I was very excited to find a children's book about Unitarian Universalism since there aren't a lot out there. Its a cute title and cover and the content of the book does give a concise introduction to Unitarian Universalism. However, there isn't anything interesting or entertaining about it. It presents the facts in a simple way but its kind of boring. I think that the DRE at my church could write a much better book!

Great book.

I'm using this book for reference in the 4th/5th grade curriculum I'm writing, and it's too young for them, but still very good. Good for introduction and exploration of our unique faith tradition. -Rev. Christina

This is a good book for starting to talk to kids about UU. It clears up a lot of questions I remember having as newcomer to the faith.

Great book for kids growing up UU. It is also a great book to help others understand what Unitarian Universalism is about.

Obviously nobody is going to buy this unless you are raising your kid as a UU. If you are, it's a good book. No more to say.

We are looking for a book to give to visitors at our church. I thought this would be a good book for children. After reading it, I think it would be great for adults too. Very good explanation of Unitarian Universalism without being too detailed (or boring). And who doesn't like pictures in their books?

Great book, with a simple explanation of Unitarian Universalism. Love it!

God without Parts: Divine Simplicity and the Metaphysics of God's Absoluteness, by James E. Dolezal

Review

"Dr. James Dolezal's treatment of divine simplicity, which provides a defense of this doctrine in perhaps its strongest form, is a first-rate piece of work . . . [It] is the best full-length philosophical treatment of divine simplicity that I know."-Paul HelmTeaching FellowRegent College, Vancouver"James E. Dolezal has authored a philosophically rigorous and theologically thorough defense of divine simplicity, and he has done so for positive reasons. For Dolezal, the whole rationale for defending the simplicity of God is to assure that we actually come to know, though not fully comprehend, God as he truly is--the God of reason and revelation, the God of the Christian philosophical and theological tradition. Dolezal has made a very admirable and extremely significant contribution to the discussion of God's simplicity." -Thomas G. Weinandy, OFM, Cap.United States Conference of Catholic Bishops"At a time when the simplicity of God has fallen on hard times, James Dolezal does a fine job of navigating current objections to this central aspect of theology proper. In particular, Dolezal shows the intimate relationship between those who would affirm God's absolute character, and an affirmation of divine simplicity. He brings Aquinas' affirmation of simplicity into the contemporary debate in a way that Thomas himself might have done."-K. Scott OliphintWestminster Theological Seminary"James Dolezal offers an exceptionally rich, lucid, and creative insight into the meaning and significance of the doctrine of God's simplicity. Engaging in a lively, sincere discussion with the major contemporary opponents and with representatives of the broad theological tradition, he gives not only a thorough introduction, but also advances the debate: Dolezal translates the discussion about ontotheology into an analytical framework and suggests a new solution for the compatibility of God's simplicity and freedom."-Harm GorisTilburg University"God without Parts is a valuable contribution to the field of philosophical-theology. Looking to the thought of Thomas Aquinas, James Dolezal carefully presents the logical coherence of the doctrine of divine simplicity, cogently illustrating how the doctrine is a necessary ontological condition for affirming God's absoluteness with regard to his existence, essence, knowledge, and will. This work will be a welcome addition to the libraries of philosophers and theologians alike."-Gregory T. DoolanThe Catholic University of America --Wipf and Stock PublishersDolezal's book is a delight to read — insightful, well-researched, and clearly written. . . . Most especially, it is a prophetic work, providing a resounding call to recover and reaffirm the absolute God of the Christian tradition who is not pieced together from univocal fragments of human thought but is rather the transcendent Creator who has formed us in his own image and likeness. The Thomist God without Parts deals with an important topic in philosophical theology, and anyone interested in the fate of the [doctrine of divine simplicity] should read it. . . . an instructive study of a difficult problem, written in scrupulously sober prose. Heythrop Journal This book is a good and useful addition to the literature on the Doctrine of Divine Simplicity. Faith and Philosophy God without Parts is meticulously researched, cogently argued, and eminently readable. . . . both an excellent study of the historic doctrine of divine simplicity and a rigorous defense of the doctrine with the contemporary philosophical and theological context. Philosophia Christi James Dolezal s work not only manages to capture the wide-ranging significance of [divine simplicity], but also skillfully exposits the Christian tradition by leveraging the traditional [doctrine] to profitably engage contemporary philosophical suspicions. Scottish Bulletin of Evangelical Theology [T]he book represents the most thorough and up-to-date explication and defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity from within the Protestant tradition. Dolezal has given us a fine example of Reformed philosophical theology: historically informed, confessionally observant, ecumenically oriented, and analytically rigorous. After discovering Reformed theology, one of the things that I came across was divine simplicity - and to say the least it was counterintuitive. Nonetheless, it demanded from my end the need to know and understand what that was. This book right here has helped clear out most of the fog.In the span of 7 chapters - with the first generally being a historical survey of affirmations and criticisms of the doctrine of divine simplicity (DDS) - the author clearly explains DDS, with the end result being the edification of the reader. In all of this, though, it is not the lightest of reads. Chapter 2, "Simplicity and the Models of Composition," is in my opinion the most interesting and quite weighty. This book, therefore, deserves a broader audience and proves how Catholic and Protestant authors were generally in sync on matters of theology proper.

