Ramesh Sharda (M.B.A., Ph.D., University of Wisconsin—Madison) is Director of the PhD in Business for Executives Program and Institute for Research in Information Systems (IRIS), ConocoPhillips Chair of Management of Technology, and a Regents Professor of Management Science and Information Systems in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University (OSU). About 200 papers describing his research have been published in major journals, including Operations Research, Management Science, Information Systems Research, Decision Support Systems, and Journal of MIS. He cofounded the AIS SIG on Decision Support Systems and Knowledge Management (SIGDSS). Edit: I've now finish the whole book. See below for an update.While I'm only about to finish chapter 2, the other reviews here on Amazon have crushed all hope that I have. The book is a constant stream of acronyms (oftentimes undefined), overly wordy descriptions of obvious facts (such as different people having different decision styles), repetition of the same points, lists and figures that neither summarize nor illuminate, and references that were clearly added after the fact in a revision -- you can often guess around what time various lists were made longer and descriptions made more verbose by references to multimedia, virtual reality, intranets, etc.I think that this is the kind of book that an expert in the field would see as complete in that it tries to cover practically everything in the history of BI, but it's totally impenetrable (and demotivational) for the novice who will get bogged down in endless terminology, names of products, and sheer verbosity.I honestly feel bad leaving such a negative review, but it's my hope that any instructor considering this book will not inflict its cost upon their students. Frankly, this book is in dire need of an editor to pare it down to about 1/4 of its size.Update after reading the whole book:The chapters related to operations management / decision science were interesting. These chapters are more hands on, such as how to use linear programming. That being said, it still continues the trend of introducing tons of concepts without defining them (such as "markov models" being mentioned multiple times but never explained -- or at least it wasn't in the index).Overall, I've already forgotten most of the content simply due to the density of the book. Many of the case studies should be completely removed, as they're basically advertisements for companies: some of them even end in "company so-and-so _anticipates_ that it will result in X" -- the study doesn't actually reflect how the solution worked out in practice!

Alyssa's review describe the book 100%. Each chapter talks about some aspect of Decision Support System (DSS) like this: DSS component X is great, example of company that uses component X, some vendors of component X. Rent if you have too, just don't buy the book.

Okay as a primer. Some of the chapters go into a lot of technicalities but it's hard to follow due to the writing style and because there is not enough explanations for things. Ironic, because the chapters are really long. Oh, the case studies or little snippets about actual companies REALLY suck. So generic and worthless like it was written for a middle school homework assignment. I mean have some real, detailed explanations and examples. Almost a waste of money.

This was a required text for a post graduate class. Unfortunately, while the description and content page give the impression that this is a comprehensive and well structured book, the content is underwhelming and the book is certainly not worth the cost. If you're forced to purchase like I was, rent it instead.This book is extremely verbose and the content lacks substance. Don't expect more substance than any given trade magazine or internet article. If I had to wager a guess, the authors have never implemented or even whitenessed any of the technology they write about. Extremely disappointing and not worth my time.

This seems to be written for mid- and upper-level management who want to learn about the available options in the business intel and analytics technology market. This book is basically useless if you want to learn any practical skills. ...oh, and it's useful if you're in college and your assignment is to read this book.

I used this in one of my MBA courses and found it to be quite dry and hard to read. The information was way too wordy and it seemed like they put way more information than necessary. The printing was also not the best. The text looked almost more gray than black as if it was cheaply made.

I rented the online book for a class and the format is horrible. It looks like someone scanned the text from the book and added as an online version of the book. I have a Fire HD 10 and I am not able to enlarge the text without the text running off the screen. Highlighting is very difficult in this book. I've rented and purchased several books and have not had issues like I'm having with this book.

Book is okay. There's some good info but what do you expect from a textbook. The seller is good.

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia (text only) by C. S. Lewis,P. Baynes I bought this copy because for one, I personally did not want a "movie tie-in" version, I wanted to have a hardcover edition that contained all of the books in one that I could keep for years and pass down to my children - in short, good quality, tasteful, with pictures.It was described as being "Used - Good", but it arrived in excellent condition (no noticeable tears on the book itself with only slight page wear). This version came with a book jacket which is identical to the hard cover itself, so I threw away the jacket which was well worn. Also, the book description says "text only", which is strange, because this copy has tons of the original illustrations in full-color (I'll try to post pictures soon).I feel like I hit the jackpot with this purchase and I highly encourage everyone to get this copy ASAP, because I've noticed the price of the "all-in-one" books skyrocketing lately (Barnes and Noble used to have a "leather"-bound copy for $20 three years ago which is $100 now). I sure hope these books don't go out of print, but if they do, you'll be glad you purchased this particular version, because it'll be passed down the family.

