I read this book in preparation for a new job in Libya. I wanted something focusing on post-2011 Libya, and something that went beyond just the initial overthrow of Qadhafi. This book delivered. It covers a bit of Qadhafi-era politics, a large chunk on the revolution and fall of Qadhafi, and then, uniquely, the second half of the book follows the course of Libya after the overthrow Qadhafi up until 2017, including the migrant crisis, the Tuaregs and politics of southern Libya, the incident at the US consulate in Benghazi, as well as ISIS's expansion into Libya.It's a well-written book: easy to digest, and great for anyone looking to get completely up to speed on the country quickly.

The US intervention in Libya was both one of President Obama's most consequential foreign policy decisions and one of the most ignored. The US bears significant blame for what happened during the aftermath of the intervention, yet we have accepted precious little responsibility. Frederic Wehrey's "The Burning Shores" is an important corrective to our myopic attitude towards this country.Wehrey's book focuses on the aftermath of the intervention, particularly the civil war between the western and eastern halves of the country. Wehrey, who spent considerable time in Gaddafi's Libya, chronicles how and why the country fell apart and reverted to authoritarianism. Much of the book focuses on the politics and decisions by foreign actors that contributed to this mess. In particular, he blames the Obama administration and the EU for not investing more in nation-building. However, the best parts of the book focus on the people, the Libyans themselves. Wehrey interviewed a fascinating cast of characters, from former revolutionaries to elite power players. The focus on people really helps bring the country alive for readers.I recommend this book to students of foreign policy in the Middle East, but also to anyone who wants to seriously understand the consequences of It's an important reminder that what seemed to us like a relatively minor policy decision had profound repercussions in a country far away.

I heard about this book during an interview with the author on NPR and decided to give it a try. Knowing very little about the state of Libya after the fall of Gaddafi, I found this book incredibly informative and enlightening. Wehrey does a very good job of looking at the issues from all angles, and describing the motivations of each of the factions. In addition to being very informative, the book is a page turner, and is hard to put down. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Libya or the Mid East in general.

..and boring. But useful :PI wanted to get a deeper understanding of the Firewire (IEEE 1394x) technology, and it gave me it all I could ask for.

The author does a very good job describing much of the IEEE-1394 specification. He breaks the spec down into a number of very clear and readable chapters that will enable you be well on your way to using the 1394 technology. Also, the diagrams and figures are very helpful -- especially when you compare to the layout of the actual specification.There are a few notable flaws, however. Though the cover says "Includes 1394a", it actually covers the preliminary version of 1394a (1998). This flaw is especially glaring since 1394a came out in 2000. Further, the book is pretty light on the OHCI for 1394 spec.In short, the book is very good at what it does, but needs to be updated and expanded.

Like another reviewer, I've found the book difficult to process due to the TERRIBLE print quality. There are unmistakable artifacts of scanning, as if the entire book was photocopied, page by page.Unfortunately, this makes the diagrams quite difficult to decipher at times, and makes for an uncomfortable reading experience. Items supposed to be discerned by shade are difficult to interpret, details are difficult to make out, and text quality is generally unacceptable.It is worth noting that mine is a "second" edition - I have to wonder if perhaps Addison Wesley lost the master and then had to scan them for reprint.

I didn't even get to reading this book because my copy looks to be printed on a 300 dpi laser printer, then photocopied, then bound. Many of the diagrams are difficult to read as a result. I was very surprised to see that Addison-Wesley was the publisher/printer of this book. Don't waste your time or money.

This book provides an excellent reference of the IEEE 1394 standard. It is written in easy-to-understand language, and is comprehensive in it's coverage. I have not opened my copy of the IEEE 1394-1995 standard since purchasing this book.

I read this book in just a few hours. I couldn’t put it down.I didn’t know much about the Spice Girls, but I enjoy Mel B. on America's Got Talent. Brutally Honest is just that. Some of her story was very unpleasant for me to read, but I plugged along. Never having been abused in the way she has been, and by so many men, it was difficult for me to understand why she kept falling for the same kind of abusive men. I did begin to understand how this happened to her, and I feel so much empathy for her and her daughters. I hope very much that she is now as strong as she says she is and will stay away from those types of men. I hope the drinking has stopped. I hope she continues to see Dr. Sophy until she is one hundred percent sure that she is cured of all of her addictions, including men. She’s only in her early forties. I think she’s still susceptible to falling for the same kind of guy. Be careful, Mel B!! I hope you make a ton if money with this book.