Dolezal is clearly very intelligent. His evaluations are broad and thorough. His review and analysis is deep. So, perhaps this is a small point, but it is the subject of his book (I read on kindle):He quotes and takes to task (Hughes) a Christian Philosopher. Hughes confuses DDS (the Doctrine of Divine Simplicity) as the opposite of God being conceptually complex. It is right it agree that God conceptually is not a simple matter, but a complex one. However, God not being made up of parts that make him God, or being dependent on separate 'things' that might compose who God is as God is DDS. Our Triune God is independent and thus simple. It seems strange that Dolezal would include this material if not to show the confusion on the matter, but he doesn't address it. Was this too complex for the publisher, or editors to catch? There are other authors who are clearer on the topic of DDS, but they go in the direction of Neo-Orthodoxy. I appreciate that Dolezal does not confuse the Trinity economically with the Trinity ontologically.

“THE DOCTRINE OF DIVINE simplicity has no shortage of detractors in the modern philosophical-theological milieu. Indeed, its austere and sometimes shocking demands grate against the modern proclivity for a God that is more easily understood, more manageable, more like us.”

This is an extremely good presentation of the classical doctrine of the simplicity of God as rooted in Scripture. This is an intellectually satisfying presentation that cuts across denominational lines. An intelligible and coherent doctrine of God that squares Scripture with reason. God without Parts is a great antidote to the post-modern alternatives.

An excellent discussion of the nature of God, with a brief review of past discussions and a clear indication of the implications involved in the question of God's simplicity, i.e. in his essential nature of not being composed of parts, nor contingent in any way.

This book was thoroughly enjoyable. Having listened through Dr. Dolezal's lectures that he gave at SCRBPC, this book was an appropriate next step in my study of the doctrine of God. Dr. Dolezal is clear, and his writing style is succinct and memorable. This book is a necessary study in any doctrine of God curriculum.

The book is superb. Great book! Albeit highly philosophical.

A great help book for teens and young adults...wish this had been around 35 years ago!

Great tool for under represented.

