About the Author

Dan Malloy is the youngest of the three Malloy bothers from Ventura County, California. Growing up in California with a brother and boyfriend who were surfers, this book jogged a lot of memories. I loved that the authors connected with so many people on the coast who were living in a sustainable way and happy about it. The DVD was fun. I felt like I was on the beach and next to the surf without many people about. Just like it used to feel going up the CA coast and exploring the cool, foggy, salty-smelling, damp sand beaches. What a treat! I am a big fan of Kanoa Zimmermann's photography. Well done.

I was under the impression that the book came with a DVD, no such luck. I really did enjoy the book, but the DVD would have been nice.

Awesome book along with the DVD that came with it. Glad Patagonia clothing recommended it! Looking forward to visiting California soon!

While I am a fan of the Malloy brothers in general--they have made some epic surf films and 180 South is one of my favorite documentaries-- this was a big disappointment. I realize that not all of the brothers were involved, but I bought it based on the strength of the Malloy "brand." The film seems very unfinished and kind of cobbled together, as if the team ran out of money or interest, and slammed together whatever was left. Particularly disappointing was no real treatment or appreciation for the day to day bike touring (the substitution of the comicaly intendended, but cheesy, studio simulations drove my family from the room). Some of the sequences and stories are very good and well filmed, but as a whole, it is weak. Sorry to sound harsh, but for the price, I expected a lot more.

I had paged through this at a bookstore, the writing and style was a bit sophomoric, but I loved the concept. Based on the reviews, I decided to give it a try, was hopeful the dvd would be worthwhile. It's not. I like off the wall, low key films to some say a fault, this dvd was beyond anything I would even subject myself to. Please do not compare this to Endless Summer, as there is NONE.

With Endless Summer being one of my absolute favorite movies of all time, this video hit home for me. With incredible imagery and scenes of the California Coast, I thought the Malloy brothers did a great job with the project. With some comical encounters and unpredictable adventures I really enjoyed this film and have passed it along to many of my friends who have also enjoyed it. This video shows Cali in a way no one else could and I loved it.

Love the concept of this book. It's a wonderful adventure they went on and I love the dedication to cycling, farmers, and the slower way of life that they celebrate. The book is on the shorter side, but is chock full of things and I was impressed. Would definitely recommend!

Just received and read my copy (thank you Patagonia Books ) Being a native of Northern Coastal California for the last 65 years I can say this book paints a beautiful and accurate portrait of the diversity and health of rural northern California.

I am an English teacher constantly searching for books that will inspire a love for reading, and it seems that wholesome books for older elementary and junior high boys are the most difficult to find. Brady's Trapped in a Video Game is perfect for this group! As the narrator's voice becomes clear, the story is undoubtedly relatable, humorous, and engaging! When I finished the book, I found myself thinking "That's it?!" I'm sure I echo the sentiments of other readers when I say that I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I will definitely recommend this book to students in my own school!

I knew my son would like this book. The humor on the first page is exactly the sort of thing that makes my son smile and share.My daughter already loves reading, but my son is very picky about what he wants to read, so almost any book is a gamble. He likes Judy Moody books and Stink books, but he is not interested in many of the books targeted for boys his age. My wife and I were on a mission to find a book that would stir an excitement in him the way my daughter is excited when she reads.Trapped In A Video Game is that book. We gave it to him on his birthday. He was wary because we have given him books before and the track record is not good. I encouraged him to read just the first page and then make his judgment. I knew he would like the joke on the first page. While he was reading the first page, I left the house to run an errand. By the time I returned he was about a third of the way through the book. He loved it.That was about two weeks ago. Since then, he has said the name of the book about fifty times and read the book about three or four times. Yep. It's one of those. One of those books he carries with him when we are on a drive or running errands around town. One of those books that he puts down somewhere and then frantically asks, "Where's Trapped In A Video Game?!?!"Oh, yeah. I forgot to tell you that my daughter loves it, too! She has read every Harry Potter book, almost every Rick Riordan book, at least half of "Erin Hunter's" Warriors books, every Land of Stories book by Colfer, and several dozen other books. She loves this book. She and my son have had sibling fights over this book.We just got Trapped In A Video Game 2 from Amazon yesterday. Let the fight over who reads it first begin...This is a great book. My kids look forward to reading the rest of the series and Dustin Brady's other books and future books. Keep writing, Mr. Brady.

