The series with Chico Bon Bon is great. My 6 and 4 year old enjoy me reading these stories to them. After my 100th time (believe me I know) they still ask for it every now and then. It's entertaining just to read off the list of tools he carries in his tool belt. Kudos to the illustrator/author as the drawings were very well detailed and we enjoyed looking at them.

THis book cracks me up. The pictures are adorable and quirky, and the story is very humorous and well done. We bought it for my father in law (a contractor) and then ended up buying one for our son as well because it was too cute not to own our own copy. It is full of off-the-wall humor that the younger kids love (my third grade class loved it) and the older adults can appreicate as well. It's definitely worth it!

My 2 year old grandson love to build things and us tools so when I saw this book, I got the set for him. He loved and loves it yet. He now has his own tool belt and wears it as much as possible. This is a WONDERFUL BOOK for a child, especially if he has a dad who is into making and fixing things.

This is one of the small handful of books I don't rotate in and out of our read-most-nights collection. We read it at least once a week, maybe two or three. It's got detailed, fun illustrations and my 4yo loves the story.

Found out about this book from a handyman magazine. Great buy. My son laughs every time we go thru it. The fact that the monkey has a desire to use some critical thinking skills and tries to find a solution/tool is great. Exactly what I am wanting to teach my kids versus having everything just served-up to them.

I got this book for a couple little boys I babysit (age 2 and 5) because after I had checked in out from the library and subsequently returned it, they kept asking to read about Chico Bon Bon. I gave them the set of three for Christmas and it was a hit. Cute book with detailed illustrations that make it fun to read/look at again and again.

I bought this book for my 4-year-old son (turning 5 next month), because he's obsessed with monkeys. When I read this to him and his 7-year-old sister they get such a kick out of it. They both love it! The other 2 Monkey with a Toolbelt books are also great.

My 3 1/2 yr old daughter loved the first Chico Bon Bon book. Now she is in love with the second as well. Although Chico's adventures take place only in his home in this book, the story is fun and surprising, and the illustrations keep the laughs coming. (Even if you do need a magnifying glass to see them sometimes!) Worth every penny.

Mesmerizing, profound, even for a study machine such as myself. Cal Newport, a college student himself, wrote these books after interviewing extraordinary students around the country who had straight A's, full social lives, and did lots of extracurriculars such as starting businesses & non-profits, and being politically involved. The point of all his books is how to study more efficiently so you can be an outstanding student while fitting in other essential dimensions of the college experience such as friends, parties and guest lectures. And unlike "speed reading," his techniques are not smoke and mirrors; they are solid and make sense.I didn't feel there was much overlap between his books. "How to Win at College" is composed of 75 two-page "tips" that cover a very wide range of topics. This is the book I originally fell in love with and ordered copies of for many friends, and I recommend reading it first. His second book, "How to Become a Straight A Student," focuses on a few key skills: the trap of "pseudo-studying," time management, how to actually study, conquer exams, and write papers. However once I read it, I liked it almost better than the first one!In short, they are both indespensible, easy reads, hard to put down, and completely different from any other "study skills" books you might read. They are basically "myth busters" of conventional wisdom about school success. If you want to know the "secrets of the universe" regarding succeeding in and loving college, look no further.

I read this book after reading Newport's other study guide How to Become a Straight A Student and was looking forward to more of his easy to understand, quickly read nuggets of wisdom. Although I found the advice in his previous book to be more helpful, I did fine some words of advice that I will surely put to use in my upcoming semester.Among the gems I found, Newport reminds students to "Study in Fifty-Minute Chunks" and "Learn to Listen." In these short chapters there are ideas to help the student better utilize their time by minimizing distractions and knowing exactly what to listen for in a lecture. By far my favorite and most memorable line from this book is "A good analogy is that writing is to a college student what shooting hoops is to a basketball player." Wise advice indeed. I would recommend this book to high school an college students alike. The chapters are short and jam packed with good advice.