This is a beautiful paperback box set of the Narnia collection, that so many of us grew up with. The covers are nice, thick and protective of the pages inside, which are of good paper stock. I have no print fading or errors that I've noticed.The art on the outter box is beautiful on all sides, with a little read up at the top. For paperbacks, I believe this is the way to go! Highly recommended!

 This is a really lovely storybook collection based on all seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Those include: “The Magician's Nephew”, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, “The Horse and His Boy”, “Prince Caspian”, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, “The Silver Chair”, and “The Last Battle”. As the coloring book is slightly longer than average size and there are seven books covered, each is only touched on lightly. The coloring book can be used as an fun addition while you are reading the stories but it does not replace them.The designs are based on the original artwork by Pauline Baynes from the books written and published in the 1950's. In some cases, the artwork has been turned into what I call “wallpaper” style designs with repeated patterns.The designs include considerably more black in shading than usual for coloring books. That is because the original artwork was just that – artwork and not coloring designs. I've found that utilizing the black as shading is what works best for me with this type of design. I've run across it before when original artwork has been presented in this format.On a personal note, the designs bring back memories from my own life. I was a big fan of these books as a child and I would read them over and over again. Once I had children, I would read books to them before bedtime each night and this was a favorite, especially of my late son. He also would read the books over and over again on his own.I am now looking forward to reading them to my grandchildren and I will now also have a book of designs that I have colored to go along with them. I will admit that coloring these designs is a bittersweet experience as I spend as much time thinking of my son as I do in coloring.This is what I found as I colored in this book and tested the paper with my coloring medium. I was able to get good color with multiple layers of the same shade. I was also able to layer multiple colors and blend well using a pencil style blending stick. Love these books, but the font size is much too small on the Narnia Box Set (with movie pictures on box, linked below). It is advertised as for Grade 3 and up, but likely only Jr. High and older would be comfortable with this small of a Font Size. We are surprised that Harper Collins would publish such a small text Font Size, knowing that many children would be their audience.***It would be very helpful if Amazon would include the Font Size in the product description for books and other literature.*** (Surprised that they don't already include this.)Chronicles of Narnia Box SetWe are sending this box set back regrettably, and instead ordering this 2000-published box set, which is a couple inches taller, hoping it has an adequate font size for young readers (link below). I really expected a comprehensive collection of Pauline Baynes' fantastic renderings of Narnia and her peoples.My real cut-off standard for a Narnia resource is, "Do I believe the person who created this has a deep love for Jack and Narnia that comes through in the effort." On this I'd have to guess no. I think if you were to give a kid a copy of the boxed set and after they had read them to tatters asked them to organize a book like this, it would be a very different animal... and likely one that would talk.My fond wish is that someone will finally publish a high-quality coffee table book style exhaustive collection of Pauline Bayne's wonderful works at best quality/colour.

I found this book to be very interesting, I like that it gave information about what early people thought of blood. Bright blood was good and dark blood was bad, too much of one or the other wasn't healthy. Learning about how they would try to heal the sick or the mentally ill by attempting to balance the blood was just insane. Blood letting (draining blood on purpose) did absolutely nothing and often resulted in death. Blood transfusions between animals and people, did not turn out well. It took a long time before someone figured out what blood really was for and how it was pumped throughout the body. I enjoyed reading this a lot, I couldn't put it down and read it within one night. I recommend it to anyone that wants to know the history of blood or just finds blood fascinating.

Great photos and pictures. Covers blood like an informational pictogram with history, science and horror.

Very informative and I learned a lot. I read this because of a school requirement and I am glad I did.

This is a wonderful book for the whole family. HP does an amazing job balancing a lot of facts with fun stories. We bought some copies for friends and family...as well as clients. Highly recommend it.

If I still had a classroom, my kids were still little, or I had grandkids this book would be well read. About the Author

Nicolae Klepper, born in Romania, came to America with his parents at the outbreak of World War II, at the age of 12, and settled in New York. Later, returning from a tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Europe, he decided to devote his career to international business. I haven't read the entire book yet, actually I'm still pretty early in, but I bought this for research as I'm writing a story that relies heavily on Romanian history and culture, and I've already learned so much vital information. Writers, this is the one you want.