My 9 (almost 10 year old) LOVES this book! He hasn't been much of a reader but this is the FIRST book he reads without prodding. He talks about it a lot and always tells me what happened. The chapters aren't too long or overwhelming for early chapter readers. An easy read. It's refreshing to find a fun, adventure book without a lot of "dark" themes. A rare find!

Our night-time routine with our daughter and son (ages 7 & 5), is to read a book, watch a couple YouTube videos, talk about our day, and go to bed. This is the first book that had my kids begging to skip videos and talking time to just read a few more chapters. It's intense, but not scary, and exciting but not overstimulating, and my kids area always anxious to hear what is going to happen next.

My son is eight, so I've started reading him older kid books in order to get him more excited about reading. I went with some classics like, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" - some newer ones like, "Pottymouth and Stoopid" - he has enjoyed them to a certain extent, but this book captivated him. He would beg for "just one more chapter!" - even I found myself enjoying it. After finishing this book, we both knew we had to get the 2nd book, so we are looking forward to that one. If you have a kid who's into video games and action (what kid isn't nowadays?) then I'd encourage you to give this a shot.

This is not a picture book, nor is it in comic-book format; it's a novel, but clearly more for late-elementary grades. Sixth-grader Jesse is the hero who cares little for videogames, yet his pal Eric's craze over an early-release game unwittingly leads to the eponymous sci-fi dilemma. The story is funny and innocent, with not even the clichéd angst of any school crush; the focus is on the nearly unrelenting action. Any subversive tone is found in what some readers may consider a humorously gross element briefly surfacing in the plot.Compared to my more usual adult-level (or even young-adult) fare, this was a quick read for me, and proved to be sheer escapism -- switching my mind to kid mode, I could see the appeal. It reminded me a lot of the "Spy Kids"-type movies. A severe (yet G-rated) drill sergeant stole the show for me here. What made me smile (and felt oddly liberating) was the basic writing style with its onomatopoeia -- that, along with an ending that leaves room for a sequel, is undoubtedly meant to appeal to young, hesitant readers.

My 13 year old son is having difficulty in AR and I bought this based on the reviews. He couldn't put it down and would all me if he could read more often than usual. It's on the lower side of his AR level but at least he is reading! I bought all for books in the series top get him to read more. He loves them!

So this books in not for anyone that is looking to create physical and tangible products. Diarrhea of the word processor resulted in a 365 page definition of a lean start-up, where it could have been boiled down to less than 100 pages (minus 1-star for waste...Distill it down to an A3 using Lean Thinking). So let me save you some time.1. An entrepreneur is a person who creates a business around a product or service under conditions of "extreme uncertainty", and should ascend the vision-strategy-product pyramid. (Google: Start with Why TEDx - Ries redefines that concept)2. A start-up is a phase of the entrepreneur's organization, tasked with the goal of reducing the condition of "extreme uncertainty", and finding a sustainable business model (Google: Lean Business Model Canvas).3. Use customer discovery (class) and validated learning (method) to find a sustainable business model around your product or service idea. Assuming you are reading the other product reviews, I'll try not to duplicate what I've noticed other reviewers are writing about The Lean Startup by Eric Ries.I will say this though:o Eric tells a lot of stories to make his points, and focuses as much on convincing us to buy into the Lean Startup principles as he does teaching them. I like the stories though, and I bet I would really like this guy if I were to meet him.o Eric sometimes gushes a bit about startups which are so young that I wonder if it is too early to call them a success. For example, Ries spends over 3 pages talking about Obama and Dodd-Frank, and praises the fledgling (at that time) Consumer Federal Protection Bureau for CONSIDERING his suggestion of starting their agency (with its $500 million budget) like it is a lean startup.Again, these are 3 pages talking about how the CFPB *could* use lean startup methodologies, not about how they have actually used them.Given the extremely limited usefulness of anecdotes such as these, you can't help but wonder if Eric in those moments more focused on trying to put people's names in a book than he is at giving readers something solid to benefit from.At any rate, it's still a great book and definitely worth the money.That said, if you want more of the HOW TOs of Lean Startup, I'm currently reading both Steve Blank's The Startup Owners Manual and Ash Maurya's Running Lean, and while I'm not finished with either of them yet, I can definitely tell you they take Eric's teachings to the next level -- and then some.