As a high school student who is going off to college in a few months, I feel that this book contains a lot of the details, tips and tricks that one needs to succeed. It was highly engaging and concise whilst still providing rather profound feedback/advice. Honestly, many of the "surprising secrets" are not too surprising at all (like the fact that taking naps is a horrendous idea), but Dr. Newport managed to consolidate solutions to all of the little student struggles into a streamlined format.It's a very easy read. I got through it in about an hour. I will likely be reading this a few more times before going off to college. Also, his high school guidebook was amazing! I wish I read that one earlier.

To be honest, if I had just graduated high school and someone gave me this book as a gift, I would roll my eyes and never open it. I picked it up a week ago, however, now that I am almost done with my second year of university, and I really do wish that I had had it (and cared to read it) two years ago.The book is seventy-five pieces of advice, each with about two pages of explanation. The advice is pretty simple, as you can see from looking at the table of contents ("Dress Nicely for Class," "Never Nap," "Eat Healthy," "Always Go to Class"). But the reason this book is effective is that it serves as a quick-reference manifesto for some of the more important (to me) advice.For example, I'm taking a grad-level fiction writing class. No due dates (except the final deadline at the end of the semester) and no class. You just write at your own pace and turn in a portfolio. This is incredibly difficult for me to do, and I'm unbelievably far behind in the work for the class. I was really quite worried about how I would ever pull it off. The whole semester, my fiction work has been priority #75, and I usually crash between priorities #14 and #20. But with some of the advice in this book ("Keep a Work Progress Journal," "Set Arbitrary Deadlines," "Avoid Daily To-Do Lists," "Don't Take Breaks Between Classes"), I actually feel pretty confident about being able to finish on time. By reading this book (and [...] and Newport's more recent book, How to Become a Straight-A Student: The Unconventional Strategies Real College Students Use to Score High While Studying Less) I've adopted some strategies and habits that have actually yielded results.Before Cal Newport, I was up late every night, angrily doing my homework until I couldn't drink any more tea, without any free time. Now, I'm getting my homework done before sundown (for the most part), feeling enormously more relaxed, and regaining a good amount of the excitement that I had about college before I got here.If you're on your way to college, and you're the sort of person who can stomach (and listen to) advice, do yourself a favor and read this book. Newport admits in the introduction that not every piece of advice will be for you (for me: "Exercise Five Days a Week" and "Use a Filing Cabinet"). If you want to be more than an average student without being a "grind," this book has a good deal of solid advice.If you're already in college, and you're looking for more in-depth and practical advice, I recommend also reading How to Become a Straight-A Student: The Unconventional Strategies Real College Students Use to Score High While Studying Less. It has more thorough advice for confronting the terrors that you have come to know in college.

Wow this book set is a great resource for looking younger!the author provided a lot of valuable facial exercises that you can implement into your daily routine quite easily. And the homemade remedies for facial packs and masks are definitely going to come in handy,I found this book to be very informative/educational on what wrinkles are and how you can best deal with them. I know a lot of us are ok with growing old and the changes that come with it but, there's nothing wrong with wanting to combat against things like wrinkles as much as is naturally possible

These two books are definitely for reading specially for all women who are very conscious on their looks. Women often feel good specially if they look good. This book helps them feel good in way that they look good. I really recommend these books to all women out there! I can't wait to follow all of these great tips and share it with my friends.

This book is so poorly written and some of the advice is absolutely stupid. She states "do not utilize face item containing liquor." Noboy puts liquor on their face, she means alcohol. Most statements are written as if the author were trying to convince us of her intelligence. Does not work!! Please Kate, if your first language isn't English, get help. Although some of the information was plausible, some was even informative but a lot of it was just common sense and information that has been around for years e.g. "use sunscreen". Next time use a proofreader and a copywriter, it would make the book make more sense and would improve the flow. I found it frustrating to read.