What a gut wrenching book. I cried during most of it. Melanie packs a he'll of a story but it's been a hell of a life. This is a woman I admired and thought she had everything and the best of life. Truth shall set you free. Being a abused wife myself, I know all the signs so reliving that through this book was incredibly hard and there were times I had to put it down and stop. But I am thankful that she had the courage to get this done and start her life over and be the mom her children deserve. My heart, prayers and love to put to a remarkable woman who got sucked into a terrifying experience and was able to recover and come away with her life and love. There is a special place in hell for abusers and I pray one day they all get what they deserve. May Melanie now have the life she and her children deserve. Book packs a wallup!

A heartbreaking, inspiring and raw memoir. This book will strike all of your emotions.The audiobook is narrated by Melanie, her daughter, mother, and third party voice talent that Melanie auditioned. Who narrates the book is not important. What’s important is the story it tells.

I wasn't a huge Spice Girls fan but I was somewhat familiar with her Spice Girls days because my little brother was a big fan. My familiarity with Mel was from her brief reality show and her time on AGT. I've always liked Mel's public persona as I've find her funny and affable. Initially, I had no plans to read the book but after hearing Mel B discuss it on TV I changed my mind.I'm glad I checked it out. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. It only took me three days to finish it. I had no idea that Melanie's experienced so many trials and tribulations in her life. Parts of her story are hard to read but ultimately, I came away feeling relieved and proud that Mel finally had the strength to leave her ex-husband. She's a survivor in every sense of the word. I hope the next chapters in her life are filled with happiness and continued success in her career.I don't want to give anything away but the book will hold your attention even if you have just a passing interest in Mel's life. I do wish she'd talked more about her Spice Girls days but from her perspective I suppose she feels like she shared all that needed to be said. Much of the book talks about the last ten years of her life with her ex-husband and her struggle to survive his abuse. Those chapters she seems to "tell-all" but I'd say the rest of the book is measured and respectful. She's honest but doesn't share more than is really necessary. After all, she does have two young daughter's to protect. I enjoyed the book immensely.

I read tons of biographies and this one really got to me emotionally because I don't believe it's the end nor "happily ever after" for Melanie Brown and Family. Yes, it's brutally honest and I've never been in that kind of relationship because after one incident I would be gone, but that's me. With her, she seemed to want children to "fix" her problems and it seemed her life came first-her children had to follow her wherever they went, and they suffered just as much, probably more. I'm a firm believer to protect children as number 1 idea. I wasn't thrilled to read what happened to her during her choice relationships (except with Eddie Murphy-good guy) but NO, she didn't communicate with Murphy and figured I'll go back and get him...stubborn woman! Instead she ended up with men with MAJOR issues instead! Children again, suffering. If I had read, at the end, that she doesn't drink anymore, and in a program changing her life, cleaning up the past emotionally (not with riches, with emotions) then wow, but she still parties and that scares me. I pray for the children and I hope she decides to put them first. Wait till they are all over 18 years old, then look for a partner in life, great. But they are all still at risk, in my humble opinion which I know equals nothing herein. As for the book cover with her left hand exposed and no ring...what is she saying again? And that Stephen guy is someone who I would hate to even think exists in this world...but should be behind bars forever. NO, he owns a restaurant? WTF is that? I don't recommend this book to anyone unless I know they are going thru this and with a major drinking problem. I cried every night over the last few chapters for her pets and children, her father too. Read this if you like SCARY in your SPICE only!