I got an ARC of this book.I am not so far removed from being a trans teen that I have forgotten what it is like. So I thought I would check out a book aimed at teens (except for a weird chapter at the end aimed at parents of trans kids, not teens). I was hoping that I would find something that would have helped me when I was a trans teen, but I was let down.I have heard of these authors before, they were interviewed in another book I have read recently. Their interview was one of the few that stuck out to me when I was reading that book, so I was pretty excited to see that they had a book out. I thought they would have a great deal to say that would really get to me. Instead I read a lot of fluff and some really awful sections.Lets start with the awful: the book was inconsistent, focused greatly on one aspect at the detriment of others, and offered dangerous advice. The dangerous advice was the part that got me though. I expected two trans people to be able to realize what they were telling young trans teens to do with their transition was dangerous. At one point in the book they talk about binding with TAPE. They go on about how a transman has made tape that is better to bind with than normal tape. They do not discuss the dangers of binding with tape at all. Later in the book, one of the write-ins mentioned in more detail about how dangerous binding with tape is. The write-in in ANOTHER section of the book contradicts the authors with accurate information. I was floored. Binding safety should have been basic trans 101. A quick google search will tell you that ace bandages and tape are dangerous, especially in long term bind situations, using during a show for drag is slightly different though there are still risks. The book would randomly have write-in testimonials, but in weird chapters. They never added anything and for all I know they were all faked, I don't believe they were, but it was just so random and plopped in that it felt off. My biggest issue with the book boils down to the focus of the book. The chapter on binding, packing, and padding (no mention of tucking at all, which is also odd) was shorter than the chapter on what to do if someone wants to interview you on TV. I was literally the poster boy for trans youth when I was younger. I had my face on posters, I was in newspapers, I traveled to give speeches. The other trans youth around me, didn't. So why is there such a focus on interviews and media rules (one must always have a pre-approved positive message that all trans people can agree with so be sure to check with this ONE group before you say anything) when that isn't the norm that trans teens will face. Including it was great, but having it be one of the longest chapter when the basic social transition stuff was glossed over was awful. More dangerous advice being: It is ALWAYS better to come out than hide. That is not the case. Some people staying stealth or not coming out makes them safer, which the authors admit, but then repeatedly through the rest of the book romanticize the idea of coming out being this magical event and how everyone should come out and how bad stuff can be easily remedied. There is a small section, one or two sentences, about how people have been attacked or kicked out, but the bad again is glossed over. Has Brandon Teena been forgotten? Has Gwen Araujo been relegated to a lifetime movie? What about me (raped, attacked, beaten, and abused by family and classmates alike for coming out as trans and transitioning at 15)? What about all of the homeless trans kids? What about the whole culture of trans women who have turned to sex work to survive? So many bad things can happen, but this book made it seem like they were in the past. I'm not saying someone shouldn't come out because of these bad things, but don't pretend it doesn't happen. Don't gloss over it. Kids can and will get hurt after coming out, but without that coming out no one stands a chance of a happy life. Coming out is a bold, brave, and powerful move of self-acceptance and a push forward for trans rights. I love seeing all the trans kids that are coming out now. I love seeing that my transition is being pushed away from the norm. I am fiercely protective of those kids. So this idea that coming out is all sunshine and rainbows and you should always come out, is dangerous. I don't want these kids hurt or homeless because they followed the glib advice of two adults. A quick google search, a blog on Tumblr, or checking Facebook for trans groups would give all the information of this book and then some. This book may help some people, but it wouldn't have helped me. I was the only trans kid in my school and in my immediate area. I could only see other trans people once a year at a conference or at a support group that was an hour away. This book still wouldn't have helped me. I was given all of the information this book provided from someone who didn't identify as trans (at the time, he does now) in a five minute conversation. It reaffirms that community is wonderful and necessary, it repeatedly says there is no right or wrong way to be trans (while focusing on a very transsexual binary experience of transitioning and no mention of how clothing can work). So this isn't the worst trans book I have read, but it should not be your only source of information. Seek out another trans person. There are a lot of online big brother/big sister/big sibling programs. I have multiple "younger" brothers that I have mentored over the years. They are all older than me, but I am older in trans years. We share, we have a community. They pass on the stuff we have learned as a group and as individuals to others. All of that works better than this book which is so basic that if you have watched modern TV or read a YA you would already know half of it.

I got a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Please note: I'm not trans, so please take what I say about this book with a grain of salt and also go read some reviews of this book by trans people. That said, I think this book is a really great recourse for both trans teens and their parents. I really liked how the Fishers went through different issues that can come up and different questions trans teens can have in each chapter. I loved the chapters on dysphoria and surgery the most because I felt like they had a lot of practical information. I learned a great deal about dysphoria, which was really good for me as I've not researched the topic much.I don't think this book is perfect. I wish that the authors had taken the time to talk about more pronouns, especially ones that aren't currently the norm like ze/hir or others like that. I did also feel like a couple chapters were a little repetitive, but maybe that was just the ARC I read. I also felt like the books information on binding seemed a little incomplete, but like I said I'm not trans so I would recommend looking to other reviews as well as mine.Overall though I thought that this book could be a great recourse for trans teens and I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.Â