This book is a waste of your money. Obviously Chilton has been taken over by the bean-counters and cannot invest into producing even a fair repair manual any longer. Photos are of poor angles and are all black & white, grainy, and almost worthless. The paper is cheap newsprint. The instructions only cover selected things and what you need to know is maddeningly left out. Take a Pass on this book.

It's good for the shade tree mechanic, but as others have noted - I remember these as having more detailed descriptions for disassembly of the majority of the vehicle. Since I've a 2K1, it will help me with some of the idiosyncrasies of vehicle specific required periodic maintenance, but the detailed repairs will be left to me going beyond what is documented within this tome. :-(

Got this manual as for a do it yourself guide for my truck. There is lots of important information contained in the manual. well worth the price and has good value. Suggested maintenance intervals are also very helpful.

I got this manual not expecting much from it and my expectations were about right. It provides very basic and generalized information about the truck. Not a lot of illustrations of assemblies to ease the explanation of disassembly and reassembly. There are only very basic wire diagrams as well. Overall, not great but better than nothing.

Good course if you're looking to learn how to sight read music. Less so if you want to understand how to play. Having the audio download is very helpful, but the MP3 (and Midi) files have a lot of back-up instruments that could confuse students. With the Midi, you can isolate just the student piano part and isolate the right hand and the left hand separately and cut out all the tambourines etc. etc. that may be confusing. Listening to the isolated Midi seems to help learn the songs and get the timings right.

I wouldn't use anything else. I went to the music store, looked through about 14 different kinds of beginner music teaching programs. Then I bought about 4 of them, and this was the clear winner by a mile. We're into the 3rd book and I'm very pleased. Teaches enough without being overwhelming. Songs are accessible to all ages, and my 8 year old is as engaged with the books as I am. We're both learning to play piano, and I suppose that's good enough for me! Oh - be sure and get the CDs if you are learning from scratch. Knowing how it's supposed to sound makes a big difference.PS - Very occasionally I have to call my mom and ask her what the book means by something, as it assumes some more knowlege than I have. Having a person who knows how to play, that you can consult every once in a while, will make the process a breeze.

i like the book. My 5-6 yrs old finished their book 1 so we got the book two. It includes some chopin and bach pieces which are very nice. One disappointmentis the CD. I was expecting it to be played with piano but it is not. It is like listening to an orchestra or other types. That will get u familar with the melody but not able to compare how u actually play the piano.

John Thompson's methods are CLASSIC and have withstood the test of time. Used my very first book in 1968 and recently purchased the series to teach my granddaughter how to play piano. BEST piano course books out there.

It is never to late to pick up these books we used as a child and study and learn ALL the things that keeps us from enjoying the piano.I was too busy being a tom boy when I could have been studying and learning all the things that are on the "ground level".SO I never have learned to "enjoy" my piano.Going back and reviewing the first grade book I had and then I was ready for the second grade.At 63 I am getting more enjoyment from my piano. The "John Thompsom" series are recognized and promoted by most music teachers. The basics are tought so they can be learned. ( with just a little willingness from the student)

I teach piano to my five grandchildren. One has completed this book and another is well into it. I chose the John Thompson book because the melodies are lovely. The instruction progresses carefully, introducing music theory in a gradual and very understandable manner. Each tune builds on what the child has already learned. I am very satisfied with the quality of the instruction. Our eldest granddaughter is now on Book 2. I'll continue to use this series and supplement with other classical pieces.

Great piano book songs and technique

I'm 79 and I learned out of these books. My daughters also and now my grandchildren. Can't begin to tell you how many endless hours of pleasure learning piano has brought me throughout my life. If you're going to learn how to play, this is the best in my opinion.

I wrote my dissertation on her rhetorical use of myth.I recognized, and still recognize, myself in her stories and essays and I did, again here, in this beautiful collection of short essays and musings, in which she is examining "the last great frontier of life, old age, and exploring new literary territory: the blog, a forum where her voice--sharp, witty, as compassionate as it is critical--shines" (front cover). The subject matter ranges questions from readers, her cat, Pard, turning 80+, faith and belief, among others. She writes, as always, with grace and style. Her prose is beautiful. As Michael Chabon says, "As a deviser of worlds, as a literary stylist, as a social critic and as a storyteller, Le Guin has no peer" (back cover).My love affair continues.Highly recommended.