Ramesh Sharda (M.B.A., Ph.D., University of Wisconsin—Madison) is Director of the PhD in Business for Executives Program and Institute for Research in Information Systems (IRIS), ConocoPhillips Chair of Management of Technology, and a Regents Professor of Management Science and Information Systems in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University (OSU). Edit: I've now finish the whole book. See below for an update.While I'm only about to finish chapter 2, the other reviews here on Amazon have crushed all hope that I have. The book is a constant stream of acronyms (oftentimes undefined), overly wordy descriptions of obvious facts (such as different people having different decision styles), repetition of the same points, lists and figures that neither summarize nor illuminate, and references that were clearly added after the fact in a revision -- you can often guess around what time various lists were made longer and descriptions made more verbose by references to multimedia, virtual reality, intranets, etc.I think that this is the kind of book that an expert in the field would see as complete in that it tries to cover practically everything in the history of BI, but it's totally impenetrable (and demotivational) for the novice who will get bogged down in endless terminology, names of products, and sheer verbosity.I honestly feel bad leaving such a negative review, but it's my hope that any instructor considering this book will not inflict its cost upon their students. Frankly, this book is in dire need of an editor to pare it down to about 1/4 of its size.Update after reading the whole book:The chapters related to operations management / decision science were interesting. These chapters are more hands on, such as how to use linear programming. That being said, it still continues the trend of introducing tons of concepts without defining them (such as "markov models" being mentioned multiple times but never explained -- or at least it wasn't in the index).Overall, I've already forgotten most of the content simply due to the density of the book. Many of the case studies should be completely removed, as they're basically advertisements for companies: some of them even end in "company so-and-so _anticipates_ that it will result in X" -- the study doesn't actually reflect how the solution worked out in practice!

Alyssa's review describe the book 100%. Each chapter talks about some aspect of Decision Support System (DSS) like this: DSS component X is great, example of company that uses component X, some vendors of component X. Rent if you have too, just don't buy the book.

Okay as a primer. Some of the chapters go into a lot of technicalities but it's hard to follow due to the writing style and because there is not enough explanations for things. Ironic, because the chapters are really long. Oh, the case studies or little snippets about actual companies REALLY suck. So generic and worthless like it was written for a middle school homework assignment. I mean have some real, detailed explanations and examples. Almost a waste of money.

This was a required text for a post graduate class. Unfortunately, while the description and content page give the impression that this is a comprehensive and well structured book, the content is underwhelming and the book is certainly not worth the cost. If you're forced to purchase like I was, rent it instead.This book is extremely verbose and the content lacks substance. Don't expect more substance than any given trade magazine or internet article. If I had to wager a guess, the authors have never implemented or even whitenessed any of the technology they write about. Extremely disappointing and not worth my time.

This seems to be written for mid- and upper-level management who want to learn about the available options in the business intel and analytics technology market. This book is basically useless if you want to learn any practical skills. ...oh, and it's useful if you're in college and your assignment is to read this book.

I used this in one of my MBA courses and found it to be quite dry and hard to read. The information was way too wordy and it seemed like they put way more information than necessary. The printing was also not the best. The text looked almost more gray than black as if it was cheaply made.

I rented the online book for a class and the format is horrible. It looks like someone scanned the text from the book and added as an online version of the book. I have a Fire HD 10 and I am not able to enlarge the text without the text running off the screen. Highlighting is very difficult in this book. I've rented and purchased several books and have not had issues like I'm having with this book.

Book is okay. There's some good info but what do you expect from a textbook. The seller is good.

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia (text only) by C. S. Lewis,P. Baynes I bought this copy because for one, I personally did not want a "movie tie-in" version, I wanted to have a hardcover edition that contained all of the books in one that I could keep for years and pass down to my children - in short, good quality, tasteful, with pictures.It was described as being "Used - Good", but it arrived in excellent condition (no noticeable tears on the book itself with only slight page wear). This version came with a book jacket which is identical to the hard cover itself, so I threw away the jacket which was well worn. Also, the book description says "text only", which is strange, because this copy has tons of the original illustrations in full-color (I'll try to post pictures soon).I feel like I hit the jackpot with this purchase and I highly encourage everyone to get this copy ASAP, because I've noticed the price of the "all-in-one" books skyrocketing lately (Barnes and Noble used to have a "leather"-bound copy for $20 three years ago which is $100 now). I sure hope these books don't go out of print, but if they do, you'll be glad you purchased this particular version, because it'll be passed down the family.

This is a beautiful paperback box set of the Narnia collection, that so many of us grew up with. The covers are nice, thick and protective of the pages inside, which are of good paper stock. I have no print fading or errors that I've noticed.The art on the outter box is beautiful on all sides, with a little read up at the top. For paperbacks, I believe this is the way to go! Highly recommended!