As I'm no longer a trans teen, I picked up this book to see if it was a good recommendation for the younger trans people in my wider community. I actually found that it would not just be beneficial for teens /in particular/ but for anyone beginning their transition and looking for safe, supportive, and honest words. The empowerment and visibility garnered from this book is immeasurable. The emphasis on a closeness of community (like the one I am part of) leaves an emotional impression that will inspire those in need to reach out and find people who will provide long lasting support, solidarity, and friendship. As Fox and Owl Fisher point out, a book cannot replace a loving support system, but it can fuel a fire of confidence and provide information and advice that brings an astute awareness and reassurance to anyone struggling with their identity.I also found that passages from the section addressing parents of trans teens useful as my own dad is still not as understanding as I would like.. The honest sharing of experiences and suggestions to approach the situation have given me a new perspective on my own life and family which I was not expecting. This book doesn't take itself too seriously though, after all it's a 'survival guide' not a 'depressing facts guide', and it's certainly an enjoyable and affirming read for anyone open to learning more about the trans experience, for their own benefit or to be a good ally for someone in their life! Thanks Fox and Owl Fisher, the world has been waiting for a book like this!

** I'm not trans, but as a future educator/ librarian I do make it a point to educate myself thoroughly on trans issues. I loved this book. I think its very educational, and could do a lot of help for someone struggling to understand or someone struggling with themselves. I loved the format and all the resources that were provided through out the book. I think this book is going to be very important and could help a few kids along the way.

How I wish this resource would have been available when I was teen! This is an earnest and useful guide for teens (not just trans teens) written by knowledgeable and down-to-earth people in a relatable and approachable way. If you are a teen or have a teen, this is crucial, informative material.

My kid and I read this together. It was a gift from a friend. We both felt so validated! My kid got to see a book written exactly to them and I got to read a book that supported so much of how I raise my kid! Thank you so much for this valuable resource!

Review

"I much prefer Wilson's sincerity to the vague and Python-esque witterings of the interfaith and ecumenical groups who barely respect their own traditions. He is willing to maintain very staunchly that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ and that his sacrifice redeems our state of sin."~Christopher Hitchens"More like a lumberjack than a pastor, even when he wears a suit."The New York Times"Doug Wilson jumped the shark a long time ago."~Jonathan Merritt"So just who is this twisted Doug Wilson creature, anyway?"~The Slacktivist"Quintessential Douglas Wilson... very good, very smart, and full of trademark winsome snark. God's people are better off for it. His enemies -- not so much."~Steve Deace, Nationally syndicated radio host "Profoundly insightful and biblically faithful. Wilson has given us a manifesto for grace-driven cultural reformation." --~Joe Rigney, author of The Things of Earth and assistant professor of Theology and Christian Worldview at Bethlehem College and Seminary

I have finished this absolutely fantastic book, I highly recommend it, I like Douglas Wilson, he always speaks brilliant things in a practical way.I love that he summarily rejected and rebuked the idea of being a, "nice", Christian but made it quite clear of the sheer laziness of that approach, especially since much of it is an attempt at social approval or fear of being what he, "cool shaming" but we Christians must remember that anything or anyone that is not with Christ, is against Him.He challenged Christian to develop a robust sense of humor, to not be offendable. The Rules for Reformers are as follows:1) Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever.2) Always remember the distinction between principles and methods.3) Reformers are conservatives, which means they must be prefer the concrete to the abstract.4) Reformers must cultivate a high sense of humor.5) Reformers must be combative.6) Reformers must play the long game.7) Reformers must be remember always that religion shapes culture, and culture trumps politics.I would encourage everyone to look up Douglas Wilson, he offers a different perspective on many of the issues of our day than the dichotomy that mainstream culture would like us to believe that there is.The fact is, the Christian needs to remember that we transform or reform the world by renewing our minds, we do this, by bringing every thought captive and to the obedience of Christ, because Christ is our hope and we must be able to give the reasons why He is our hope, thus be apologetist for Christ, the cross, Him crucified and risen again and that the only way to salvation is through Him and belief in His blood to justify us before God, and God's grace giving us faith to believe in Him, through His Word that is our sword to contend for our faith, the Spirit for our sanctification and for, by, and of the glory of God and it is not work of men but solely the work if God.In a world of radicals, we Christians must be Reformers and transformers of this world, not conforming to the world, but conforming to the image of God and Christ Jesus.