My grandparents were immigrants from Iasi, Romania and I read this book in an attempt to learn more about my cultural background. I was not disappointed! This book provides a full history (although the changes politically occur so frequently they become difficult to follow) with focus on the key figures in politics, as well as in literature. The stories of different regions of Romania - Moldavia, Transylvania, Wallachia etc. - are covered. This book is a very readable and very comprehensive introduction to Romanian history.

Readers will learn a lot about Romania, a country about which very little is knownin the West, outside of its Dracula mythology which is so popular nowadays.

AMAZING....30 YEARS AFTER LOSING 50 POUNDS ON THIS DIET I HAVE MAINTAINED MY GOAL WEIGHT WITHIN 10 POUNDSMy heading says it all. I went on this diet at least 30 years ago when a condensed version was published in Cosmopolitan Magazine. My brother and his wife had invited me to go the beach with them but told me we all had to diet for the week that we were there. They went on a diet where you purchased the meals and I went on this diet because I had just received the magazine and I didn't want to spend money on replacement meals. I was shocked at the end of the week that I wasn't craving my old foods. I never looked back. I went from 180 pounds to 130 pounds. I was in my 30's at the time and had always been overweight and had tried many diets. I have basically followed the principals of the plan and I weight 140 pounds. This diet changed my life. I am the G Type and one of the first things I did was stop eating breakfast because as the book said, it made me hungry all day to eat breakfast. Get the book, take the quiz and follow your plan!

I really like this book. I know there are lots of people who say it is quackery, but that's okay by me. Whether or not you know what body type you are, it may or may not matter, but what I found it got me back to losing weight. I know, just eat 1200 calories and you'll lose. Well, that is not true. I don't like it when people say that. One diet or plan doesn't fit all. There are people out there who struggle with weight loss, it doesn't come off easy. I never had a weight problem till menopause. I tried all kinds of weight loss. Cutting out sugar, processed foods, etc. and they all worked okay for a while. I was gestational diabetic and carry the gene. I knew I had to do something. I tried Paleo, lost a few pounds, but really caused my gallbladder act up something terrrible, plus constipation so bad, no amount of prunes or laxatives worked. My BP was going up gradually, so I tried the DASH plan. Felt pretty good on it, lost 9 lbs and stopped. Had some hypoglycemia from it. Although my BP dropped some in just a few days. Was pleased with that. Then, followed the 1200 cal diabetic plan. Couldn't lose any, fluctuated back and forth with 1/2 pound. Very frustrating. Then I found this book, 4 different body types and 1200 cal plan for each one. I seemed to be T-type by a bit over the A-type. I liked the T-type plan better and decided to go with it. It has a higher protein then the others. It has worked. I am losing again. Most likely I was eating too much fruit and grains, even though we need them, to lose, I must have needed to reduce them some, even though I was keeping the carb count around 30 a meal. I am so pleased and I feel really good.I know he says keep the hours in between like clockwork. I don't. No snacking. I do, but only at bedtime, I have to or I wouldn't be able to sleep. I will wake up at 4am with my tummy wanting food. I ignore it and eventually go back to sleep. I can fast till about 11am.He says, if you crave it don't eat it. Don't know if I buy that one or not. I try and listen to my body. Vegetarian, very bad for me. I digest food so fast, no bean, greens, tofu stays with me for long, then I start to get shaky.I love eggs, I have my own chickens, I love fish and other meats. I love my sprouted ww bread. I love my raw milk. I get all that with this plan, and am losing weight. These foods are very satisfying to me and stay with me a long time. I can get hungry and don't get shaky or weak, so if I can't eat right away, I am okay.I am sure there is a plan for you in this book. It is well worth taking a look at it and giving it a try. If the body type plan for you doesn't work, try one that looks like if would fit you and give it a whirl. They are all geared around 1200 calories.I just may help those that are stuck on their weight.There is also an exercise plan to go along with it if you can do it, that seems logical. I don't do it, I walk, do some squats, and stretch mostly.However, if you find yourself obsessively craving foods, then you probably shouldn't eat that type. I need protein, but don't obsess over it. I do crave bread a bit, but a little satisfies me.I no longer have gallbladder or heartburn issues(on the most part, very rare now), feel good, have a bit more clarity and stamina, and am losing weight.So, don's listen to those that so rudely say, any diet will work if you eat less calories then you take it. They don't know. Everyone is different. You may have a medical condition. You should have that looked at.But I can easily stay on this way of eating for life, with a few adjustments. Just don't be so strict where you would be bound to fail. Adjust it according to your body.

