some of the trails covered in the book don't actually require anything more than instructions to the trailhead, but most of them connect with other trails the reader might want either to follow or avoid, and in such cases better descriptions and maps would be a genuine help. And since the book is so small (and admirably so, for it is by far the most portable of the many Utah trail books available), it could easily have been expanded to cover a greater number of short and popular local trails--like Ensign Peak, Provo's Rock Canyon, and a host of candidates from Sandy and Millcreek Canyon. As it is, despite the title, the text really only covers Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and American Fork Canyon (with the inclusion of a single trail in Pleasant Grove under the American Fork Canyon section). In my opinion, improvements of the kind I have mentioned would have made the book a much more serviceable text without adding significantly to either its bulk or price, and thus, should have been included. As it stands, I recommend "Best Easy Day Hikes SLC" as the best available short and cheap guide to easy Wasatch area trails, but a serious hiker will prefer something like David Day's "Utah's Favorite Hiking Trails," Steve Mann's "100 Hikes in Utah," or John Veranth's "Hiking the Wasatch," all of which are infinitely more informative and helpful--but also bigger and pricier. Or buy this for it's convenient size, and then supplement the applicable entries before your trip with important details from the bigger and better books. Hopefully, a reworked edition will soon save you the trouble.

This book is a must have if you're a hiker near the Salt Lake City area. It's great for the novice hiker, families with smaller children, or nine-to-fivers like myself trying to pick up a quick hike on weekdays before or after work. All of the routes in this book have two conveniences in common. None of the trailheads are more than an hours drive from the bottom of the canyon, and none of the hikes are more than a few miles round trip. This makes it really easy to knock of several hikes a season. Most of them average about one hour of hiking time. Brian Brinkerhoff also does a great job of describing what kind of terrain to expect. Some of the included hikes are paved for easy wheelchair and stroller access, or for the ease of beginning trail runners worried about their ankles. Several on Brinkerhoff's list includes highlights such as waterfalls, alpine lakes, and even some mining ruins, concentrating on the little and big cottonwood canyon areas.

This guide was perfect for my two days of hiking at Alta in August 2006. As a purely recreational hiker traveling alone, this book was the ideal companion.