This review is for my brothers. You know who you are. You know we have a fight on our hands, a fight you and I will be engaged in unto the approach of the twenty-second century of our Lord. Now, a fight we know we have, yet, if we're honest, we also have an abundance of directionless generals. That's why I recommend this book. Wilson is not directionless. He's not dull of eye and weak of spine. His nose is not brown from too many bendings over to rump-kiss the powers that be.I believe this book is the most useful contemporary book for those men who want to fight and fight well, for those men who want to spend their lives as reformers.

I rarely finish books these days. I spend most of my time in the Scriptures because the reading of many books there is no end, and it wearies the body. But books by Douglas Wilson are different. He points me to paths I’ve missed. I feel stronger in the Lord and in the Word because of this book. It was not a waste of time. You should read this book. The first 1/3 is easy to read for any Christian, the middle 1/3 is hard and will offend most Christians (including me), but press through it because there is mind changing wisdom here, and the latter 1/3 is encouraging.I give thanks to God for this book.

Excellent. Doug Wilson wrote a quotable and wonderful book here. It should be read by anyone who is interested in Christian cultural engagement. Many great quotes and interesting strategies.

A few minor proof-reading issues, but a genuinely encouraging and entertaining read. Very uplifting for a generation of Christians who need to hear that it's ok (and even biblical) to throw themselves vigorously into the task of changing the world. Wilson as usual is earthy, direct and unashamed to move from theology to action. While I may not agree with him on all the finer details, I feel like Wilson says many of the things I think but have felt pressured by the world around me to shut up and keep quiet about.Theological or economic liberals are encouraged to wear a seatbelt.

It is shameful how the evangelical community has ostracized and alienated Wilson from a "seat at the table." This work is a demonstration of why he has created his own table with a greater prophetic voice than his naysayers.

Wilson cheerfully exposes and dismantles the opposition's strategies, and follows this up with a rebuilt gameplan for Christians, based on the truth of the Gospel rather than the Enemy's false narrative.

I loved this book, found it to be extremely helpful to me, and still refer to it at times. I came here to copy the URL to send to a friend so she could buy it, and am puzzled by the two bad reviews and comments. The extraordinary number of 'helpful' votes they got has served to put those two at the top of the list, and that's too bad. I wonder how many people have not given this book a second thought because of it.As with any book, the writing style either appeals or doesn't. I love his writing for the depth of feeling conveyed, and the clarity often stuns. Lines are in boldface for a reason, and I personally didn't find them annoying or superfluous. There is repetition of ideas: this is a psychologist with (I think) outstanding communication skills, who rephrases important concepts to connect with as many readers as possible. What seems crystal clear to one may seem murky to another unless explained in a way that resonates with him. It also serves to reinforce the concept. Are reviews not to be trusted because they didn't include examples of EI Theory from the book? Mine probably won't either. I'm not a good book or movie reviewer, and don't usually review them for that reason.I will say this: I've been going through some very intense times the last six years, with accompanying depression. I've read a lot of psychology books trying to get through it. And none of them helped me as much as this simple book. I think most of us know while we can't control much of what life throws our way, we can control how we react to it. But HOW? I'm a stoic: be strong, suck it up, stuff it down, don't whine, don't lay it on people. Be p-o-s-i-t-i-v-e. Meanwhile the noise in my head never let up when this last crisis began. The worries, the fears and regrets, the mental self-flagellation. EI Theory is about using logic to control the emotional ways in which we ALL react to just about everything, even if we don't show it outwardly. I think it is one of the simplest concepts I've ever read, and can literally change people's lives in the way they interact with each other. It can change people's lives in the way they view themselves, their past, their present, their future. It can alter the decisions they make going forward, both little and big. It isn't easy to implement, believe me: however many years you've been on this earth is how many years of thought patterns you'll be working against. It awakened me to the fact that I, an intelligent and rational person, very often have irrational reactions to things. And so do you, whether you realize it or not. This book taught me to ask myself WHY I'm having a particular reaction to someone or something, even a memory, how I CHOSE to have that reaction, and how it's possible to change my reaction to it. And he gives concrete steps with which to accomplish this.We continually pin our emotional states to outside influences: he made me mad, she embarrassed me, they make me feel inferior, that made me feel like Sucker of the Year. WHY DOES SHE DO THAT WHEN SHE KNOWS I DON'T LIKE IT?? Like we all don't have one of those in our lives whom we blame for making us crazy sometimes. We accept this lack of responsibility for our emotions because we've always been told it's normal. "We're only human, after all-- most people would feel that way given those circumstances." That doesn't mean it has to be that way. Read this book. I took a chance because it sounded interesting. If you don't want to buy it, get it from the library. If nothing else it will change the way you see things, and make you aware of your reactions. Whether or not you do anything with it is up to you. As the good doctor says, frequently, "It will take a force of will." The hits keep coming but I'm much calmer inside, and peacefulness cannot be overrated. After reading Go Suck a Lemon I was so interested in EI Theory that I read others of his, along with numerous articles on his blog. His book on handling criticism is as good as this one. Because it expands on some basic concepts, I suppose some readers might find it repetitious. When I'm on a quest for insight, I will deal with some repetition in order to glean even one profound statement. Very often it's the exact one I was seeking.