I've tried "The Fit for Life" Diet (food combining), the "Eat Right for Your Type" Diet (based on blood type), and the no-grain diet. None of these has worked the way Dr. Abravanel's body-type diet works! By means of an easy "quiz" offered in this book, I was able easily to determine my body type. The section on my body type was a real eye opener! It discussed exactly my craving for salty, greasy snacks like potato chips, and other symptoms of my depleted but over-stimulated adrenals.Because of previous adverse reactions to milk products and wheat, I was avoiding these. As it turns out, I needed these, balanced with other nutrients, actually to lose weight. I now have no adverse reactions to these products. And, because I believed I shouldn't eat fruit with meals, I was rarely eating fruit. Now I eat much more, and really am enjoying the fresh produce of my regional area.The first week I noticed my waistline coming back! Instead of losing weight all over, including my face, (Yesterday I bought 4 size-small belts, which size I haven't worn in almost 20 years. I just turned 65,) Although I lost the jowls below my jaws, the previous recessed tissue under my eyes filled in and my skin looks wonderful, and full in a youthful way! Thank you, Dr. Abravanel!

I have always believed the notion of fat makes humans fat to be a fallacy because I've come to the conclusion that carbs, especially simple carbs contributes to weight gain. I have done a lot of research on this, for example, reading books like good calories, bad calories and many other anti carbohydrate books. In short, I have gone on low carb diets, and had little to no weight loss on them. I am the type of person who does not give up easy and did some research and came across this book and discovered some fascinating things; I am body type A, which according to the book; fat intake makes me fat and I am better off on a higher carb, moderate protein, low fat diet. So 3 weeks ago (1/21/2014) I put it to the test: so far things are going great; I have lost 15 pounds and have about 30 more to go. I know using yourself as an example is anecdotal, however, the book is worth a try if you have tried other diet plans and have experienced little to no success.

I've been a Perl programmer for many years but often forget how powerful and useful one-liners can be. The author's light and humorous style is a great introduction to the power and productivity of Perl one-liners. A great book for beginners and seasoned programmers alike.