Do you realize how many books, and in how many genres, poet-fiction writer-essayist Ursula JK. Le Guin has published to date? Using the listing in the front of her latest collection, there are 23 works of fiction (novels and short stories, some of them extraordinarily influential), eleven books of poems (and a twelfth is mentioned in a piece in this book), and two volumes of translations (of Lao Tzu and Gabriela Mistral). She’s a force! And as in a collection of occasional pieces I just reviewed by polymath Umberto Eco (Chronicles of a Liquid Society), even her most occasional postings have substance. Reaching her early and then mid-eighties, she decides to venture into blogging. She posts sage to pithy comments on a wide range of topics, from the ups and downs of aging (read her assessment of the Harvard alumni survey), to the joys of raising a kitten to adult cathood. She writes: “I’ve lost faith in the saying ‘You’re only as old as you think you are,’ ever since I got old. ”She takes on the current fascination with the two most common cuss words, one dealing with procreation (but not really procreation, really with dominance and battering), the other with excretion. On being a writer, she notes that meaning in art isn’t the same as in science: “The meaning of the second law of thermodynamics … isn’t changed by who reads it, or when, or where. The meaning of Huckleberry Finn is…. Art is what an artist does, not what an artist explains…. All I expect of a good potter is to go and make another good pot.” There are sage comments on the craft of writing, on how being a woman writer discriminates against one in a still male dominated publishing and critics’ world. She asks why we never question the desirability of economic growth. And in a follow-up essay asks, “when did it become impossible for our government to ask its citizens to refrain from short-term gratification in order to serve a greater good?” (This is as close as she comes to an environmentalist critique in these short essays.) There is a lovely doggerel verse for her cat. (“His paws are white, his ears are black. / When he isn’t around I feel the lack……”) Praise of a John Luther Adams piece. A visit to the Food Bank in Portland, Oregon. Meditations on a lynx, caged up in a wild life museum…. If you like good writing, and following the workings and musings of a sharp, oftimes witty, always observant mind at work, you’ll enjoy and admire these essays. I know I did.

These are collected blog posts, mostly, on a variety of subjects. I'm an older woman, and reading it was like sitting and talking with a dear friend. I suspect it will not seem so sharp, and funny, and wise to others. If you ARE an old lady, get this book. You will not be sorry.

We all lost an important voice for sanity and compassion when Ursula Le Guin died yesterday. All of her writing — essays, poetry, fiction, blog entries — showed the same compelling passion and sharp insight. This wonderful book is comprised of entries on her blog over a period of time. Whether she writes about her cat, her writing itself, or the state of the world, she does so with an acute understanding that will only enlighten readers.

Ursula Le Guin is a remarkably prolific and varied writer, and a deep thinker. She's written dozens of novels that are masterful (mistressful?) -- exciting and thought provoking, several volumes of poetry and even a couple of translations. Now we are presented with this wonderful gift -- a collection of essays about aging, art, cats and the meaning of life.As the author pioneers her eighties, she introduces the book with admiration for Jose Saramago and her exploration of a new frontier -- blogs.Some people are calcified and old at thirty; some, like Le Guin, are spring chickens at eighty. These essays address an interesting array of topics. I find LeGuin to be honest and fair. Sometimes cynicism marks an observation, but who can traverse this world without sometimes being disappointed? Equally often she registers great optimism and hope.America is not a country that values its elders. That is a pity because it means a lot of wisdom is ignored. I hope the words of someone of Le Guin's reputation and popularity will not fall on deaf ears. These are things we should hear, things we should consider, and this author is someone worth listening to.These are short essays, easy to read in a few minutes and provocative enough to keep you thinking. Great reading material for bedtime or when you just have a few minutes to read (but a lifetime to consider).