I bought into the hype of this so called "bible" of entrepreneurship after being force fed with it in innovation and entrepreneurship classes at university. It is ranked as the quintessential entrepreneurship book/movement of our time, but let me warn you, it's not. Don't fall into this half baked, candy coated approach to 'successful' business creation.This book could've easily been a 2 page essay but instead it is a 300 page college-esque (and very boring) essay. It also feels like an ad for Eric Ries' unheard-of internet businesses. There is nothing Lean about the Lean Startup, it should be called the Learn Startup instead. The Lean Startup approach to business creation kills disruption and true innovation, it is a guide for building a catered (incrementally improved at best) business. If Henry Ford followed this we would indeed have faster horses. Read Thiel's From Zero to One instead. This is garbage.

The author represents the MBA approach to Bay Area startups. With a Yale BA and a Harvard MBA he has been the object of a lot of press coverage on his theory of lean startups and how it can be applied in more traditional business settings. He advice is to not waste years trying to make a business work. Kill it and move on. He goes into detail on how he did not follow this advice, wasting thousands of hours producing a product that was not well received because the market research did not ask the right questions and the product's users were not asked what they wanted. Being stubborn, the author and his partners kept at it until they stumbled onto the right answers after several tries. I guess the author is saying he has learned his lesson now. His latest startup is a people's stock exchange not beholden to short term gains.

About the Author

St. Therese of Lisieux, also known as "Therese of the Child Jesus" and "The Little Flower", was the last of nine children born to Louis and Zelie Martin, at France in 1873. Anyone,Catholic or not, should read this book about Ste. Therese of Lisieux. I actually read about her in another book. The small amount I had read about her, made me want to know more. I became driven to find books about her. There are other books that should be read in conjunction with "The Story of a Soul..."If there is one who can end any of the books that can be read along with this book, or just end reading this book alone and feel that thus far they have lived their lives in anywhere near a compassionate manner, they are lying not only to themselves but to all they meet. I have never read such a book that caused me to cry, laugh, and pray throughout. READ THIS BOOK! Your life will change, mine has!

"The Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux" is, in my opinion, one of the greatest of the autobiographical writings of the Saints... one of the most important Catholic books of the last 200 years... and a definite "Must Read" for all Catholics. I always have a copy of it lying around... and I read through it leisurely... never rushing through it or trying to finish it as quickly as possible. When I do finish reading it, it doesn't tend to be too long before I start reading it again. I not only have it in "book" form - I also have it on my Kindle, so I'm able to have it on me at all times via the Kindle app for my iPhone.The "Tan Classics" paperback edition is fantastic. Great quality... it's able to hold up to heavy use. The printing/text is very easy and comfortable to read. The cover is nice, and is also quite sturdy.Bottom-line: "Yes" - you should buy and read this book!

If you are looking for a way to challenge yourself (as your spiritual practice should be already doing) this book is for you. The heart of this book is a message of surrender, sacrifice, humility, and LOVE.The Story of a Soul provides the reader with a living example of what it means to truly live for God alone. If you allow her to, Saint Therese of Lisieux will show you what it actually looks like to love God with ones whole heart in the most humble and simplest of ways. This book is published by many publishers but ICS, which is the publisher for the Carmelites, has the best edition of this book. I've read the book before and this translation is excellent. It is like reading an entirely different book. The study part has information that helps fill in parts she doesn't talk about and gives short thought provoking text. I highly recommend it.

What a beautifully written and charming book! Filled with heartwarming tenderness! I like this version much better than another one I have, b/c the language and grammatical style is so much more smooth, flowery and poetic. The other version is choppy, dull and plain sounding. This version reflects St. Therese childlike innocence and sweetness much more vividly.

I have to admit from other reviews I expected to get more out of this. It's not an easy read, at least not for me. Probably because I want to actually "get" the spiritual meaning from the book. I'm really surprised that Gretchen Rubin (The Happiness Project) fell in love with St. Therese as I believe Gretchen claims to be atheist (correct me if I'm wrong). It is very much a book that Catholics would relate to, but I'm not sure others from Christian denominations would be able to appreciate. I'm still wading through it (almost done though!) It's the kind of book I might pick up years from now and get more out of it. It's that kind of book.

She was my mother in laws patron saint. Her name was Theresa too....I sent this book to my husband who is encarcerated and he loved it so much.

What a moving story of dedication which I will never be able to comprehend. Please order this and read it. You won't be sorry.