 This is a really lovely storybook collection based on all seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Those include: “The Magician's Nephew”, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, “The Horse and His Boy”, “Prince Caspian”, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, “The Silver Chair”, and “The Last Battle”. As the coloring book is slightly longer than average size and there are seven books covered, each is only touched on lightly. The coloring book can be used as an fun addition while you are reading the stories but it does not replace them.The designs are based on the original artwork by Pauline Baynes from the books written and published in the 1950's. In some cases, the artwork has been turned into what I call “wallpaper” style designs with repeated patterns.The designs include considerably more black in shading than usual for coloring books. That is because the original artwork was just that – artwork and not coloring designs. I've found that utilizing the black as shading is what works best for me with this type of design. I've run across it before when original artwork has been presented in this format.On a personal note, the designs bring back memories from my own life. I was a big fan of these books as a child and I would read them over and over again. Once I had children, I would read books to them before bedtime each night and this was a favorite, especially of my late son. He also would read the books over and over again on his own.I am now looking forward to reading them to my grandchildren and I will now also have a book of designs that I have colored to go along with them. I will admit that coloring these designs is a bittersweet experience as I spend as much time thinking of my son as I do in coloring.This is what I found as I colored in this book and tested the paper with my coloring medium. I was able to get good color with multiple layers of the same shade. I was also able to layer multiple colors and blend well using a pencil style blending stick. Both oil and wax based pencils worked well.

Love these books, but the font size is much too small on the Narnia Box Set (with movie pictures on box, linked below). It is advertised as for Grade 3 and up, but likely only Jr. High and older would be comfortable with this small of a Font Size. We are surprised that Harper Collins would publish such a small text Font Size, knowing that many children would be their audience.***It would be very helpful if Amazon would include the Font Size in the product description for books and other literature.*** (Surprised that they don't already include this.)Chronicles of Narnia Box SetWe are sending this box set back regrettably, and instead ordering this 2000-published box set, which is a couple inches taller, hoping it has an adequate font size for young readers (link below). A lot of favorites that should be obvious inclusions are just missing, most glaring among them Reepicheep lifting a chalice in toast on the feast table. Instead much of the book is devoted to filler pages of what would be really hideous wallpaper if one was to do one's room up in them. I really expected a comprehensive collection of Pauline Baynes' fantastic renderings of Narnia and her peoples.My real cut-off standard for a Narnia resource is, "Do I believe the person who created this has a deep love for Jack and Narnia that comes through in the effort." On this I'd have to guess no. I think if you were to give a kid a copy of the boxed set and after they had read them to tatters asked them to organize a book like this, it would be a very different animal... and likely one that would talk.My fond wish is that someone will finally publish a high-quality coffee table book style exhaustive collection of Pauline Bayne's wonderful works at best quality/colour.

I found this book to be very interesting, I like that it gave information about what early people thought of blood. Bright blood was good and dark blood was bad, too much of one or the other wasn't healthy. Learning about how they would try to heal the sick or the mentally ill by attempting to balance the blood was just insane. Blood letting (draining blood on purpose) did absolutely nothing and often resulted in death. Blood transfusions between animals and people, did not turn out well. It took a long time before someone figured out what blood really was for and how it was pumped throughout the body. I enjoyed reading this a lot, I couldn't put it down and read it within one night. I recommend it to anyone that wants to know the history of blood or just finds blood fascinating.

This is a wonderful book for the whole family. HP does an amazing job balancing a lot of facts with fun stories. We bought some copies for friends and family...as well as clients. Highly recommend it.

If I still had a classroom, my kids were still little, or I had grandkids this book would be well read. This book has chapters about the components of blood, how the body makes blood, the organs blood goes to in the body and what it does for the body, then it discusses ancient civilizations, Biblical, Mayan, Aztec, Egyptian and how they perceived blood, animals with different colors of blood than red blood, and finally creatures who drink blood, mosquitos, leaches, bats and vampires. There is a history of how human-kind treated blood issues from the earliest history to today. It ends with a chapter about blood transfusions. These are not cursory chapters that simply introduce a subject. They explain and give details about each subject. This book has chapters, small sidebar sections within each chapter, and illustrations. It is a book for stronger readers because of the reading level, but struggling readers might stay with the book because of the subject. This book is just the kind of reading that will help prepare readers for standards testing, interesting subject with great vocabulary words. If you have a child who is interested in scientific kinds of things or health then they would certainly be interested in this book.I received an advance reader's copy of this book and so some of the illustrations and titles on the sidebars were to come later. The Illustrations were all in black and white. I hope that the actual book will have some color illustrations because color would make it more interesting. There is information in this book that anyone can find something new to learn about blood.