Hilarious to read this book THEN read the one star reviews. I found out while reading this that I have the emotional IQ of a toddler. It gives outstanding advice, insight and strategies to pull yourself out of the pattern of your thoughts working against you. I've heard most of this before, but the author has a way of making it more applicable and usable. This is great information to teach young children and give them skills to deal with challenges they will have in their lives. MUST READ! But if you don't, I'll be ok with it. 😜

The book is a quick read on emotional intelligence. It is mostly focused on sell assessment and self management. It offers a nice perspective on that area. It does not give much information on dealing with others aside from the fact of getting you to feel good or content with other's actions. So if you are looking for tools as a supervisor to help you with your staff, this is not the book for you. The book is written from a clinical standpoint and focuses on self help. It does not deal with productivity or working with other people.

I really liked this book. I was one of those people who go for extremes like "they shouldn't act like that" instead of saying "I would prefer if they didn't act like that, but if they did i would be ok."I read up to page 30 on my first sitting with it, that normally doesn't happen! This book is ready to read with double space and clear pages.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It reviews a relatively simple idea- you are responsible for how you feel. Not necessarily easy to live out especially in this world where many people resist such an implication of personal responsibility but potentially powerful to actually live out. As a clinical social worker, I enjoyed his style of writing because it felt like hearing from a colleague. These are not new concepts to me but I feel newly inspired to practice living them out.

I love this book, it's exactly what I was looking for. It provides a simple and quick guide on how to improve our emotional intelligence by changing our perception and thoughts. At the beginning I was reluctant to read on due to some comments stating that this book had grammar mistakes but I came to the conclusion that this is a strategy used by its author to test our tolerance and see if we can defy our old models of thinking. At least that's what I choose to think though.

I have been struggling with my self defeating thoughts for over 30 years (since I was a teenager). I have PTSD, Borderline and Bipolar II disorders. Most psychologist or therapist want you to dig up the past and work through those issues. This is the first time I have had a book or a person to tell me that I don't need to dig up the past but rather concentrate in the now. When those thoughts (self-defeating) from the past come to mind then I can CHOOSE how I think about them. I can either be rational or irrational in my thinking. If you apply a few basic skills that are outlined in this book it can benefit you. I am not saying it is a cure but if you look at yourself as a work in progress it can help. This formula method that he teaches is a skill and can work but it takes effort.

The author is clearly intelligent and knows his subject, but I felt the book was choppy and hard to follow. It’s not for the everyday person,I felt like it was a PHD college book. The book Didn’t flow and was not entertaining to read and the content was hard to retain.