There’s a certain cachet that comes with being able to hack up Linux, Darwin or UNIX boxes. Being able to write scripts is immensely helpful, but there’s always that knowing glance, that little nod, that holdover from the days of “Name That Tune”, where instead of saying “I can name that tune in one note”, the command line geek smiles and says "I can take care of that task with one line”.Granted, those “one-liners" are often rather involved. Lots of pipes and tees and redirects, to be sure, but somehow, they can actually be said to be “one line fixes” or “one line scripts”. I currently work in an environment where Perl is still in active rotation. I used to write CGI programs in Perl once upon a time (and still maintain some of them to this day). I’ve always appreciated the ability to do things in one line, and in many ways, it’s a neat way to learn some of the more oddball syntax options of both the shell and a given utility, and actually put them into use. All this is my building up to the fact that, when I saw the listing for Peteris Krumins “Perl One-Liners: 130 Programs that Get Things Done”, it just begged for me to say “Oh please, let me review this!”The back cover makes the following claim:"Save time and sharpen your coding skills as you learn to conquer those pesky tasks in a few precisely placed keystrokes with Perl One-Liners."So how does it stack up?Chapter 1 is meant to help orient the reader towards the idea of a one-line fix or utility. Fact is, a lot of what we do are one-offs, or are tasks that we may need to do one time, but for dozens or even hundred of files. Some knowledge of Perl is helpful, but many of the commands can just be typed in as is, examine the changes made, and work backwards. Windows users need to do a little tweaking to some of the commands, and Appendix B is here to help you do exactly that. Also, if you see examples that make you want to scratch your head (trust me, you will), there’s always perldoc, which will explain those areas you struggle with.Chapter 2 looks at spacing, or more to the point, giving you control over just how much you want or can see. Each example explains the steps and the actions each command will perform. Various command line options like -e allow the user to iterate a while loop on every line in a file, so passing a variable parameter sets up an entire while loop. Lots of fascinating variations, each one doing something interesting, some easy to understand, and some bring cryptic to a new level ("perl -00pe0” anyone? Yes, Peteris explains it, and yes, it is pretty cool).Chapter 3 covers Numbering, and a variety of quick methods to play and tweak with numbering lines and words. The “$." special variable gets covered (thinking it might have something to do with the line number of whatever you are interacting with? You’d be right!), as well as a game called "Perl golfing", which I guess is the Perl equivalent of my aforementioned “name that tune”.Chapter 4 deal with Calculations. Want to do on the fly counting? Want to shuffle elements? Figure out if numbers are prime or non-prime? Determine a date based on an input? This chapter’s got you covered.Chapter 5 focuses on Arrays and Strings. Want to create your open password generator? Figure out ranges? Determine what a decimal value is in Hex, and vice versa? Oooh, I know, how about creating strings of various characteristics to use for text input (come on testers, you were all thinking it ;) )? Maybe generating your own personal offset code to semi-encrypt your messages sounds like fun. There’s plenty here to help you do that. Of course, if that last one seems interesting, the next chapter offers some better options ;).Chapter 6 deals with Text Conversion and Substitution. Apply base64 encoding and decoding (OK, much more effective, but maybe not quite as fun as making your own raw version), creating HTML or deconstructing HTML, creating or breaking up URLs, and a bunch of operators that allow for all sorts of interesting string manipulations.Chapter 7 covers Selectively Printing and Deleting Lines. Typically, a one liner that can selectively print can be tweaked to selectively remove, and vice versa. Look for and print lines that repeat, or those that match a particular pattern (and of course, apply similar rules to remove lines that meet your criteria as well).Chapter 8 brings us to Useful Regular Expressions, and Perl has a monster of a regular expression engine. Rather than give an exhaustive rundown, Peteris focuses on regex patterns that we might use, well, regularly. Finding and matching IP addresses and subnet masks, parsing HTTP headers, validating email addresses, extracting and changing values and many others. This chapter alone is worth the price of purchase.The book ends with three Appendices. Appendix A gives a listing of Perl’s Special Variables, and how to use them in their context (with more one liner examples). Appendix B is all about Perl One-Liners on Windows, including setting up Perl, getting Bash on Windows, running the one liners from the command prompt or PowerShell, and the oddities that makes Windows, well, Windows, and how to leverage the book to work in that ever so fascinating environment. Appendix C is basically a print out of all the Perl one-liners in the book. It can be downloaded and examined as a quick “how do I do that again?” from one file.Bottom Line:This is a tinkerer’s dream. What’s more, its a book that you can grab at any old time and play with for the fun of it, and yes, this book is FUN. You may be an old hand at Perl, you may be a novice, or maybe you’ve never touched a line of Perl code in your life. If you want to accomplish some irksome tasks, it’s a good bet there’s something in here that will help you do what you need to. If the exact match isn’t to be found, it takes very few jumps to get to something you can use and work with, novice and guru alike. You might think it would be ridiculous to say to yourself “hey, I have a few minutes to spare, I think I’ll try out some Perl One-Liners for fun”. Maybe I’m weird, but that’s exactly what I find myself doing. It’s the coders equivalent to a Facebook game, but be warned, a few minutes can become a couple of hours if you’re not careful. Yes, that’s hyperbole, and at the same time, it isn’t. Perl One-Liners is seriously fun, and a wonderful “tech book” for the short attention span readers among us. You may find yourself turning to it again and again. My advice, just roll with it :).

Perl one-liners are an important part of its power and flexibility. The ability to process a file quickly without having to write a program is often really useful. Any Perl programmers should take the time to get to know the command like switches that make this possible. This book is a pretty good introduction to this way of using Perl.So why only three stars? Well, I have a couple of reservations about the book. Firstly, there are a few technical errors which the editors should have caught. For example, a few times the author refers to "array context" where he means "list context". The difference between arrays and lists is often difficult for beginners to master and it doesn't help when books blur the distinction.My other reservation is with the programs themselves. The book boasts "130 programs that get things done". But I think they have had to stretch things a bit to get to that number. One program might be "print lines that match a pattern". Then the next program will be "print lines that don't match a pattern". I'm not sure that inverting the logic in a one-liner is enough of a difference to justify counting it separately. Sometimes you'll come across two or three pages of examples all of which are only tiny permutations of each other.But it's good to see publishers bringing out books on Perl. And this is certainly an area of Perl that hasn't received much coverage before. I just think it's a rather thin concept to spin out to a book. Even this stretched, it's a rather thin book (140 pages - 50 of which are appendices). It might have been better as a cheap Kindle-only publication.
